Chapter 5: Resolution
As dawn broke, casting its golden hue upon the world below, the lingering echoes of the previous evening's fervor began to subside. The sun climbed higher in the sky, warming the earth beneath its comforting embrace as the couples slowly awakened from their restful slumber.
Eline stirred beside Niels, her eyes fluttering open like fragile wings emerging from an ominous cocoon. Her sapphire irises scanned the room, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings. She found herself nestled against her husband's chest, feeling the steady rise and fall of his breathing.
"What happened last night?" she mumbled, her voice muffled by the crisp fabric of his shirt. For a moment, he remained silent, lost in a fog of memories that seemed too surreal to comprehend. "We played a game," he replied, his voice sounding distant even to himself. "And things... got complicated."
Eline lifted her head, meeting his gaze with an intensity that made him feel exposed. "Complicated?" she echoed, her tone laced with concern.
"What do you mean, 'complicated'?"
Niels exhaled slowly, trying to gather his thoughts. "Remember when Matteo brought those mystical cards? We played a game with them, and... well, some unexpected things happened."
Eline's eyes widened, her breath catching in her throat. "Like what...?" She trailed off, her voice trembling.
Niels reached out and gently cupped her cheek, his fingers brushing against her skin. "I don't know, Eline.
" Niels swallowed hard, his palms growing damp with sweat. "But... I think we should talk about it."
Eline nodded, her grip tightening around his hand. "Yes, let's discuss it. But not now. Let's take some time to process what happened before we decide anything."
They held each other close, exchanging quiet whispers as they tentatively explored the new dimensions of their relationship.
Eline's heart raced in her chest, her pulse thrumming in sync with the secrets bubbling to the surface. Niels, sensing the tension between them, knew that this conversation would shape their future.
"So, tell me," Eline ventured, her voice trembling slightly as she searched his eyes for answers. "What exactly did happen last night?"
Niels sighed, his Adam's apple bobbing as he tried to find the words. "I honestly can't say for certain," he confessed, his green eyes shifting nervously.
"Things got intense... and strange."
Eline squeezed his hand tightly, her voice quivering. "Strange? Like, how strange?"
"Well, I..." Niels paused, struggling to put yesterday's chaotic events into words. "There were these cards," he explained, his voice trailing off. "And every time someone picked one, something crazy would happen."
She stared at him, wide-eyed. "Okay, but...
" Eline prompted, her voice cracking under the weight of mounting anticipation. "Did you..."
Niels grimaced, his cheeks reddening as he sought the courage to divulge the truth. "Yeah," he admitted softly, his voice barely audible. "I kissed Lydia."
The words hung in the air like a suffocating blanket, stifling any chance of escape. Eline's mouth formed a perfect O, her shock etched onto her face like a scarred memory.
"You what?" she sputtered, her words barely forming coherent sentences.
Niels ran his fingers through his short, tangled hair, his guilt weighing heavily on his conscience. "I kissed Lydia," he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "But it wasn't intentional. The card compelled me to do it."
Eline narrowed her eyes, disbelief clouding her usually vibrant demeanor. "How could you let yourself get swept away by some stupid card?" she snapped, her voice laced with hurt and betrayal.
"You didn't stop?"
Niels shook his head, his eyes pleading for understanding. "No, Eline, I swear I didn't know what was happening," he insisted, his voice cracking. "It was like my body was controlled by forces beyond my control."
Eline bit her lip, torn between disbelief and the gut-wrenching pain of betrayal. "So, what else happened? What else did you do?" The words tasted bitter on her tongue, a stark contrast to the sweet promises they once shared.
Eline swallowed hard, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. "And you felt compelled to kiss her?" she asked, her voice cracking like glass under pressure.
Niels closed his eyes, his chest rising and falling rapidly as he grappled with conflicting emotions. "I didn't want to," he confessed, his voice strained from the weight of regret. "But the card made me do it."
Eline snorted derisively, her anger spiraling out of control.
"You're telling me," she spat, her voice shaking with rage, "that something made you kiss that bitch?"
Niels recoiled, wincing at Eline's harshness. "Please, Eline," he pleaded, reaching out to touch her shoulder. "Don't call her that. It wasn't her fault. She was just as much a victim as we were."
Eline's eyes blazed with indignation, her nostrils flaring as she attempted to calm herself.
"Fine," she growled, her voice strained from the effort. "Then explain to me why you're sitting here looking guilty as hell if it was all just fate's doing."
Niels' brow furrowed, his guilt manifesting itself in visible ripples across his troubled visage. "Because I enjoyed it," he admitted, his confession hanging heavy in the charged atmosphere. "In that moment, it felt right."
Eline staggered backwards, her legs buckling beneath her weight.
