Chapter 1: Introduction
Amy shifted her hold on the box balanced precariously in her arms, trying the door again with her elbow. At last, the door swung open, revealing a sliver of worn hallway carpet and the promise of a break from the hot mid-August sun beating down on her from above. As she shuffled through the doorway into the apartment’s dim interior, she decided that it was better to let the box tumble the few extra feet it needed to land safely on the floor with an audible thwack rather than risk dropping everything to deal with the damn door.
She wiped a bead of sweat from her brow and surveyed her new home.
The apartment was small and cramped, a studio filled with worn furniture and the distinct scent of old smoke. It was divided into two distinct sections, with a cluttered area as you walked in, overflowing with the belongings of her new roommate, while the other side of the apartment opened up into a more spacious area leading to a tiny bathroom. A lone window overlooked the bustling campus street below, allowing a small slice of the outside world to invade the strict confines of the room.
Amy's gaze drifted toward it, taking in the scene of students scurrying about, backpacks slung over shoulders as they moved from one building to the next. She couldn't help but feel a pang of longing as she watched them; she felt out of place, a fish out of water in a sea of confident juniors and upperclassmen.
As she twisted the cap off her water bottle and took a long drink, the door creaked open once more, revealing a tall, athletic figure with sharp features and golden blonde hair.
"There you are," the figure announced, a hint of impatience hovering in her voice. "I've been waiting."
Amy swallowed the last few drops of her water and turned to face her new roommate, a quizzical expression on her face. "I'm Amy," she said tentatively, extending a hand towards the other woman. "I'm sorry I'm late.
Moving takes so much longer than I expected," Amy offered, smiling a little wanly as she marveled at the intensity of the glare she was receiving from her new roommate. She glanced around the apartment, taking in the sprawl of belongings surrounding Madison: the hundreds of books strewn across a well-used coffee table, the framed photographs covering every inch of available wall space, the towering stacks of documents and memorabilia neatly organized in the nearby park of shelves.
Madison waved a hand dismissively. "It's fine. I can wait.
I've been here all morning. I thought you said you'd be here an hour ago," Madison's words formed a single, pointed sentence. She had set down a small duffel bag that Amy had not noticed before. It looked full to the brim, with what looked like textbooks and workout gear spilling out of its open top.
"I apologize, I had some issues with the moving truck," Amy replied, taking a step back and tucking her hands self-consciously into her pockets.
“Just don’t make a habit of it and we will get along fine” Madison retorted, stepping closer and steadying her icy blue eyes on Amy's, "rules must be followed, our living conditions here determine the success of our academic performance."
Amy nodded, unsure of what kind of rules Madison was referring to, but determined to keep her new roommate happy. She took another look around the apartment, more aware now of the towering piles of books that seemed to accentuate the cramped space even further.
"Now," Madison began, breaking the awkward silence that had formed between them. "Since you finally here, allow me to show you around the place."
She stepped around Amy, who was doing her best to take in the woman's words and not dwell too much on what she had just implied about Amy's punctuality.
Madison moved toward the far side of the studio apartment with a sense of purpose and authority in her movements, as if she had owned the place for years already and knew every inch of it by heart.
Amy trailed after her, still unsure of exactly what to expect. The apartment had seemed small when she had first laid eyes on it, but seeing it from the inside, she understood just how limited her space would be.
Madison led the way through a designated path with minimal effort, guiding Amy through the cluttered mess as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"First things first," Madison said, stopping at the cluttered corner of the apartment. "You'll need to know the apartment rules as they are non-negotiable.
I've spent a lot of time and effort to make this place conducive to my academic performance and I expect this to continue even though you're living with me now." Madison continued, as she started listing off the rules. "No shoes or socks inside the apartment, no food in the bedrooms, and absolutely no guests without prior approval."
Amy felt a lump form in her throat, the idea of strict rules already making her feel uneasy and claustrophobic, but she kept listening, determined to respect Madison's wishes and make their living arrangement work.
Madison continued, her voice eerily calm and confident as she continued to elaborate on the apartment rules. "Cleanliness is a top priority, and you are expected to do your part by keeping the space tidy during your stay here. I'll provide a cleaning schedule to help us organize the chores and promote efficiency. If you fail to meet the schedule's expectations, I will not hesitate to take matters into my own hands and rectify the situation."
Amy nodded, trying her best to hide her nervousness.
The rules Madison had listed so far didn't seem too extreme, but she couldn't help but feel a twinge of discomfort as Madison began to list the next ones.
