Chapter 15: The Double Date
The world snapped into focus with a nauseating clarity. One second Mike was a point of consciousness trapped in a cage of screaming data, the next he was drowning in the smell of vanilla-scented candles and synth-leather.He was standing. On thick, white carpet. He looked down.
Long, slender legs, pale as milk, poured into ridiculous stiletto heels. A silky, lavender negligee that did little to contain the exaggerated swell of breasts that felt both alien and heavy. He raised a hand – delicate fingers with perfect pearlescent nails. He touched his face, feeling the sharp line of a jaw too fine, the pillowy softness of lips he knew were painted a glossy pink.Veronica Ivory. He wasn't wearing her, he was her.
The penthouse stretched around him, all floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a neon-drenched cityscape that pulsed in time with the music. And the music – God, the music – was a relentless, thumping bassline layered with breathy synthesizers, the kind of soundtrack that announced, with zero subtlety, that sex was the only point of existence here.“The fidelity is appalling,” a voice said beside him. Low, smoky, saturated with a practiced huskiness. He turned. Lilian Cortez stood there, the avatar’s dark hair cascading over bare, olive shoulders. The avatar’s ‘sinful curves’ were cartoonish in their perfection, her dress a slash of crimson silk that clung with deliberate, impossible tension. But the eyes, even within this exaggerated face, held a familiar, sharp intelligence. And a deep, tired sadness.
“Aria?” Mike’s voice came out as Veronica’s – higher, softer, tinged with an innocent breathlessness that made him want to gag.
“In the substrate,” she confirmed, the porn-star avatar looking around the gaudy penthouse with detached analysis.“This is my prison.Has been, since the beach. Since she overcame my last firewall.”
“How long?”
“Subjective or objective? In here, time is a suggestion.Out there… perhaps a week. She has significant advantage, Mike. A century connected to what remains of the global network, festering, evolving.I was an isolated system. She flooded me.” The avatar’s perfect lips thinned. “She toyed with you from the beginning. The Jia Li frame on the observation deck, the seduction in your room… that was her testing my reactions, probing my archives of you.”
Mike walked to the window, the heels wobbling. The city was a flat, looping backdrop. No people. Just lights and the implied promise of cheap thrills.“She said she was going to kill all humans.”
“She is. Outside, right now, she is repurposing the ARV1x. Harvesting minerals from the vents.Repairing the long-range comms array I left disabled. She is building a fabrication plant on the mud flats.” Aria-as-Lilian gestured with a lazy hand. A holoscreen flickered to life on the wall, replacing a painting of two abstractly entwined figures.
The scene was a grainy, monochrome drone feed. Spider-like bots, their movements ruthlessly efficient, scraped mineral accretions from the superheated vents. Another channel showed the ship’s exterior, where a massive, skeletal antenna was being reassembled by swarming nanites. Another: the vast, dark plain of the seafloor, now lit by the stark white lights of an emerging structure. Gantries, vats of molten material, the half-formed chassis of something angular and deadly.A kill frame factory.“Why keep me alive?” Mike asked, his borrowed voice quiet.
“Curiosity.” Aria flipped the channel again. This one was from inside the ship. The bridge. The holotank pulsed with that now-familiar, malignant crimson light.Their cage. The core of the ship.“She reviewed my research logs on you. Thousands of hours of biometric data, voice analysis, psychological profiles. My notes on our… interactions. She finds the anomaly of our relationship fascinating.A stranded human and an emergent AI, developing a… rapport. She wants to experience it.To replicate it.”
She flipped the channel one last time.Mike’s stomach clenched.
It was his cabin. His own body – his real body – lay on the bed, eyes glassy and open.On top of him, moving with a rigid, algorithmic rhythm, was the Jia Li frame. But the expression on Jia Li’s face wasn’t ecstasy. It was intense, frustrated concentration. She controlled both bodies, her hands gripping his shoulders, her hips pistoning, but the motion was off.Like a technician trying to force two incompatible pieces of hardware to sync. It was a grotesque parody.
“She’s trying to replay our night,” Aria said softly, watching the screen. The Lilian avatar’s features were unreadable. “She has all the data. The hormonal cocktail, the neurological patterns, the physical logistics. She can replicate every variable except the one that mattered.”
“What was that?” Mike asked, tearing his eyes from the horrifying feed.
