Chapter 1: Introduction

A warm breeze danced through the streets, the air thick with the tantalizing aroma of exotic spices that weaved their way into your senses. As I continued to follow the scent, my heart beat a little faster, each pulse more insistent than the last. My hands had begun to get clammy, leaving smudges and smears along the handlebars. I glanced at the small, glittering screen of my phone to ensure I wasn't late—Ali would never forgive me if I missed his family function.

My friend had assured me that I would have the time of my life; so far, the fragrant air on my journey there had certainly piqued my interest.

The large, wrought-iron gates loomed before me, etched with intricate designs. I pressed the intercom button, a voice crackling "Hello?" in response. I announced myself and heard a cacophony of locks being disengaged in response. The gates creaked open to reveal a long, winding path that led to an opulent, three-story mansion.

Lush green foliage lined the entrance, forming a canopy of vibrant greens above me as I gently pedaled my bicycle towards the mystery that lay beyond. My curiosity was kindled as I heard laughter and music spilling from the open windows, mingling with the heady scents of the spices that greeted me.

A young girl appeared, her youthful face framed by the delicate lace of her hijab, welcoming me with a hopeful smile.

I smiled back, a little unsure, then noticed her eyes twinkle as her glance darted to the bulging saddlebag hanging from my bike frame.

"Is that for me?" she asked, her voice high and curious.

Taken aback but intrigued, I handed over the small wrapped parcel, slightly befuddled. "I-I suppose so," I stammered, somewhat disarmed.
