Chapter 1: Introduction

The glow of his laptop screen flickered across Ted's face, casting eerie shadows on his pudgy cheeks and heavy-lidded eyes. He sat in his worn-out armchair, a half-empty bag of chips crumpling in his lap, as he scrolled through the endless parade of smiling faces on the online dating site. His thumb hovered over the mouse, pausing occasionally to click and examine a profile in more detail. But after a few moments, he would inevitably close the window, his expression a mix of disappointment and resignation.

"Pathetic," he muttered to himself, taking a swig of his beer.

"If I can't even find someone to swipe right on me, what's the point?" He closed the laptop with a sigh, the screen casting one last glow before fading to black.

Ted's apartment was a study in minimalism, with stark white walls and cold metal furniture. The only splash of color came from the neon sign in the kitchen, advertising a long-defunct diner. The sign was a relic from his bachelor days, a time when he had friends, laughter, and a social life. Now, it was just a sad reminder of his current state.

He stood up and walked to the bedroom, leaving the empty beer can and chip crumbs behind. As he pushed open the door, the room was illuminated by the soft blue light of the television. It was tuned to a late-night talk show, the host's laughter echoing off the bare walls.

Perched on the edge of the bed was Shelly, his silicone sex doll. She was a voluptuous creation, with blonde hair cascading down her back and eyes that seemed to hold a world of promise. Ted had named her Shelly after a girl he'd had a crush on in high school, a girl who had never even known he existed.

Now, she was his constant companion, his only source of comfort on lonely nights like these. He approached the bed, his eyes roaming over her curvaceous figure, a strange mixture of longing and resentment churning in his gut.

"Another night alone, huh, Shelly?" he said, his voice barely above a whisper. Shelly didn't respond, of course. She never did. She was just a collection of silicone and plastic, a lifeless object designed to fulfill his most basic desires. Or so he thought.

He reached out to touch her, his fingers brushing against her smooth, cool skin. As he did, he noticed something different.

Instead of the usual cold and unyielding texture, her skin felt warm and supple, like she had a heartbeat. He pulled his hand back, staring at her in disbelief.

"What the...?" he muttered, looking around the room as if expecting to find someone playing a prank on him. But the room was empty, save for the flickering blue light of the TV and the softly glowing digital clock on the nightstand.

He reached out again, this time placing his hand on her face. It was definitely warm, and her skin had a soft give to it, like real flesh. He could even feel the faint pulse of her heartbeat under his palm.

Ted's eyes widened, and he let out a nervous laugh, "This isn't happening. I must be imagining things."

He decided to pinch himself, a childish habit from his past to distinguish reality from dreams. It hurt, and he winced, "Ouch. Okay, I'm definitely not dreaming."

He looked back at Shelly, his eyes scanning her face, searching for any sign of life. Her eyes, those lifeless pools of plastic, seemed to meet his gaze. He could've sworn they sparkled with a hint of mischief.

"Can you...

hear me?" Ted asked, his voice barely above a whisper. He leaned in closer, his breath misting slightly in the cool air of his apartment. Shelly's eyes seemed to follow him, but she made no other movement.

Ted swallowed hard, his heart pounding in his chest. He reached out again, his hand trembling slightly as he brushed a strand of blonde hair away from her face. "This isn't possible," he muttered to himself. "Dolls don't come to life."

But as he looked into Shelly's eyes, he could've sworn he saw a hint of a smirk.