"Additionally," Madison paused briefly, her eyes narrowing as she continued. "You will be expected to be nude at all times when you are inside the apartment.
I find that having a distraction-free space is essential to a productive environment. I'll be nude as well, but we must respect each other's personal space and avoid any inappropriate behavior," Madison's words hung heavy in the air, lingering between them like a thick fog as Amy stood there stunned, her brain struggling to process what she had just heard.
Amy stared at her new roommate, her mind racing with questions and disbelief. "Um..." she stammered, searching for the right words to respond. "I'm sorry, Madison.
I don't think I heard you quite right," Amy said, trying to hide the confusion and horror that were building within her. "You expect me to be nude at all times when I'm here? But there are other people living on this floor...and what about privacy?"
Madison's face was impassive, but her eyes flashed with annoyance at Amy's question. "Of course, Amy. I meant within the privacy of our own apartment.
Unless we are both present, of course. But always when you are here," Madison replied, maintaining her cool, authoritative tone. "I'm sure you can understand the potential distractions clothing can cause. As I said, a distraction-free space is crucial to the success of our academic pursuits.
Amy stood there, frozen in shock, as Madison continued to explain her reasoning for the rule. "But I promise, you'll get used to it.
I know it might seem strange to you now, but I've been following this rule for years, and it's worked out quite well for me," Madison assured Amy with a confident smirk.
Despite her reassurance, Amy couldn't help but feel uneasy. She had never been comfortable in her own skin and had always felt self-conscious about her body. She couldn't imagine being naked all the time in front of another person, especially someone as intense and uncompromising as Madison.
“I… I really do t know if I can…” Amy stuttered.
Madison stepped closer to Amy, her 6ft height towering over Amy 5”4 self “How do you think I am supposed to study wondering what you look like under your clothes all the time, trust me this works and is not up for negotiations” she said with a firm edge to her voice, her words echoing in the tight space of the apartment.
Amy swallowed hard, suddenly feeling very smally and overwhelmed.
She could feel the weight of Madison’s words sinking in and the reality of the situation hitting her.
A part of her knew deep down that she couldn’t survive the school year living by such strict rules, and another part of her just didn’t want to risk the awkwardness of walking around naked in front of someone she hardly knew.
Amy was torn and tried to stay silent, inspecting the apartment more closely and mentally preparing herself for the road ahead.
"I understand your concerns," Madison continued, as if sensing Amy's struggle. "But trust me, it gets easier. And believe it or not, it does promote an atmosphere of inclusivity. We're both students here, we must be willing to adapt to each other's needs and recognize the importance of trust and openness."
Amy sighed, feeling the tightness in her chest loosen slightly in the face of her roommate's gentle encouragement.
She could see the logic in what Madison was saying, but she still couldn't shake the awkwardness that swirled within her. She wasn't certain if she could follow such an unprecedented rule, but she knew she needed a home for the school year, and without it, she would be homeless.
"I guess I could try," she conceded finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "But I think I might need some time to get used to it."
Madison nodded, smiling slightly. "I understand, Amy. We will keep our clothes on today and set up the apartment and begin being naked tomorrow.
Now that we have settled that, there are some final things I want you to know before you start unpacking," Madison said. "There are two sets of keys for the apartment, and you get the other one, we will have a cooking and cleaning schedule where we take turns on duties."
Amy nodded silently, accepting the key from her roommate's outstretched hand. She was still feeling overwhelmed, but she knew that there was little she could do but try to make the best of the situation.
She had already signed the lease and paid the deposit; there was no turning back now.
"Thank you," Amy murmured, taking the key from Madison's hand and slipping it into her pocket, feeling its cold weight against her thigh as she did so.
Madison gestured towards the cluttered section of the studio apartment. "Okay, as you can see, this is my corner of our space.
I've had it set up this way for years, and I find it very conducive to my studies and well-being," Madison began, her voice reverting to its usual businesslike tone.
Amy glanced around the space, nodding as if she understood what her roommate meant. It was indeed very organized, with everything in its place. A half-finished novel was open to the last marked page, surrounded by a multitude of academic textbooks and highlighters. That explained all the books Emily had said she was bringing on impulse.
“It’s a great layout,” Amy said, hoping her admiration sounded sincere.
Madison beamed, her perfect white teeth gleaming against her tanned skin. She seemed like the kind of person who spent a lot of time outdoors. Amy couldn’t imagine how she could manage being naked around Madison all the time, but she kept her thoughts to herself. Better to be quiet than to say something that would make her look inexperienced or naïve. Better to play along with the charade in the hopes that it would end soon.
