Chapter 1: Opening Image
Sweaty. Out of gas. Eyes burning with the last of a three-mile treadmill session. That's how I find myself in the gym's locker room every morning, five o'clock sharp.
I peeled off my sweaty gym shorts and threw them into the hamper without looking. The rest of my clothes followed suit. I stood in my underwear, admiring the mirror reflection of a lean, muscular body. Green eyes, short brown hair: all me.
I wiped my forehead with the back of my hand, leaving a trail of salty sweat on my skin. The door to the locker room creaked open, announcing another gym-goer's arrival.
I didn't need to look; I knew who it was. Jake, a fellow regular at the gym. We never exchanged more than pleasantries, but I couldn't deny a growing curiosity about the quiet, mysterious man.
"Morning, Ethan," he said, his voice low and steady.
I turned my head, catching his gaze as he made his way towards an empty locker.
"Morning, Jake," I replied with a nod.
Jake was a regular in his early forties, always sporting a black tank top and sweatpants. He had a thick beard, dark hair, and warm brown eyes that held a hint of playfulness. For the most part, he kept to himself, avoiding the social chaos of the gym.
Facing the mirror, I began drying off with a towel, all while keeping Jake in my periphery.
