Chapter 3: Morning Light and Confessions

The first thing Luke became aware of was a warm, solid weight on his chest and the scent of vanilla and sleep. Late-morning sun, thick and honeyed, cut through the gaps in the curtains, painting stripes of gold across the floor and over the blanket tangled around their legs. He blinked, his mind slowly dredging up the night—the fight, the walk, the couch, the slow, seismic joining that had left him feeling hollowed out and rebuilt.

Naomi stirred against him. Her eyes fluttered open, meeting his immediately. There was no disorientation, no startled retreat. Just a slow, sleepy focusing. A small, private smile touched her lips.

They started kissing as soon as they woke up. It was a soft, sun-warmed press of lips, a continuation of a conversation their bodies had been having all night. Her hand came up, her fingers tracing the stubble along his jaw.

She pulled back just enough to speak, her voice morning-rough and utterly direct. “I’m not usually one to do that,” she whispered. “Fall into bed—or onto a couch—with someone I just met. I don’t want you thinking it was the tequila talking. Or the adrenaline.” Her dark eyes held his, unwavering. “You’re sweet. And I like you.”

The words landed in his chest, warm and heavier than any shot put. He swallowed, his thumb brushing her cheekbone. “I’ll do right by you, Naomi.” The promise came out hoarse, too big for the sunlit room. “I’ve… I’ve already practiced it in my head. Since I saw you freshman year of high school. At states. In the yellow warm-ups.”

She stared at him. Then a laugh burst from her, bright and surprised. “You are such a dork.” She kissed him again, deeper this time, her body shifting against his in a way that made him inhale sharply.

The bedroom door creaked open.

Austin shuffled out, squinting against the light. He was wearing last night’s pants and no shirt, his hair a spectacular disaster. He took two steps toward the kitchen, stopped, and slowly turned his head toward the couch.

They lay there, intertwined, facing him. Luke’s arm was around Naomi’s bare shoulders. They didn’t move apart.

Austin’s bleary eyes cleared. A wicked grin spread across his face. He shuffled over, looming above them with his hands on his hips. “Well, good morning, you disgusting, beautiful people. Just so you know, your clandestine efforts to hide your three collective orgasms last night were hidden to no one. We heard everything.”

Naomi didn’t miss a beat. She didn’t blush or hide her face. She looked up at Austin, her expression deadpan. “Four.”

Austin’s grin froze. “I’m sorry?”

“You said three.” Naomi’s voice was calm, matter-of-fact. “It was four.”

Austin’s jaw went slack. He pointed a finger at her, then at Luke, then back at her. He was speechless.

The bedroom door opened wider. Lisa emerged, followed by a yawning Andrea and a wary-looking Chanelle. They all stopped, taking in the scene: Austin standing in stunned silence over the couch, where Luke and Naomi lay in a nest of blankets, utterly unashamed.

“Coffee,” Lisa announced, her voice gravelly. “Now. Before any more math is done.”

Austin, finally rebooted, threw his hands up and retreated to the kitchenette. The clatter of mugs and the gurgle of the ancient coffee maker filled the heavy silence. Lisa and Andrea slid onto the far end of the sectional, trying and failing not to stare. Chanelle leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed.

Luke moved then. With a gentle squeeze to Naomi’s shoulder, he sat up. The blanket pooled around his waist. He spotted his jeans in a heap by the sofa leg. “I’ll get yours,” he said quietly to Naomi, his back to the room as he stood.

The sight of him, all that powerful, scarred topography naked in the morning light, briefly halted even the coffee-making. He pulled his boxers and jeans on with a few efficient motions, the denim straining over his thighs. Then he bent, gathered Naomi’s jeans and her delicate black underwear from where they were tangled together on the floor. He brought them to her, handing them over under the cover of the blanket with a quiet courtesy that felt more intimate than the nudity.

Naomi accepted them with a nod. She wriggled under the blanket, a subtle shifting, and emerged a moment later having pulled her jeans on under its sanctuary. She kept the blanket wrapped around her shoulders like a cape, covering the fact that she only wore her t-shirt and underwear above the waist.

Austin delivered mugs of coffee with the solemnity of a priest offering communion. He handed one to Naomi, who took it with both hands, and one to Luke, who murmured thanks. The group sat in a loose circle, the steaming mugs providing a focal point. The elephant in the room wasn’t just present; it was doing cartwheels.

Naomi took a sip, sighed, and then looked around at the faces of the women who knew Luke in ways she was just beginning to understand. Her cheeks warmed with a blush, but her voice was steady.

“So. Yeah. We had sex on the couch last night.” She stated it like a weather report. “I’m assuming the acoustics in this building are shit, so you heard. I just want to state, for the record, that it was… consequential.”

Luke, holding his mug, raised his free hand like a student in class. “I was the victim.”

Naomi nodded, a serious judicial expression on her face. “He kinda was.” She took another sip, gathering her thoughts. “I wanted to get comfortable, so I took my pants off. Then I wanted to be nice, so I took his off, too.” A flicker of a smile. “Then when I laid back on top of him… my body reacted. And honestly?” She looked at each of them—Lisa, who was smiling into her mug, Andrea, who nodded with understanding, Chanelle, whose crossed arms had loosened slightly. “It probably would have happened if you were all still out here. Sorry. Not sorry.”

The silence that followed was broken by Austin snorting coffee out of his nose. He choked, wheezing, pounding his chest. Lisa let out a loud, relieved laugh. Andrea giggled, shaking her head. Even Chanelle’s stern expression cracked into something approximating rueful amusement.

Luke just looked at Naomi, his blue eyes bright with something like awe. He didn’t say a word. He didn’t have to. The promise he’d whispered, the practice of a lifetime, hung in the air between them, more real now than it had ever been in his head. The morning sun climbed higher, soaking the dusty, popcorn-littered room in light, and for the first time, it felt like a beginning instead of just a place to crash.
