Chapter 6: Resolution

The exhaustion from the hospital vigil clung to John like a second skin as he unlocked the front door to their home. The familiar creak of the door hinges and the scent of Elizabeth's favorite lavender candles flooded his senses, a stark contrast to the sterile, antiseptic smells of the hospital. He stepped inside, his eyes scanning the cozy living room, with its worn-out leather couch and the framed photos of Elizabeth and him scattered on the mantelpiece. A pang of longing hit him, and he realized how much he had missed this place, how much he had missed her.

He wanted nothing more than to take Elizabeth home, to have her curl up on the couch with a warm blanket and a cup of tea, to watch her laugh and smile and be herself again. But he knew that they still had a long road ahead of them.

He turned to Michael, who was standing in the doorway, his expression a mix of concern and sadness. "I can't leave her," John said, his voice barely above a whisper. "I can't risk anything happening to her again."

Michael nodded, his eyes never leaving John's face. "I understand. You need to be with her, to take care of her.

I get that," Michael said, his voice soft and understanding. "I'll make sure everything here is taken care of. You just focus on Elizabeth."

John nodded, a small smile gracing his lips. "Thank you, Michael. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Michael returned the smile, but it was tinged with a hint of sadness. "I'll always be here for you, John. No matter what."

John clapped Michael on the shoulder, giving it a squeeze before releasing him. "I know. I'll see you soon."

With that, John left, stepping out into the cool night air.

He closed the door behind him, the familiar click of the lock echoing through the stillness. He took a deep breath, letting the familiar scents of home ground him.

Michael stayed behind to get the home ready for Elizabeth, possibly have a meal ready for the couples return.

He had always been the one to handle the practicalities when things were tough. He started with tidying up the house, making sure it was clean and welcoming for Elizabeth's return. He knew how much she loved their home and wanted it to feel just right.

He started with the living room, picking up stray items and straightening the cushions on the couch. He couldn't help but notice the countless photos of Elizabeth and John scattered throughout the room. They were laughing, smiling, and in love in each one. Michael felt a pang of jealously, but quickly pushed it away. He should be happy for them, not resentful.

They deserved their happiness, and he had no right to stand in the way of that.

Michael had always been content with his role in their lives, the steadfast best friend who was there for them no matter what. But lately, he had begun to question that role, to wonder if there was more to life than just being content with the scraps of affection they threw his way.

He picked up a framed photo of the three of them at their favorite beach, the sun setting in the background as they laughed and played in the sand. John and Elizabeth were wrapped up in each other, their smiles wide and genuine, while Michael stood slightly apart, his smile forced and his eyes hollow.

He couldn’t shake the feeling of emptiness that had settled in his chest, a stark contrast to the warmth and happiness radiating from the couple. He quickly placed the photo back on the mantel, his movements brisk and mechanical.

As he moved through the house, he couldn’t help but notice the remnants of their life together—the half-drunk coffee mugs, the discarded shoes by the door, the throw blanket draped over the back of the couch. Each item was a testament to their love, their life together. It was a life that Michael was a part of, but only on the periphery.

He turned his attention to the kitchen and began to start preparing a few quick meals the couples return. He decided to make a simple tomato soup, a classic grilled cheese sandwich and a large bowl of pasta with garlic and olive oil.

He remembers how much Elizabeth loved pasta. He thought that the comfort food might help ease her back into being at home.

As he was cooking, he noticed the time. He decided to check in on Elizabeth and John. He pulled out his phone and called John's phone.

"Hey, Michael." John said, relief in his voice.

"Hey, John. How is Elizabeth doing?" Michael asked, concern in his voice.

"She's doing better. They say she should be getting discharged here pretty soon.” John 's voice was filled with a mixture of relief and hope.

Michael could hear the exhaustion in his friend’s voice. “That’s great to hear, John. I’m really happy for you both.”

John paused for a moment before speaking again. “Michael, I wanted to thank you for everything you’ve done. I know that you’ve been going through a lot, and I appreciate your support more than you could ever know.”

Michael’s heart swelled with warmth at John’s words. “You don’t have to thank me, John. I would do anything for you and Elizabeth.

It's my pleasure to help in any way I can," Michael said, his voice filled with sincerity.

There was a pause on the other end of the line before John spoke again. And I want you to know that I value your friendship, Michael. More than you could ever know. But there's something else I need to talk to you about—something important.”

“What is it John? You can tell me anything” Michael said

“From here on out, you need to be completely honest with me. No more lies. No more games. Even if you think it will hurt, you must be honest and tell the truth no matter what.” John ’s voice was serious, and Michael could hear the weight of his words.

Michael took a deep breath, his grip tightening on the phone. “John, I promise you, from this moment on, I will be completely honest with you. No more lies, no more secrets. I want us to rebuild our friendship, and that can only happen if we’re both truthful with each other.”

John let out a slow breath, the tension in his voice easing slightly. “Alright, Michael. I believe you. I just want us to be able to trust each other again.”

“We will, John. I promise,” Michael said, his voice filled with determination. All that mattered now was rebuilding the trust and friendship with John. “I’ll always be honest with you, no matter what.”

John was silent for a moment, and Michael could almost sense the wheels turning in his mind. Finally, John spoke again, his voice heavy with unspoken thoughts. “I need to know, Michael. Did you ever... did you ever have feelings for Elizabeth?”

