Chapter 1: The First Knot: Surrender as Art
The loft smelled like sandalwood and spilled wine, the kind of deep, resinous scent that clung to Cleo’s bohemian life. Fairy lights strung across the high ceiling cast constellations on the exposed brick walls, their soft glow competing with the flicker of a dozen mismatched candles perched precariously on every available surface. Drake sank deeper into the absurdly plush velvet sofa, swirling the dregs of his third glass of Malbec. He felt pleasantly adrift, insulated from the city’s chill by the warmth of the room and the hum of quiet jazz from Cleo’s ancient record player.
"Alright, Picasso," Cleo announced, emerging from the bedroom doorway. She held a coil of deep crimson silk rope like it was a sacred artifact. Her dark curls bounced, catching the warm light, and her smile was pure, unfiltered mischief. "Ready to transcend mere mortality?"
Drake chuckled, the wine making his limbs feel loose and agreeable. "Transcendence was on my to-do list tonight, right after 'drink Cleo's good wine' and 'get talked into something ridiculous'. Check and check."
"Ridiculous?" Cleo feigned offense, placing a dramatic hand over her heart. She dropped the rope onto the low coffee table beside a half-eaten cheese board and a tarnished brass bowl overflowing with incense ash. "This is high art, darling. Performance. Trust the process." She winked. "Besides, you look like a Renaissance sculpture begging to be... well, appreciated."
Mikasa appeared silently beside Cleo, holding another coil, this one a rich indigo. Her expression was calm, focused, a stark contrast to Cleo’s effervescence. She wore simple black linen, her dark hair pulled back in a severe knot that emphasized the sharp angles of her face. She didn’t speak, just nodded once at Drake, her dark eyes assessing. Her presence was always a grounding force, a still point in Cleo’s whirlwind.
Drake met Mikasa’s gaze. There was a quiet intensity there he’d always found intriguing, a depth beneath the serene surface. "Hi, Mikasa. You’re in on this... artistry too?"
A faint, almost imperceptible curve touched Mikasa’s lips. "Cleo requires an anchor. Precision." Her voice was low, cool. "And you require containment." The words weren’t unkind, just factual. "Stand, please."
Drake set his glass down, the wine-induced haze thinning slightly as he pushed himself up. The loft seemed to tilt for a second. "Containment, huh? Sounds ominous." He stretched, rolling his shoulders. "Okay. Lay me on your altar. What’s the master plan, Cleo?"
Cleo picked up the crimson rope, letting it slither through her fingers. "Master plan? Darling, it’s pure improvisation. Inspired by the moment. By you." She stepped closer, the scent of her perfume – something spicy and warm – mixing with the incense. "Think of it as... collaborative sculpture. You’re the marble. We," she gestured with the rope towards Mikasa, "are the inspired chisels."
Mikasa had moved to a sturdy steel hook anchored in the center of the loft’s main beam. She tested it with a sharp tug, the movement economical, assured. "Wrists first," she stated, turning back to Drake. Her fingers, when they brushed his skin to guide him beneath the hook, were indeed cool. Unnervingly precise.
"Comfortable?" Cleo asked, already looping the crimson silk around his right forearm with surprising speed and dexterity. Her movements weren't rough, but they were deliberate, practiced. The silk felt smooth, almost alive against his skin.
"As comfortable as one can be while being prepped for mounting," Drake quipped, watching Cleo’s nimble hands. He offered his other wrist to Mikasa, who took it without hesitation. Her grip was firm, her touch clinical yet somehow intimate in its directness as she positioned his left wrist beside the right, high above his head, beneath the hook. She began tying with the indigo rope, her knots complex and efficient, pulling just tight enough to hold securely without biting.
"Mounting?" Cleo laughed, a bright, sparkling sound. "Such a crude term. We’re elevating you, Drake. Freeing you from the tyranny of choice. Surrender is the ultimate freedom, haven’t you heard?" She pulled a knot snug just below his elbow, cinching the crimson silk. The pressure was firm, undeniable, anchoring his right arm firmly against his back. He could still move his fingers, wiggle his hand slightly, but the arm itself was held fast. It was a strange, vulnerable sensation, being pinned by something so soft.
Mikasa finished securing his left wrist, the indigo rope a cool counterpoint to Cleo’s crimson. She gave the knot a final, testing tug. Drake felt the subtle strain in his shoulder, the stretch across his chest. He was exposed, held aloft. The jazz played on, a saxophone solo weaving through the suddenly charged air.
"Okay," Drake breathed, a slight nervous tremor surfacing despite the wine. "Feeling... contained. Definitely contained." He tested the bindings again. Solid. Unyielding. He looked from Cleo’s playful, intense eyes to Mikasa’s calm, observant ones. "Now what? Do I just... hang here? Admire the ceiling?"
"Now," Cleo purred, stepping back to admire their handiwork, her gaze traveling the lines of rope against his t-shirt, the tension in his suspended arms, the vulnerable arch of his back forced by the posture. She picked up the remaining length of crimson silk, letting it coil like a serpent at her feet. "Now, we appreciate the canvas." Her smile widened, predatory and pleased. "And perhaps... add a few more brushstrokes."
Mikasa moved silently to the coffee table, picking up a small pair of gleaming silver shears Drake hadn't noticed before. She didn't brandish them, just held them loosely at her side, her expression unreadable as she watched Cleo approach Drake again, the red silk whispering against the wooden floor. The playful atmosphere hadn’t vanished, but it had deepened, darkened. The soft light glinted on the shears.
Drake’s breath hitched, his pulse a sudden, insistent drumbeat in his ears. The complete trust he’d felt moments before wavered, replaced by a thrilling, almost electric surge of something else entirely. He was utterly at their mercy, bound, displayed. He looked at Mikasa, holding the shears, her calmness suddenly seeming immense and deliberate. What was the game really? The question hung in the incense-heavy air, sharp as the blades in Mikasa’s hand. Cleo’s fingers brushed his collarbone, tracing the neckline of his shirt. The silk rope in her hand slithered upwards.
