Chapter 1: The Open Door
The cigarette smoke curled towards the ceiling, lazy ribbons against the soft pink paint plastered with faded band posters. Kim lay sprawled diagonally across her unmade bed, sheets tangled around her ankles. One hand rested behind her head, the other tracing slow circles beneath the worn waistband of her sweatpants. The afternoon sun slanted through the blinds, striping the chaos of her desk – overflowing ashtrays, tangled headphones, half-empty soda cans. The sweet, acrid bite of tobacco hung thick in the air, mingling strangely with the warmer, muskier scent blooming from her core. Her door, as always, yawned wide open to the hallway.
Her eyes were half-closed, focused on the water stain on the ceiling that vaguely resembled Australia. Her touch was idle, exploratory, less about chasing a peak and more about the pleasant buzz thrumming under her skin. It was a lazy indulgence, a way to occupy the drifting hours before she’d inevitably have to think about dinner or a shower. Wendy’s openness about her own life, her casual mentions of dates and desires, had planted seeds Kim hadn’t realized were dormant. Now, alone in her sanctuary, she was absently watering them. What did that feel like for Wendy? The thought itself was a low thrum of heat.
The cigarette perched precariously on the edge of the crowded ashtray beside her pillow sent a delicate plume skyward. Ash lengthened, threatening to spill. Her breathing hitched slightly as her fingers found a slightly firmer rhythm, the friction sending little sparks up her spine. She imagined… not a specific person, just a presence. A warmth. A hand that wasn’t her own. The image was hazy, undefined, charged with the illicit thrill of privacy performed in plain sight. The open door felt less like an oversight and more like a dare she hadn’t consciously set. She was adrift in the low tide of sensation.
Footsteps. Near.
Not heavy, just the familiar, soft tread of bare feet on the hallway carpet. Kim froze. Every muscle locked. Her hand snapped away from her sweatpants like she’d touched a live wire. Her eyes flew wide open, fixed not on Australia, but on the doorway.
Wendy stood there. Not shocked, not angry. Just… there. Her gaze swept over Kim – the tangled sheets, the discarded sweatpants bunched low on her hips, the hand frozen mid-air, the unmistakable flush crawling up Kim’s neck. Her expression was unreadable for a heartbeat, two. Then, her eyes flickered to the still-smoldering cigarette. A tiny sigh, almost imperceptible, escaped her lips.
She met Kim’s wide, mortified stare. Wendy’s voice, when it came, was calm. Dry. Matter-of-fact. No tremor, no judgment coating the words. Just a statement landing with the weight of a brick.
"Next time," Wendy said, her gaze steady, holding Kim’s paralyzed one, "knock before you come in, huh?"
She didn’t wait for a response. Didn’t smirk, didn’t frown. She simply turned and walked back down the hallway, her steps retreating with the same quiet rhythm as they’d arrived. The space where she’d stood felt suddenly, violently empty.
Kim couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. The heat that had been pooling low in her belly now roared up her chest, neck, face, a wildfire of utter humiliation. She felt exposed. Not just physically, but down to her bones. The lingering scent of tobacco and her own arousal now felt cloying, suffocating, mortifying. The open doorway, usually a symbol of their easy, uncomplicated closeness, gaped like an accusation.
Slowly, mechanically, she pulled the sheet up over her legs. Her hand, still tingling from the abrupt halt, trembled slightly. She stared at the open door, the empty hallway beyond. Wendy’s words echoed, crisp and clear, shattering the lazy afternoon stillness. Knock before you come in. The implication hung thick in the smoke-filled air: Because I might be doing something private. Something you shouldn’t just walk in on. The sanctuary felt violated, not by her mother’s presence, but by the sudden, glaring awareness of her own lack of boundaries. Of the invisible line she hadn’t even known existed, now irrevocably crossed.
The ash on her cigarette finally broke off, falling silently onto the crumpled sheet beside her. Kim didn’t notice. She just kept staring at the door, the flush on her cheeks deepening, the comfortable chaos of her room suddenly feeling like a stage with the curtains ripped open. The silence pressed in, heavy and unfamiliar, broken only by the frantic thudding in her ears and the faint smell of Wendy’s lingering perfume mixed with smoke and shame. The open door wasn't an invitation anymore. It was a question she couldn't answer.
Not right now. Not as the heavy heat of embarrassment slowly began to dissipate, replaced by an ache that was no longer just from arousal, but from the need to understand, to explore, to… fuck. Goddamnit. She couldn’t even think straight.
Kim lay there, quiet and still, the sheet now a tangled mess around her legs, the room a blur of band posters and memories and smoke. Her heartbeat slowed, her breaths deepening, the mortification morphing into something else. Something rawer. Something more primal. Something hotter.
Fuck, fuck, fuck.
She was still hard. Still aching.
Still throbbing. Still so fucking hard. Kim couldn't believe it. She lay there, one hand resting on her belly, the other gripping the sheet beside her, knuckles white. The room was a hazy blur, the scent of tobacco and arousal clinging to her like a second skin. She could feel the heat between her legs, the swollen, pounding need. Despite the humiliation, despite the shock, she was still achingly, exquisitely turned on.
She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath. She could see Wendy’s face in her mind, the steady gaze, the calm, dry voice.
And against all logic, against the burning heat of embarrassment still simmering beneath the surface, Kim felt her body responding. The ache intensified, a low throb that seemed to pulse in time with her heartbeat. She could still feel the ghost of her own touch, the memory of her fingers tracing circles, teasing, tempting.
Fucking hell.
Kim let out a shaky breath, her body tensing as she dared to explore the sensation. She let her fingers drift down, tentatively touching the same spot she’d been exploring before. The contact sent a jolt through her, sharp and electric.