Michael’s heart skipped a beat, and he felt a shiver run down his spine. He had known this question was coming, and he knew he had to be completely honest. “Never. Like I said before I have been in love with you and only you for a long time. But i value our friendship and respect your relationship with Elizabeth. I would never do anything to jeopardize that.” Michael said, his voice steady and sincere. “Thank you, Michael. I appreciate your honesty. It means a lot to me.”

Michael could hear the relief in John’s voice, and it made him feel a little better about the situation.

“John, I need to talk to you about something else as well,” Michael said, his voice growing serious.

“What is it?” John asked, concern creeping into his voice.

Michael took a deep breath, steeling himself for the conversation that was about to come. Before he could say a word, john cut him off.

“Hey the doctor is back to talk to me about Elizabeth’s discharge. Can I call you back?” John asked, his voice rushed.

“Sure, of course,” Michael replied, the unease in John's voice not going unnoticed. “Good luck with everything. We'll talk soon.”

John quickly hung up the phone, and Michael could hear the muffled voices of doctors and nurses in the background. He sighed and put the phone back in his pocket, his mind racing with thoughts of what he needed to say to John. He knew it wouldn't be easy, but he had made a promise to be honest, and he intended to keep it.

He decided to use the time to finish preparing the meal for Elizabeth.

He knew that she would need her strength to recuperate fully, and good food was a big part of that. He began to chop some fresh basil and garlic for the pasta, the sharp smell filling the air as he worked. As he cooked, his mind drifted to the conversation he had just had with John. He knew that he needed to tell John the truth about Mika, about how it had been him all along. He had made a promise to be honest, and he intended to keep it. But he also knew that it would be a difficult conversation, one that could potentially jeopardize their friendship.

He took a deep breath, pushing aside his fears and doubts. He had made a promise to John, and he intended to keep it.

As he was finishing up the pasta, the front door opened, and Elizabeth and John walked in, hand in hand. Elizabeth looked exhausted, her shoulders slumped and her eyes barely open. John had his arm around her, supporting her weight as they made their way into the living room.

"Welcome home, Elizabeth," Michael said softly, setting down the wooden spoon he was using to stir the sauce.

Elizabeth managed a small smile, her eyes fluttering shut briefly before opening again.

It's good to be home."

John helped her to the couch, carefully lowering her onto the cushions. He took a seat beside her, his hand still entwined with hers. "How are you feeling, sweetheart?" he asked, his voice soft and concerned.

Elizabeth let out a sigh, her body relaxing into the couch. "Tired. But happy to be here," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Michael approached the couch, a tray in his hands. On it was a steaming bowl of pasta, a glass of water, and a warm blanket.

He set it down on the coffee table in front of Elizabeth and stepped back, giving them space.

"I made you some pasta, Elizabeth," Michael said gently. "I thought it might help."

Elizabeth's eyes widened slightly as she took in the sight of the food, and she let out a soft sigh. That looks amazing."

John took the tray from Michael and placed it on Elizabeth's lap. "Here you go, sweetheart. Eat up," he encouraged, his hand still holding hers.

Elizabeth picked up the spoon and took a small bite, her eyes closing briefly as she savored the taste.

"Mmm, this is so good," she murmured, her eyes fluttering open to meet Michael's. It's just what I needed."

Michael felt a warmth spread through him at her words, and he smiled. "I'm glad you like it. I know how much you love pasta."

John looked up at Michael, his expression softening. For everything."

Michael nodded, his gaze flicking back to Elizabeth. "It's no problem, John.

I'm glad I could help," Michael responded, his smile genuine. He watched Elizabeth take another bite of pasta, her eyes fluttering closed again as she savored the taste, satisfaction filling his heart. As he turned away to gather his things, Elizabeth called out to him.

“Michael, don’t go yet” she said softly, a small smile playing on her lips.

He looked back at her, his gaze softening. “Of course, Elizabeth. I’ll stay as long as you need me to.”

John smiled, his thumb gently stroking Elizabeth’s hand. “John told me everything. And I couldn’t let you go without telling you that i understand” Elizabeth said, her voice soft yet filled with determination. “I know about the feelings you have for him. And I want you to know that I support you both. I love John, so much, but I also love you Michael. You’re my best friend and I can’t imagine my life without you in it. “

Michael’s heart skipped a beat as he listened to Elizabeth’s words. He felt a surge of emotion, a mix of relief, gratitude, and love. He looked at Elizabeth, his eyes welling up with tears. He felt John’s hand on his shoulder, a gentle squeeze of support and understanding.

“We forgive you Michael” Elizabeth said , her voice filled with sincerity. “We both do.”

Michael felt his knees buckle slightly, and he sat down heavily in the chair next to the couch. He looked from Elizabeth to John, his heart swelling with gratitude and love. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He had expected rejection, anger, maybe even hatred. But not this. Not their forgiveness and their support.

“I don’t know what to say,” Michael whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

“You don’t have to say anything. Just please stay for dinner. John was telling me he got my favorite movie on dvd for us to watch but I’d love it if you joined us.” Elizabeth said smiling at Michael. He shook his head as he smiled to himself. “Of course Liz, anything for you” Michael said setting his stuff down and sat next to the couple. As they watched the movie, John and Elizabeth sat close together, their shoulders touching and their hands entwined. Michael watched them, his heart aching with a mix of love and longing. He loved them both so much, and seeing them like this only served to highlight the emptiness he felt in his own life.

He looked away from them, focusing on the movie instead. It was one of Elizabeth's favorites, a romantic comedy with a happy ending. She loved stories like that, stories where everything worked out in the end. Michael couldn't help but wonder if life would ever be that simple for them.
