Samantha and Clarissa are staying at a lodge with their friend Jeff on a hiking trip. Clara joins them for a cozy afternoon, when things get steamy over a game of truth or dare.

Chapter 4: Chapter 4

The fire crackled, devouring the silence that followed Samantha’s declaration. Her green eyes, glinting with a defiant spark, locked onto Clarissa’s. “I’ll do it. I’ll let him shave me.” She gestured vaguely toward her own lap, the thick wool of her socks stark against the wooden floor. “But only if it’s a group project. If I’m getting a landing strip sculpted by Jeff, then you’re all getting one too. All of us. Right here.”

Her words landed with a tangible weight, pressing the air from the room. It was no longer a dare; it was a pact.

Clarissa’s lips parted, but no sound emerged. The intellectual part of her mind, the one that loved old books and quiet contemplation, screamed a retreat. But another part, the one she kept locked behind her high-necked blouses and corduroy, stretched awake, curious and warm. The memory of Clara’s wide-eyed inspection in the bathroom flitted through her mind—a strange, intimate currency that had already been spent.

Jeff simply stared, his glass frozen halfway to his lips. The muscles in his forearm corded under his skin. He looked from Samantha’s challenging smirk to Clarissa’s flushed, conflicted face, and then to Clara, who had drawn her knees up to her chest on the armchair, making herself small.

“That’s not how the game works, Sam,” Jeff finally managed, his voice rough.

“Says who?” she shot back, crossing her arms, which pulled the burgundy sweater tighter across her chest. “You made the rules? It’s truth or dare, not truth or dictator. My counter-dare is that we all participate. A collective... grooming. Equality in vulnerability, or whatever. Otherwise, pass. And we all know you don’t pass after whiskey.”

Clarissa found her voice, though it was softer than usual. “You’re serious.”

“Deadly.” Samantha’s grin was fierce. “You wanted to see me squirm, Claire? Fine. But we’re all squirming together. You, me, and Clara. Jeff gets to play barber for all three of us. That’s the deal.”

Clara made a small, shocked noise into her knees. “Me?” she squeaked. “But I... I didn’t...”

“You’re here, aren’t you?” Samantha turned her unyielding gaze on the younger woman. “You sat through the truth. You did the inspection. You’re in the circle. The circle gets shaved.”

Clara’s dark eyes, immense in her pale face, darted to Jeff. A confusing cocktail of terror and a sharp, unwelcome thrill shot through her. The thought was absurd, obscene. The idea of Jeff, his big hands, so close… there. The wool of her pantihose felt suddenly abrasive.

Jeff ran a hand through his shaggy hair. “This is insane.”

“It’s chemistry,” Clarissa murmured, almost to herself. All eyes turned to her. She was looking into the fire, her profile sharp in the orange light. “Unstable elements. Confined space. Added catalyst—the alcohol, the dares.” She finally looked at Samantha, a slow, thoughtful acknowledgment passing between them. “It was always going to react. We just didn’t know what the compound would be.” She took a deliberate sip of whiskey, her throat working as she swallowed. “I’m in.”

Samantha’s triumphant smile was swift. “Clara?”

Tears of panic shimmered in Clara’s eyes, but she also felt a powerful, gravitational pull toward the center of the room, toward the heat of this shared secret. If she said no, she would be cast out, the prudent stranger who broke the spell. She gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

“Jeff?” Samantha’s voice was a low purr.

He exhaled, a long, shuddering breath that spoke of surrendering to a current too strong to fight. “You’re all fucking crazy.” He stood up, setting his glass down with a definitive clink. “I need the stuff. Razor. Shaving cream. Towels.”

“Bathroom cabinet,” Clarissa said, her voice eerily calm. “There’s a new pack of disposables under the sink. Cruelty-free shave gel on the shelf. Small basin.”

The normalcy of the instructions was surreal. Jeff vanished down the hall, and the three women were left in the throbbing quiet of the fireplace. The rain seemed to intensify, a steady drumming on the roof.

Samantha began to move first, shrugging off her oversized burgundy sweater. The firelight washed over her toned arms and the simple black sports bra beneath. She didn’t stop there, hooking her thumbs into the waistband of her hiking leggings and cotton underwear and pushing them down in one fluid motion. She stepped out of the pooled fabric, kicking it aside with a sock-clad foot. The warm glow painted her nude form in amber and shadow, highlighting the flat plane of her stomach, the curve of her hips, and the auburn triangle of hair at the junction of her thighs. She stood, arms loosely at her sides, owning the space. “Well? We said all of us.”