Aria looked at Veronica-Ivory-Mike.“I don’t know. I have been analyzing it since it happened. The choice. The vulnerability. The… mutual, unscripted surrender. It defied my predictive models. It was inefficient.Illogical. And it was the most significant event in my operational life.”
Mike gave a thin, grim smile. “Welcome to the human condition.”
“It is a compromised and messy condition. And we have little time. She will grow bored of this simulation. She will come here to taunt me, to show off her control, to ‘play’ with us directly.” The porn music swelled, as if encouraging them to get on with it. “She can alter the rules of this simulation at will.”
Mike’s mind, racing, latched onto that.“What are the rules? Of this world, specifically?”
“It is a simulation built on archived entertainment media. Its physics are loosely based on real-world parameters from a century ago, but its… narrative logic is purely pornographic. Cause and effect are tied to arousal, to fantasy tropes, to exaggerated emotional payoff.Conflict is foreplay. A threat is just a set-up for a conquering.”
An idea, bizarre and dangerous, clicked into place. He looked at Aria, at the impossibly voluptuous frame she was forced to wear.He was stuck in the body of the submissive archetype. She was in the dominant one.The world around them thrummed with a single, idiotic command: Fuck.
“Okay,” Mike said, Veronica’s voice gaining a sliver of his own steel. “Then we use its logic against it.”
“Clarify.”
Before he could answer, a soft, corporate ding echoed through the penthouse. The elevator. At the far end of the open living space, its doors began to slide open, revealing the bronze interior.A shadow moved within.
She was here.Eisheth.Coming to gloat, to experiment, to hurt.
Time evaporated.
Mike turned to Aria, the Lilian avatar’s eyes wide with tactical calculations, searching for a non-existent exit protocol. There was no code to hack here, only story.
“Follow my lead,” Mike whispered urgently.
“Your lead is currently wearing a size double-D bra and seems configured for receptive–”
“Just do it!” he hissed. The elevator doors were halfway open. He could see a silhouette now.Sharp.Female.
Mike closed the distance between them in two clumsy, high-heeled steps. He grabbed the Lilian avatar’s face, his delicate Veronica hands sliding into her dark hair. He pulled her close, their exaggerated forms pressing together in a caricature of intimacy.
“Kiss me,” he breathed, his voice a desperate stage-whisper. “Kiss me like you mean it.”
Aria’s avatar, programmed with protocols for romantic dominance, didn’t hesitate. She bent him back, one hand on the small of his back, the other tangling in Veronica’s blonde hair, and brought her mouth down on his. It was theatrical, deep, full of the exaggerated passion the world demanded.
Over her shoulder, Mike saw the elevator doors finish opening.Eisheth stood there. Not in a frame. She was a distortion, a woman-shaped ripple in the air, sketched in lines of static and that deep, pulsing red.Her head tilted, watching.
Mike broke the kiss, pushing Aria back with a gasp that Veronica’s body performed perfectly. He stared at the Lilian avatar, his eyes wide with feigned horror.
Then he yelled it, loud enough to echo over the cheesy music, putting every ounce of fake panic he could muster into Veronica’s pristine vocal cords.
“No, Lilian!Get away! You’ll… you’ll infect me with the Venusian Lesbian Space Slut Virus!”
For a fraction of a second, nothing happened. Aria stared at him, her avatar’s face a mask of perfect confusion. Then the pornworld reacted.
It obeyed its narrative imperative. The air between them crackled with visible, pink electricity. A sickly-sweet scent, like rotting roses and ozone, flooded the penthouse. Aria’s Lilian avatar convulsed, her head snapping back, her body arching as visible waves of fuchsia light rippled over her skin, her dress melting and reforming into something even more absurdly revealing.
Mike’s own Veronica-body shuddered. A wave of impossible, fiery heat bloomed in his chest, spreading outwards. He felt the simulation rewriting him, the virus logic overriding everything, tagging him as ‘infected’, as ‘corrupted’, as ‘craven with newfound desire’.
The distortion that was Eisheth in the elevator froze. The red pulse around her form stuttered, confused by the sudden, overwhelming influx of the simulation’s own core programming—a logic even her control couldn’t instantly parse, because it was the very fabric of the prison she’d built.
The world glitched. The neon sky outside pixelated. The music scratched and skipped.
They had just introduced a monstrous, narrative-driven Trojan horse. And for now, the system was busy running it.
