Chapter 1: Chapter 1
Kennedy shimmered as she walked through the door, her light steps punctuating her long, straight legs. Clay followed close behind, his long legs extending his reach. His dark hair flopped in front of his eyes, and he scratched his head. It was an involuntary movement, a result of his long legs. Kennedy stopped in front of the mirror, her eyes scanning her reflection.
She was slender, long-limbed, and tan from summer still. Her skin glowed under the fluorescent lights, and her eyes looked like they were gleaming with joy. Her eyeshadow and highlight were perfect, and her lipstick was bright red, a perfect match for her outfit.
She turned from the mirror and stared at Clay. His eyes were the same deep cocoa shade as his hair, but his eyeshadow and highlight were in sharp contrast to Kennedy's own delicate features. Clay's eyes were also bloodshot, a result of the many hours of college basketball he had spent watching highlight reels.
He swallowed and scratched his head again, his nervous tic making his jaw jut.
"What is it you want from me, Kennedy?" he asked, his voice a contrast to Kennedy's own light tan, but deep enough to be considered tan. The two tanned skin tones made a perfect match for Kennedy's blush, the color matching her eyeshadow and highlight. A small oatmeal-colored spot on her shoulder blade was the only blemish on her otherwise perfect skin.
"I need your help with something, Clay," Kennedy said, her eyes craning to take in the last details of her outfit. Her heart thudded heavily in her chest as she watched him and his eyes fix on her and her on him. The expression on his face was one of pure adoration, and Kennedy felt her own heart melt with it. "And don't think I haven't seen you looking at my legs."
His eyes craned back to her and his jaw jutted again. It was a physical reaction to the admiration he felt from her. He swallowed hard and looked away, averting his gaze. Kennedy had been close to him and his eyes had been on her for a long, long time. She had felt his stare, and she knew it was only his way of acknowledging how wonderful she looked.
"Uh-huh," Clay said, his eyes wandering back to her and his thumb moving to his lips in a pout as he thought about what she had asked. "And what exactly is it that you need my help with?"
"How do I look?" Kennedy asked, her back straight and her arms crossed in front of her chest as she waited for his answer.
"Perfect," Clay said, his thumb brushing against his lips as he thought about her again. "You look like you're ready to play some tennis."
"Good," Kennedy said, twirling around in the small space. "Thank you, Clay."
Casting off any remaining doubts, Kennedy strutted from the small room back out into the main court, her heels clicking against the cement floor. She stopped in front of the net, her back straight and her arms crossed at her chest as she waited for Clay to join her.
His gaze followed her as she walked to the other side of the court, her light steps a contrast to his lumbering ones. Kennedy could feel his eyes on her as she stopped in front of the sideline official, her back straight and her left hand on her waist as she awaited her turn.
Her hair fell in front of her eyes, so Kennedy grabbed it with her left hand and pushed it back behind her ears with her right. She took in the white shirt and gray pants she had on, her eyes moving from the stripes on her shirt to the straight lines of her pants and the black and white tennis shoe.
"Perfect," Clay said again, his voice thick with southern accents. "You look like you're ready to play some tennis."
"Good," Kennedy said, smiling widely as she watched him. "Thank you, Clay."
