Sue nodded, her eyes filled with concern. "I saw it, Jeff. I think we need to talk to him. Find out what's really going on."
Jeff let out a sigh, rubbing his temples. "Yeah, you're right. But I don't know how to approach him. He's terrified of Pete."
Sue looked at Mark, now curled up and fast asleep at the end ofbthe bed "We'll have to be careful. We don't want to make things worse." She paused, considering. "Maybe we should involve Brenda. Let's get more rest ok?
Sue nodded and they laid back down. Sue whispered I love you Jeff
Jeff picked up his phone and texted his mother-in-law, Brenda.
*Jeff*: Hey, Brenda... We have a situation. Can you come over?
Brenda responded almost instantly.
*Brenda*: On my way!
About an hour later, Brenda arrived at their house. She looked concerned as she let herself in and found Jeff and Sue sitting on the couch, both looking exhausted.
"What's going on, you two?" she asked, taking a seat next to them. "It's about Mark," Jeff began, rubbing his temples. "He's... he's not doing well."
"What do you mean?" Brenda asked, her eyebrows furrowing with concern.
Sue took a deep breath and explained what had happened the night before, from Mark's arrival to the humiliating events that followed, and finally, Pete's unexpected appearance and the violent confrontation that ensued.
Brenda listened intently, her expression growing more and more horrified with each passing moment. When Sue finished speaking, she let out a low whistle and shook her head.