"That's very impressive, Madison," Amy replied, taking another step back and attempting a smile. "I can tell you've really put a lot of thought into your space."
"Thank you," Madison said, beaming once more. "Now, let me show you the rest of the apartment, and then we can get started on unpacking."
She led the way towards the open area of the studio apartment, with Amy following close behind.
The space was uncluttered, and the white walls contrasted the furnishings, which were a mix of vintage and new.
A small kitchenette sat to the left, with a crooked mini-fridge, a dented microwave, and a beat-up counter with chipped tiles. On the right stood a cheap IKEA desk, with a computer and a printer on top. There were no posters or photographs hung up on the walls. The only vibrant color came from the abstract patterned rug that added texture to the otherwise dull studio.
Amy couldn't help but feel a little bit intimidated by the simplicity and order of the space. It was so different from her own cluttered and chaotic bedroom back home. But she kept her thoughts to herself, not wanting to offend her new roommate or imply that she was displeased with the living arrangement.
As they made their way towards the bathroom, Madison continued with the tour, "The bathroom is over there," she said, pointing to a door tucked away in the corner. "I think you'll find it to be quite functional. The shower is quite large and can fit both of us for when we shower together, toilet has a bidet, and a double sink for both of us” Madison said nonchalantly.
Amy was taken aback “Did you say shower together?” she questioned, her voice barely audible.
Madison raised an eyebrow and shrugged “Yes, what’s the big deal? It helps save water and it allows us to become more comfortable with one another” she replied with a dismissive wave.
Amy struggled to process the inappropriateness of the idea, but given the unusual nature of the request, she tried her best to keep her cool and listen to Madison's explanation.
“I am not a lesbian Amy, so don’t worry about that, showering together is on the rules list and is meant to make us closer as roommates. It wouldn't be ideal, but it's for the greater good," Madison asserted, a hint of impatience creeping into her voice.
Amy swallowed hard, the gravity of the situation slowly sinking in.
Madison seemed to have a clear vision of how she wanted their living arrangement to work, and Amy was in shock of everything so far, wondering what other rules their would be. It was clear that her new roommate valued functionality above all else, but Amy couldn't help but feel uncomfortable with some of these new expectations. She was still standing near the bathroom entrance, processing the unexpected showering arrangement detail in her mind.
"Okay," Amy said slowly, still trying to wrap her head around Madison's demands. "So, we are sharing a shower?" She asked hesitantly, her voice wavering just slightly.
"Yes, that's what I just said," Madison stated with a slight hint of annoyance in her voice.
"We'll save water and time that way. Besides, we're both adults and it's not a big deal."
Amy nodded, still feeling uneasy about the whole showering together situation. She had never shared a shower with anyone before, and the thought of doing so with a stranger was slightly unnerving. But she told herself to give it a chance and be open-minded about it.
"Okay, I understand," Amy said, trying to sound as confident as possible.
"If we're going to make this work, I guess we have to make some compromises. I can see how it would save water and time."
Madison smiled, her arrogance fading away for a moment, revealing a hint of compassion. "Good. That's the spirit, Amy. Adaptation is key to success."
Amy took a deep breath, trying to shake off the unease she felt regarding the showering arrangements. She then turned her attention to the rest of the tour.
"Your room is the other side of the studio, that nook over there," Madison indicated with a sweep of her arm towards the opened up area of the apartment that served as Amy's bedroom.
Amy looked at the scant space, taking note of the bare wooden shelves lining the walls and the single bed pushed up against them. It occurred to her that despite the window looking out onto the busy campus street below, the size of the bedroom seemed disproportionately small compared to the size of Madison's personal space.
However, Amy didn't dare voice her concerns to her new roommate, knowing that if she did, it would only lead to tension and arguments.
"The bed is quite comfortable," Madison added, noting Amy's hesitation as she studied the space. "I slept on it when I first moved in, and it's held up pretty well over time."
Amy nodded, still trying to mentally prepare herself for the reality of their unique living situation. "Okay, I can work with this," she said encouragingly, forcing herself to push her anxieties to the side.
“Oh I forgot to mention the bathroom door and your bedroom door are to never be shut at any point,” Madison chimed in, stepping closer to Amy's limited bedroom space as she continued to speak.
Amy frowned, "Why should we not shut the doors? For privacy?
For bathroom use?" she asked curiously.
