Chapter 1: Introduction
Max's day had been filled with the usual humdrum of spreadsheets and morning meetings. As he stepped through the door of their shared apartment, he was greeted by the familiar scent of Amelia's vanilla-scented candles and the soft hum of her favorite indie rock playlist. He kicked off his shoes, the leather soles sliding easily against the hardwood floor, as he made his way to the kitchen.
The apartment was a haven of chaos, with Amelia's books scattered across the coffee table and her sketchbook open on the kitchen counter, a half-eaten bowl of cereal beside it.
Max couldn't help but shake his head, a small smile playing on his lips. He grabbed a glass from the cabinet and filled it with water from the fridge.
"You know, most people use plates," he called out, leaning against the counter.
Amelia's laughter floated from the bedroom, followed by the sound of her clothes hitting the floor. "Where's the fun in that?" she replied, stepping into the living room, completely naked except for a pair of black lace panties.
Max's eyes lingered a moment too long, taking in the curve of her hips, the slope of her shoulders. He quickly looked away, his cheeks flushing.
"You're shameless, you know that?" he muttered, taking a sip of his water.
Amelia just shrugged, smirking as she flopped onto the couch. "That's me, the shameless roommate." She propped her feet up on the coffee table, not bothering to hide her nakedness. "You should get used to it. It's not like I haven't seen you walk around in your boxers."
Max sighed, leaning back against the counter. He had gotten used to it, but that didn't mean it was easy. Amelia had a way of making everything seem so... casual.
Amelia had a way of making everything seem so casual, so comfortable. Max remembered the first time he had realized this about her. They had been living together for a month, and one sunny afternoon, he had come home to find her sunbathing on the balcony, completely nude. She hadn't even looked up when he had walked in, just waved a lazy hand and said, "Hey, Max. Want some lunch?"
He had stammered something incoherent, his eyes darting away from her bare body, and Amelia had just laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent a shiver down his spine. "Relax, Max," she had said, propping herself up on one elbow. "It's just a body. We all have one." From that day forward, he had known that Amelia was unlike anyone he had ever met.
She was nearly as comfortable in her own skin as she was in their shared apartment.
Max let out a chuckle, remembering. "You know, most people would at least put on a robe."
Amelia rolled her eyes, stretching languidly on the couch. "And most people are boring. Besides, it's just you and me. What's the point?"
"Fair enough," Max conceded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He glanced at the sketchbook on the counter, a drawing of a woman with long, flowing hair and piercing eyes catching his attention. "You're up late again.
Still trying to capture that perfect line?" Max asked, gesturing to the sketchbook with his chin.
Amelia lazily flipped the page, revealing a half-finished portrait of a man with sharp features and intense eyes. "Eh, it's a work in progress. Some things aren't meant to be rushed." She closed the book, a slight smirk playing on her lips. "You know, Max, you should really try drawing. It's a great way to relax and express yourself."
Max chuckled, shaking his head. "I can barely draw a stick figure, Amelia.