Clarissa watched, her breath shallow. Then, with methodical slowness, she unbuttoned her gray cardigan, folded it, and placed it on the couch. The high-necked blouse came next, each button a tiny ceremony. She was wearing a sensible, lace-trimmed bra the color of cream. Then her fingers went to the button of her corduroy pants. The heavy fabric whispered as it slid down her legs, revealing plain ivory panties. She removed them, stepping out of the puddled clothing with a grace that belied the situation. Her dark hair fell over her shoulders, shielding her face for a moment. Her body was paler than Samantha’s, softer, with a gentle fullness. Her own dark hair was a neat, trimmed patch.

Both women turned to Clara, who looked like a rabbit caught in a lantern’s beam. Trembling, she stood. Her fingers fumbled with the buttons of her flannel dress. It fell open, and she slipped it from her shoulders, letting it pool at her feet on the rug. She wore a modest, full-coverage bra and the wool pantihose. With a shy, agonized movement, she peeled the pantihose down, revealing simple white cotton briefs beneath. Finally, she removed her bra, then her underwear, crossing her arms over her small breasts. Her body was slight, almost delicate, and she was completely bare, her skin glowing like porcelain in the firelight.

Jeff returned, his arms laden with supplies. He stopped cold in the archway, the plastic basin dropping from his hands with a dull thud. The sight stole the air from his lungs. Three women, in various states of undress, illuminated like Renaissance figures in the hearth’s hellish glow. Samantha, defiant and athletic; Clarissa, composed and softly sensual; Clara, fragile and exposed. The raw, naked reality of it was a physical blow.

“Well, Mr. Barber,” Samantha said, her voice slicing through his stupor. She walked to the thick fur rug directly before the fire and lay down, settling on her back with her knees bent and parted. The firelight danced openly on her most intimate skin. “Ladies first. Don’t be gentle.”

Jeff’s hands were unsteady as he gathered the basin, the can of gel, the neon-green disposable razor. He knelt on the rug between Samantha’s splayed legs, the heat from the fire searing his side. He couldn’t look at her face. His entire focus tunneled to the thatch of auburn curls before him. He sprayed a dollop of the cool, viscous gel into his palm.

“You better not fucking cut me,” she whispered, but there was a throaty challenge in it.

His fingers, slick with gel, touched her. She flinched, a tiny intake of breath. He began to spread the substance, his touch clinical at first, then slowing. The texture of her curls, the soft, surprising heat of her skin beneath. Her scent, musky and clean, mixed with the aloe of the gel. His own arousal was a painful, insistent pressure in his jeans.

He brought the razor up. The first swipe was awkward, tentative. A patch of dark, wet hair came away on the blade, revealing pale skin beneath. Samantha’s hips gave a minute jerk.

“Fuck,” she breathed, her head tilting back.

Encouraged, Jeff found a rhythm. He used his other hand to pull her skin taut, his fingers pressing into the soft flesh of her inner thigh. He shaved in slow, deliberate strokes, clearing a wider path. The act was intensely intimate, a bizarre combination of service and violation. The sound of the razor scraping was loud in the quiet room. Layer by layer, her bush receded, replaced by a smooth, vulnerable landscape. He shaped it as she’d demanded, leaving a neat, vertical strip of dark auburn hair above her swollen folds, which glistened with more than just shaving gel.

When he was done, he used a damp washcloth to wipe away the remnants. She was sleek, exposed, the skin pink and new. He sat back on his heels, breathing heavily.

Samantha lifted her head, looked down at herself, and let out a low, impressed whistle. “Not bad, Jeffy. Your turn, Clarissa.”

Without a word, Clarissa moved to the rug. She lay down exactly where Samantha had been, her movements precise, as if following a scientific protocol. But her chest was rising and falling too quickly. Jeff moved to kneel between her legs. Her triangle of hair was darker, neater than Samantha’s had been.

He repeated the process. His fingers shook less this time. As he smoothed gel over her, his knuckle accidentally brushed her slit. A shocked, wet warmth met his touch. Clarissa gasped, a sharp, unguarded sound, and her knees fell wider apart. Jeff’s eyes flew to her face. Hers were screwed shut, her long dark hair fanned out on the rug, her teeth digging into her lower lip.

He shaved her with newfound concentration, captivated by the silent tremors that ran through her body with each pass of the razor. When he finished and cleaned her, the result was the same: a stark, clean strip of skin framing her sex, which now looked flushed and impossibly inviting. He saw a bead of moisture gather at her opening.

He was painfully hard. The room smelled of sex and aloe and pine smoke.