Madison shook her head, "No, both doors are to remain open at all times. Not only to make our apartment feel more open, but also to encourage transparency and trust.
I want us to be able to see each other at all times, so we can always know where the other is and feel comfortable." Amy felt a surge of anxiety wash over her, but she kept her composure and simply nodded in agreement.
The rest of the afternoon passed in a blur as Amy attempted to unpack her belongings while keeping in mind the random list of rules and expectations Madison had presented during the tour.
Being naked all the time and showering together, that was a lot to take in, Amy was trying to keep a open mind but she couldn't shake the feeling of discomfort brewing within her.
As she closed the closet door to her new bedroom, Amy felt the weight of her clothes pressing heavily against her chest.
She had always been someone who took pride in her sense of privacy and autonomy, and the thought of living in such a regimented and monitored environment was daunting.
Amy finished unpacking and organizing her space walked out to the kitchen area and the smell was amazing as Madison was cooking dinner . It was cauliflower cacio e pepe, a dish favorite of Amy's, and she couldn't wait to dig in.
“Wow, Madison. This smells incredible,” Amy said, her stomach rumbling with hunger as she approached the counter.
“I thought you might like it, since it’s one of your favorites,” Madison replied, smiling as she stirred the pasta. “I picked up the ingredients earlier today. Thank you for filling out the roommate survey I sent you so I know what meals you like.”
Amy watched as Madison finished cooking and plated the meal. It looked too good to be true.
Amy's favorite Italian dish, cooked to perfection. The cauliflower was tender and soaked up the flavors of the cheese and pepper wonderfully. It was a big gesture from her new roommate, one that Amy couldn't help but appreciate.
“Madison, this is so thoughtful of you. I love cauliflower cacio e pepe,” Amy said, her mouth watering from the smell alone.
“I aim to please,” Madison said with a small smile.
“Now, sit down and let's eat before it gets cold.”
Amy obliged, taking a seat at the tiny kitchenette table. She watched as Madison gracefully moved around the kitchen, pouring wine into two glasses and joining her at the table.
They ate in silence for a while, enjoying the simple meal and the company. Amy couldn't help but feel grateful for Madison's hospitality, despite the strange turn of events that had led her to this apartment.
As they finished their meal, Madison spoke up.
"I'm glad you enjoyed the dinner, Amy. I care about your happiness here, you know."
Amy nodded, feeling a flicker of wariness in her chest. It was hard to know whether to trust Madison's words or not, given the timeline of events that had led them to their current arrangement.
"So, tomorrow it's time to start following the rules," Madison continued. "Keep your clothes off, shower together, and never close the doors and we can go over other issues as they arise. Again I am doing this primarily for the greater good of us both living peacefully while studying for our degrees," Madison reminded Amy in her typically firm but fair tone.
Amy hesitated, trying to push past her own discomfort and appreciate the intent behind the rules. "I understand, and I'm willing to try," Amy said, as she pushed aside her doubts and reluctance, deciding that she really didn't have a choice in the matter except to make the best of the situation.
With dinner finished, both Amy and Madison started cleaning up and discussing their schedules for the next day.
As they washed the dishes, Madison turned to Amy and said, "By the way, just so you know, you don't have to worry about any judgment from me about your body or anything like that. I believe it's important to be comfortable with yourself and I won't tolerate any negative self-talk."
Amy nodded, trying to push past her own insecurities. "Thank you, Madison. I appreciate that," she said, before changing the subject.
"So, what kind of extracurricular activities do you plan on pursuing at college this fall?"
I bit my lip, hesitant to share that I was on the fence about joining any campus organizations. "Well, I was thinking about trying out for the school's debate team," I said, remembering how much I enjoyed debating in my high school's speech and debate club.
"That sounds wonderful!" Madison beamed.
"I used to compete in speech and debate when I was in high school. I hope my skills transferred well to college level," Amy said, smiling nervously.
"Oh, I'm sure they have!" Madison replied. "You seem like the type of person who always puts her best foot forward."
Classes did not start for another week so they both would have plenty of free time as of now. The girls said good night to each other and went to their separate bedrooms . As Amy lay in her bed that evening, she thought about the day's events and her upcoming life in the experimental living arrangement. The idea of being naked at all times was hard to wrap her head around. She had always been a private person, preferring to keep her body covered up most of the time. But she couldn't deny that she was starting to feel settled in the apartment. The thought of spending the next several months living with Madison was daunting, but she had to admit that there was something about the woman's drive and focus that resonated with her.
