Chapter 3: The Drying Rack
The air in the VIP room had thickened, the smoke curling around the naked bulb like a lazy serpent. Jake’s skin prickled with the weight of every pair of eyes on him, the heat of their stares pressing against his bare chest, his thighs, the damp fabric clinging to his scalp. The wet briefs on his head had begun to stiffen, the cotton fibers tightening into a chilly, unyielding cap. He could feel the way the elastic had stretched, the way it dug into his forehead, the way the cold seat of the underwear clung to his hair like a second skin. It was humiliating. It was also, in some twisted way, *intimate*.
Rex had adjusted the underwear with a care that bordered on reverence, his calloused fingers brushing Jake’s temples like he was handling something fragile. Something *wanted*.
Jake swallowed hard. The taste of rust and cleaner still lingered on his tongue.
Knuckles stepped forward, his massive hands wrapping around Jake’s upper arms again, but this time, there was no aggression in the hold—just a quiet, possessive grip. He leaned in, his hot breath washing over Jake’s ear as he spoke for the first time in hours. The sound of his voice was a shock, deep and guttural, like gravel shifting in a landslide.
*“You’re ours now.”*
The words weren’t a threat.
They were a promise.
Jake’s stomach twisted, but something else unfurled low in his gut, warm and insistent. He wanted to deny it, wanted to snarl some sharp retort, wanted to shove them both back with the old, confident swagger that used to make crowds roar. But the swagger was gone. The roar had been replaced by the hollow echo of a locker room empty of fans.
Rex’s gaze flicked to Knuckles, then back to Jake. The silence stretched, thick enough to choke on. Then Rex exhaled through his nose, a slow hiss like air escaping a punctured tire.
“Alright, princess,” he said, standing up from the chair.
“Let’s get you dry before you catch cold. Walk on over.”
Jake hesitated, his bare feet still glued to the concrete. He felt every pair of eyes tracking the way his muscles shifted as he tried not to fidget with the damp fabric still clinging to his skull. He wanted to cross his arms over his bare chest, but that would mean letting go of whatever fragile dignity he had left, and he wasn’t ready to surrender that completely yet.
Knuckles tightened his grip, just enough to remind him who was moving who. Jake’s breath hitched, but he took a step forward, then another.
His thighs pressed together, the cool air raising goosebumps on his skin. He could feel the damp briefs stiffening, the elastic biting into the back of his neck, the seat of them now stiff against his scalp. It was ridiculous. It was obscene. It was *real*.
The room split open for him like a congregation parting before a priest. Or a sacrifice.
Diesel pushed off from the doorway where he’d been leaning, blocking the exit. His grin was all teeth, his beard dripping with something sticky. “Look at you, Hammer,” he drawled, voice thick with amusement. “All decked out.
Like a good little prize.” Diesel held a plastic bag out to Knuckles, who plucked a clean, black Harlequin t-shirt from it and offered it to Jake. The fabric was thick, warm, smelled faintly of motor oil and dryer sheets. It looked like any other Serpent shirt—until you noticed the small, hand-sewn patch near the left pec: a coiled serpent biting its own tail over crossed wrenches.
Jake hesitated. The shirt wasn’t just clothing. It was a sign he’d just been initiated—or at least symbolically absorbed. And once he put it on, he couldn’t pretend he wasn’t one of them. Not really.
