His pack may hold the key to an ancient curse haunting her family, but their first encounter shatters her carefully laid plans. The instant Lysander meets her gaze, a primal bond ignites between hunter and prey. With her mission, her family’s legacy, and her instincts pulling her in opposing directions, Seraphina must choose whether to loose the fatal bolt—or confront the possibility that the monster she came to hunt is her fated mate.

Chapter 1: The Hunter’s Hesitation

The blood moon bled crimson light onto Shadow Creek Woods, painting the ancient trees in hues of danger. Seraphina knelt in the undergrowth, the damp earth cold against her jeans. She ignored the discomfort. Tonight, her focus was absolute. The scent of wolf, potent and musky, hung heavy in the air, stinging her nostrils. Good. He was close.

Her fingers tightened on the crossbow, the familiar weight reassuring. This wasn't her first hunt, not by a long shot. But tonight felt different. More…charged. The air thrummed with a primal energy she couldn't quite place. She adjusted the scope, its crosshairs settling on the center of the clearing. The trap was set, the bait irresistible: a vial of synthetic wolfsbane, potent enough to weaken even an Alpha. Cruel? Maybe. Necessary? Absolutely.

She’d tracked Lysander Thorne for weeks, studying his movements, learning his patterns. He was Alpha of the Shadow Creek pack, a formidable beast with a reputation for ruthlessness. He was also her only lead. Her fingers brushed the worn leather of her journal, a collection of lore and research passed down through generations of her family. The Thorne pack held a secret, a secret connected to the ancient curse plaguing her family. And Seraphina intended to uncover it, no matter the cost.

A twig snapped to her left. Her breath hitched. Too soon. He wasn't supposed to be here yet. She risked a glance, her heart hammering against her ribs. Nothing. Just the wind. Or…something else. Something watching.

Seraphina forced herself to breathe, slowing her pulse. Patience. It was her greatest weapon. The moon climbed higher, bathing the clearing in an eerie red glow. The scent of wolf intensified, closer now, laced with something else, something wilder, more…masculine. A shiver traced its way down her spine. Annoyance flickered within her. She wouldn't let him get to her.

Then, he was there. A shadow detaching itself from the deeper darkness of the woods. Lysander Thorne. He stepped into the clearing, and Seraphina’s breath caught in her throat. Pictures didn't do him justice. He was taller than she imagined, broader, his presence radiating power. His eyes, usually hazel, burned with molten gold in the blood moon’s light. They scanned the clearing, sharp, intelligent, missing nothing.

He paused, sniffing the air, his gaze drawn to the vial of wolfsbane. A low growl rumbled in his chest, a sound that vibrated through the very ground beneath Seraphina's feet. He knew. He knew it was a trap. And then, his eyes locked on hers.

Time seemed to stop. The world narrowed to the space between them. His gaze was intense, predatory, and something else she couldn't name, something that sent a jolt of heat through her veins. It was like being caught in a magnetic field, an irresistible pull that defied logic, defied reason, defied everything she knew to be true. Her finger slipped on the trigger.

The crossbow wavered in her suddenly unsteady hands. She, Seraphina Martel, the hunter, the strategist, was frozen. Lysander Thorne had seen her, truly seen her, and in that moment, an ancient, undeniable connection sparked between them, a connection that threatened to shatter everything. Now, she had to decide if she could betray her mission, or if Lysander would become the prey she couldn’t afford to spare.
