Chapter 1: Beginning
The moving van had just pulled up to the curb, and I was already sweating through my shirt. I didn't mind the physical labor—it was the hassle of unpacking that I dreaded. Boxes upon boxes of crap I didn't need but couldn't let go of. My biggest concern, though, was my new roommate. I had heard through the grapevine that he was a strange cat, didn't socialize much, and spent most of his time glued to his computer screen. Great, just what I needed—a hermit for a roommate.
I shook my head, trying to clear the negativity. Maybe he'd be cool.
Or maybe not. Either way, I'd deal with it. I was Dave, the hulkish football player who took care of business on and off the field. A stern but fair guy, that's what they said. I liked to think I was more than that—funny, caring—but that was for people who actually got to know me.
I watched as the moving crew carried boxes into our dorm room, each one encased in a thin layer of dust. The place was a dump, really.
A labyrinth of concrete corridors that always smelled like a mix of pizza and disinfectant. Our room was no exception, but it was home for the next year, at least. I watched as the movers haphazardly tossed boxes into the room, the contents likely to be just as jumbled as their unpacking job.
"Hey, watch it with that!" I called out to one of the guys as he nearly dropped a box labeled 'Fragile' with a fat black marker. He glanced back at me, unimpressed, and grunted before moving on. I rolled my eyes and turned to lean against the doorframe, trying to ignore the chaos.
That's when I saw him—the hermit roommate, I presumed. He was standing in the corner, looking completely out of place. Tall and thin, with long blonde hair that was almost as long as the baggy t-shirt he was wearing. He was holding a laptop, staring at it intently, and didn't seem to notice the commotion around him.
"You must be Ethan," I said, pushing off the doorframe and walking towards him. He looked up, startled, and quickly closed his laptop.
"Yeah, that's me," he said, tucking the laptop under his arm like a shield.

His eyes darted around the room, taking in the mess, before settling back on me. "You're Dave, right? The football guy?"
I chuckled, "Guilty as charged. And you're the computer whizz-kid, I hear."
He blushed a little, looking down at his sneakers. "Something like that," he mumbled.
I looked around the room, shaking my head. "Well, Ethan, looks like we're in for a fun time unpacking this mess."
Ethan followed my gaze, his brow furrowing in concern.
"Yeah, I didn't exactly have a say in how they packed my stuff," he said, running a hand through his long blonde hair. "I guess they figured since I'm a 'computer whizz-kid,' I could just reorganize everything digitally."
I laughed, clapping him on the shoulder. It was a gentle tap, considering the size difference between us, but Ethan still flinched slightly. "Well, lucky for you, I've got some muscle to help with the heavy lifting. Let's tackle this together, yeah?"
He nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Thanks, Dave.
I appreciate it," Ethan said, his voice soft but sincere. He hesitated for a moment, then added, "I'm not usually great with... well, with people. But I think we can make this work."
I grinned at him, "Hey, we're both here to learn and grow, right? Besides, I'm not so bad myself. Just don't ask me to explain quantum physics or whatever it is you tech-savvy folks dabble in."
Ethan chuckled, a light sound that seemed to brighten the room a bit. "Deal.
I'll stick to the geek stuff, you stick to the jock stuff," Ethan said, a playful glint in his eye. I laughed, liking the sound of that. It was a fair exchange, after all.
As we started unpacking, I couldn't help but notice the stark contrast between our belongings. My boxes were filled with football gear, textbooks, and a ridiculous amount of protein powder. Ethan's, on the other hand, were stuffed with computer parts, gaming merchandise, and more comic books than I thought one person could read.
As I lifted a box marked 'Danger: Contains Nerdy Stuff', I raised an eyebrow at him.
"Seriously, Ethan? 'Danger: Contains Nerdy Stuff'? You do know we're sharing a room, right?" I teased, setting the box down on his bed with a thud.
He shrugged, a slight blush coloring his cheeks. "Hey, I never said I was good with labels. Besides, it's mostly just collectibles and stuff. You'll see."
I chuckled, reaching into the box and pulling out a figure of some superhero I vaguely recognized.
