Chapter 5: The First Wave
The scream tore through the silent house, a raw, unfiltered sound that seemed to vibrate in the water around her. It wasn’t a sound of pain, not exactly. It was a sound of sheer, undeniable force. Her body was a bow, arched taut over the blue vinyl edge of the pool, every muscle in her neck and back standing in stark relief. The contraction owned her completely, a seismic clamp that squeezed her from the inside out.
Jake’s hand was between her legs, his fingers working her clit with a ruthless, perfect rhythm, keeping time with the peak of the wave. Her orgasm crested, a white-hot detonation that blurred the lines between pleasure and pure biological imperative. Her internal muscles clenched, a powerful, rhythmic pulsing around the overwhelming pressure of the baby’s head bearing down. The two sensations fused, inseparable, one feeding the other.
Then, as suddenly as it seized her, the contraction released its vise grip. Sasha slumped forward, her forehead resting on the warm vinyl rim, gasping. The water lapped at her chin. Her entire body trembled with spent effort.
Jake slowly withdrew his hand from the water. He didn’t wipe it on his trousers. He brought his fingers to his lips, his eyes locked on her, and tasted the mixed salt of her sweat and arousal. His gaze was fierce, triumphant.
“That,” he breathed, “was transition.”
She could only nod, her breath still ragged. The peaceful, floating respite between contractions was gone. Now, the breaks were mere moments, thirty-second respites filled with a buzzing, animal awareness. The pressure in her pelvis was constant, a huge, insistent presence she could no longer ignore. She felt frantic, trapped in a process that had taken on its own terrifying momentum.
“I can’t—I need to get out,” she panted, pushing back from the edge. “I need to move.”
“Okay.” His voice was calm, an anchor in her sudden storm. “Okay, here.” He stood, water sheeting off his arms, and reached for her. She took his hands, her grip desperate, and let him pull her to her feet. Water cascaded from her body, sluicing over the taut globe of her belly, rivulets tracing the dark line from her navel down. She stepped out of the pool onto the plastic sheet he’d laid down, her legs wobbly.
Another contraction gathered, a monstrous wave building on the horizon of her awareness with terrifying speed. “It’s coming again,” she warned, her voice tight.
“Don’t fight it,” he said, moving behind her. He pressed his hands against her lower back, his palms firm, applying counter-pressure as the surge hit. This one was different. An overwhelming, primal urge accompanied the tightening. Her body bore down without her conscious permission. She grunted, a deep, guttural sound, her knees bending.
“That’s it,” Jake urged, his mouth close to her ear. “Listen to it. That’s the urge. Go with it.”
She pushed, bearing down into the incredible pressure. It felt like her spine was bending the wrong way. She cried out, the effort monumental.
“Good. Perfect. Breath out, now, breathe out. Let it go. Ride the wave down.” His hands never left her back, his voice a steady, low command in the chaos.
The contraction subsided, leaving her shuddering. She straightened, turning to look at him over her shoulder. “It wants to push. My body is just… doing it.”
“It knows what to do. You don’t have to think.” He guided her to the edge of the bed. “Try here. On your side.”
She let him arrange her, curling on her left side atop the dark linens, her top leg bent and drawn up. The position opened her pelvis, and the relief was immediate. He knelt on the floor in front of her, one hand resting on her raised thigh. He reached for the handheld video camera on the nightstand, thumbed it on. A tiny red light glowed.
She didn’t protest. His need to document this was part of the fabric of the room now, as natural as the light from the windows.
The next pushing surge came with a violence that stole her breath. It was an all-consuming need, a demand her entire being had to answer. She grabbed her own thigh, tucked her chin, and bore down with a roar that started in her diaphragm and tore from her throat. Every muscle in her body focused on that single, Herculean task.
“Look at me,” Jake said, his voice sharp.
Her eyes, blurred with effort, found his. He had the camera trained on her face, but he was looking over it, directly into her.
“Again. With this one. Give it everything.”
