Chapter 1: Introduction
The chandelier's crystal teardrops twinkled and danced, casting their warm glow over shimmering dignitaries who swirled and curtseyed in their opulent gowns. Luna, however, took no pleasure in this royal pomp. With her face veiled by a mask of lavender feathers, she yearned for fresh winter air so she could breathe freely.
She had just consumed a third bite of the tasteless layered cake when Micah appeared at her side.
His ginger hair, a stark contrast to his black uniform, was neatly combed, but his sapphire eyes held a hint of rebellion. Luna's heart fluttered at the sight of him.
Micah, her constant shadow, her confidant, her secret. She knew he felt it too, the electric charge that always seemed to crackle between them.
Micah asked, extending his hand towards Luna. She placed her small, gloved hand in his, feeling the rough callouses that spoke of countless hours spent training and protecting her. He led her away from the prying eyes of the court, towards the grand terrace doors that opened to the castle gardens.
They stepped out into the cool night air, the sound of the orchestra fading as the doors closed behind them. The gardens were bathed in silver moonlight, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to beckon them deeper into the labyrinth of stone walkways and lush foliage.
Luna's heart pounded in her chest, not from fear, but from anticipation. She had snuck out of her room countless times before, but never with Micah. Never for this.
Micah led her along the familiar paths, his hand still holding hers. His thumb traced circles on her gloved palm, sending shivers up her arm. She glanced at him, his profile sharp in the moonlight. He was her protector, her friend, but tonight, he was something more. Tonight she could see the desire in his eyes, the tension in his jaw. He wanted her as much as she wanted him.
The realization sent a surge of heat through her veins, making her pulse quicken. She bit her lower lip, her eyes never leaving his face, trying to read his thoughts, his intentions.
Micah stopped suddenly, turning to face her. His eyes, usually so guarded, were open, intense. "Luna," he whispered, her name a warm breath on her lips. "Your father would have my head if he knew we were out here like this."
Luna stepped closer, closing the gap between them. She could feel the heat radiating off him, smell the faint scent of soap and steel.
"Then let's make sure he doesn't find out," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. Her heart hammered in her chest, but she didn't look away. She couldn't. Not when he was looking at her like that.
Micah's gaze flicked down to her lips, then back up to her eyes. "You're playing with fire, Luna," he warned, his voice low and gruff.
A smile tugged at the corners of her mouth. "I like fire," she said, her voice steady despite the butterflies rioting in her stomach.
She reached up, slowly, and removed her mask, letting it fall to the ground. She wanted him to see her, all of her. No more secrets, no more pretenses.
Micah's eyes widened slightly, but he didn't move. He stood there, tall and rigid, his hands clenched at his sides. "Luna," he started, his voice hoarse, "we can't... we shouldn't..."
She placed a finger on his lips, silencing him. "We can," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "We should. I want to, Micah.
I want to more than anything." Luna's voice was barely a whisper, but it echoed loud and clear in the quiet of the garden. She felt a blush creep up her cheeks, but she didn't look away. Not when he was looking at her like that - with a mixture of desire and hesitation that made her heart race.
Micah's gaze dropped to her lips, lingering there for a moment before meeting her eyes again. "Luna, you know I've always... I've always cared for you. But this... this is dangerous. For both of us."
Luna understood his concern. She did.
She knew the risks, the potential consequences. But she also knew what she wanted. And she wanted Micah. She wanted him like she wanted her next breath, like she wanted the sun to rise in the morning. She wanted him more than she had ever wanted anything in her life.
She took a step closer, her body pressing against his. She could feel the hard planes of his muscles, the heat of his skin through his uniform. She looked up at him, her breath hitching in her throat as she saw the raw desire in his eyes.
"Please, Micah," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"For once, live dangerously with me."
Micah's gaze searched hers, as if he was looking for any sign of doubt or uncertainty. Finding none, he let out a soft exhale, his resistance crumbling. He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a soft, tentative kiss. It was a question, a request for permission. Luna answered by pressing herself closer, her hands reaching up to tangle in his hair, deepening the kiss.
His arms wrapped around her, pulling her tight against him. The kiss became more urgent, more passionate. His lips moved against hers with a hunger that mirrored her own.
Luna's heart pounded in her chest, her breath coming in short gasps as she reveled in the sensation of his body pressed against hers. She could feel the hard length of him, could feel the heat of his desire. It emboldened her, made her brave.
She traced the line of his jaw with her fingers, feeling the stubble that had grown since this morning. He groaned against her mouth, his hands tightening on her waist. She smiled, a small, triumphant smile, as she realized she had this effect on him.
She had always known he cared for her, but this... this was something else entirely. This was raw, primal, and it lit a fire within her that she hadn't known existed.
Micah pulled back slightly, his breath ragged. "Luna," he murmured, his voice heavy with desire, "we should stop. Before we go too far."
Luna looked up at him, her eyes shining with unshed tears. "I don't want to stop, Micah," she whispered. "I want this. I want you."
Micah's eyes searched hers, looking for any sign of doubt or uncertainty.
But all he found was determination and desire. He let out a soft exhale, his resolve crumbling. He leaned down, capturing her lips in a passionate kiss that left no room for hesitation. Luna responded eagerly, her body pressing against his, her hands tangling in his hair.
He walked her backwards, his lips never leaving hers, until her back hit the rough bark of an ancient oak tree. She gasped at the sudden contact, but the sound was swallowed by his kiss. He pressed against her, his hands roaming her body, exploring the curves hidden beneath the layers of her gown.
She gasped, her body arching into his touch, her heart pounding in her chest. She had never felt like this before, never felt this alive, this...desirous.
Micah's hands found the ties of her gown, his fingers deftly unraveling the bow. The dress slipped off her shoulders, the cool night air caressing her skin, making her shiver. She felt a moment of hesitation, of vulnerability, but it vanished when she saw the look in Micah's eyes.
He looked at her like she was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen, like he couldn't believe she was real.
His gaze traced the curves of her body, now visible through the thin silk of her undergarments. "Luna," he breathed, his voice filled with reverence. "You're... breathtaking."
Luna blushed at his words, her heart swelling with affection. She reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as she hooked them in the neckline of his uniform. "Let's go to my quarters," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
"It's not far from here."
Micah nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. He grabbed her hand, pulling her along the familiar paths of the garden, the shadows dancing around them as they moved quickly and quietly. They passed the rose bushes, their scent heavy in the air, and the fountain where they used to play as children, its water now still and silent.
Luna's heart pounded in her chest, not from exertion, but from anticipation. She could feel Micah's hand, warm and strong, holding hers. She glanced at him, his face set in a determined expression, his jaw clenched.
"It's warmer there, and... safer."
Micah nodded, his eyes reflecting the urgency she felt. He scooped her up in his arms, her gown rustling softly around them. She wrapped her arms around his neck, her heart pounding in her chest as he carried her through the moonlit gardens, towards the guard's quarters nestled behind the castle.
The walk was short, but it felt like an eternity to Luna. Every step brought them closer to the point of no return, and yet, she didn't want to turn back. She wanted this, wanted him, more than she had ever wanted anything.
"It's too cold out here."
Micah nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. He helped her adjust her gown, covering her shoulders as they made their way back through the labyrinthine gardens. The castle loomed ahead, its towers casting long, dark shadows that seemed to beckon them inside.
They snuck into the castle, their footsteps muffled by the thick carpets. The corridors were quiet, the rest of the castle's inhabitants still engrossed in the festivities. They reached Luna's chambers without incident, her lady-in-waiting long since retired for the night.