She didn’t have a choice. Her body was already gathering itself, the pressure building to an unbearable peak. She drew a ragged breath, held it, and pushed. The world narrowed to a tunnel of sensation: the burn between her legs, the explosive pressure in her head, the iron grip of her own hands, and Jake’s unwavering, obsidian gaze. She felt a stretching, a burning, an incredible, crowning fullness.
She released the push with a sob, collapsing back against the pillows, utterly spent.
“Sasha,” Jake’s voice was different. Awed. He set the camera down, still recording, but forgotten. He leaned closer, his eyes fixed between her legs. “With that last one… I can see the head. A full crown. It’s right there.”
Tears, hot and sudden, spilled from the corners of her eyes. Fear and a wild, ferocious hope tangled in her chest. “Is it…?”
“It’s perfect. Dark hair. Wet. A lot of it.” His own hand shook as he reached out, but he didn’t touch. Not yet. “You’re so close. Next one, love. Next one, you meet your baby.”
The break was longer this time. A strange, suspended quiet. She could feel the baby’s head there, a solid, unyielding wedge, stretching her impossibly. The burning ring of fire was a constant, acute sensation. She panted in short, shallow breaths, the “hee-hee-hoo” pattern from the classes coming back to her automatically.
Jake stood and moved quickly to the supply kit. He tore open a sterile packet, pulling out gloves. The sound of the latex snapping against his wrists was profoundly clinical, a sharp note in the charged, organic air. He came back to his place, kneeling on the plastic sheet, his prepared hands held up like a surgeon’s.
“I’m here,” he said, and it was a vow. “I’ll guide it out. You just push.”
The urge returned, more powerful than ever, an imperative that brooked no delay. She nodded, gritting her teeth. She reached down, her fingers finding Jake’s forearm, gripping it like a lifeline. She locked eyes with him once more.
Then she pushed.
This push was different. It wasn’t just effort. It was release. The burning crest became an all-encompassing stretch, and then, with a sudden, wet, yielding sensation, the pressure peaked and… changed. The baby’s head slid out, all at once.
The relief was instantaneous, profound. She gasped, a shuddering intake of breath.
Jake let out a sound, a choked exhalation that was half sob, half laugh. “The head is out. Look at that. Look.” His gloved hands were cradling the tiny, slick head, supporting it. “One more, Sasha. For the shoulders. Big push now.”
She barely heard him. The urgency was back, different now, a need to complete the passage. She bore down with the last reserves of her strength. A slithering, rushing sensation followed, a sudden, total emptiness as the tiny body slid free into Jake’s waiting hands.
A moment of absolute silence.
Then, a sharp, indignant cry pierced the room.
The sound was miraculous, primal, alive. It echoed off the high ceilings, a vibrant announcement. Jake, his face streaked with tears he hadn’t noticed shedding, was lifting the slippery, vernix-coated baby onto Sasha’s chest. A tiny, flailing body, still connected by a pulsing, blueish cord that snaked back into her body. A daughter. She knew it instantly.
Sasha’s hands came up, trembling violently, to gather the wailing infant against her skin. The warmth was shocking. The weight, substantial and real. She bent her head, her lips brushing the wet, dark hair, inhaling the scent of birth—blood, salt, and something profoundly new. The baby’s cries softened into hiccuping grunts as she nuzzled against the familiar rhythm of Sasha’s heart.
Jake’s gloved hand rested gently on the baby’s back, steadying her. He was staring at the scene, his face a naked canvas of emotion: reverence, hunger, satisfaction, a dawning, terrifying love. He had captured the moment of becoming. Not with his camera, but with his entire being.
Sasha looked from her daughter’s squalling, perfect face up to Jake. Exhaustion blurred the edges of everything, but his image was sharp, burned into her. He was part of this now. Woven into the very first moments.
“Jake,” she whispered, her voice cracked and raw.
He leaned in, his forehead pressing against her temple, his tears mingling with her sweat. He didn’t speak. He just watched the baby, his breath warm on her skin. The camera on the nightstand continued to record, a silent witness to the three of them, bound by blood and water and something far less definable. The journey was over. A new, more complicated one had just begun.
