Chapter 20: Casino Conquest

The floral-scented casino air felt thin, insufficient after the alley’s grittiness. They stood in their disheveled state—Holly in her crumpled silver dress, Red clutching her bodysuit, Jack with dollar bills still sticking to his neck—drawing a few sideways glances from tourists lugging巨型 plastic cups of coins. The adrenaline was curdling now, leaving a jagged, restless energy. Holly’s eyes were lit with it.

She clapped her hands once, a sharp, decisive sound. “Okay. Listen up.” Her voice was low, a general issuing orders in a hostile land. “The night is young. We are not.” She smiled, but it was all teeth. “We’re going to farm this casino. Everyone has twenty minutes. Find someone. Bring them up to the penthouse. We’re having an orgy.”

Raven leaned against a faux-marble column, already scanning the bodies moving through the slot machine canyon. “Parameters?” Her tone was cool, operational.

“Diversify,” Holly said, her mind working fast. “Red—find a woman. Someone who looks like she’s pretending to be here for the slots. Raven—a man. Not a tourist. Someone who looks like he came here to lose something on purpose. Jack, you’re with me.” She turned her gaze on him. The possessiveness from the stage was still there, mixed now with a conspiratorial glee. “We’re going to find two drag queen transvestites. The most gorgeous, intimidating queens in this whole fucking place.”

Red let out a low whistle. “Ambitious.”

“It’s Vegas,” Holly shrugged, as if that explained everything. Maybe it did. “Twenty minutes. Clock starts now. Meet at the penthouse elevators. If you’re late, you’re locked out. Go.”

They scattered like billiard balls struck hard. Raven vanished first, a shadow melting into the deeper shadows near the high-stakes blackjack pits. Red shimmied into her lace bodysuit right there in the lobby, not caring who saw, then fluffed her riotous curls and strode toward a glowing bar where a cluster of women in bridal party sashes were laughing too loudly.

Holly grabbed Jack’s hand. Her palm was hot, dry. “Stay close. And keep your eyes open.”

They moved into the heart of the casino floor. The sensory overload was immediate and total. A wall of sound—the manic, tinny melodies of a thousand slot machines, the riffle of cards, the occasional shout of triumph or groan of loss. The lights were a bottomless assault: flashing bulbs, spinning neon, the cool glow of digital roulette screens. The carpet was a frenetic pattern meant to hide stains, and it swallowed their footsteps.

Holly moved with purpose, her eyes skipping over faces. She dismissed the families, the elderly couples, the packs of frat boys already stumbling. She was hunting for a specific kind of glamour, a particular brand of armor.

“There,” Jack said, the word leaving his mouth before he’d fully processed it. He nodded toward a corner bar, darker and quieter than the rest. Two figures sat on stools, their silhouettes unmistakable. One wore a gown of emerald sequins that caught the low light like a shattered galaxy, her hair a towering confection of jet-black waves. The other was in classic silver lamé, hair slicked back into a severe, platinum chignon. Their profiles were sharp, elegant, and they were speaking quietly to each other over cocktails, an island of composed artistry in the sea of chaos.

“Perfect,” Holly breathed. She dropped Jack’s hand and walked toward them, not hesitating for a second.

Jack followed, a familiar cocktail of anxiety and thrill bubbling in his gut. The Queen in emerald saw them first. She turned, a slow, measured movement. Her makeup was impeccable, a work of art—cut crease eyeshadow, a perfect Cupid’s bow lip. Her eyes, lined in kohl, assessed them without warmth or welcome.

“Can we help you, sweets?” she asked. Her voice was a smooth, rich baritone, utterly unapologetic.

Holly leaned against the bar, flashing a smile that was both disarming and challenging. “I hope so. My friend and I were just saying how you two are the most stunning people we’ve seen all night. In all of Vegas, probably.”

The Queen in silver glanced over, a smirk playing on her lips. “Flattery will get you everywhere, darling. And then it will get you a bill.” Her voice was lighter, melodic.

“We’re not selling anything,” Jack said, surprising himself by speaking. “We’re… recruiting.”

Both Queens arched perfectly drawn eyebrows.

Holly jumped in. “We have a penthouse suite. A view to die for. An obscene amount of complimentary champagne. And a serious lack of fabulousness.” She leaned in slightly. “We’re looking to spice up our evening. Significantly. And we thought… who better to provide the spice?”

There was a long silence. The emerald Queen took a slow sip of her drink, her eyes never leaving Holly’s. “What’s your name, sugar?”

“Holly. This is Jack.”

“I’m Gia,” said the emerald one. She nodded to her companion. “This is Alyssa. And what, precisely, are you proposing? A private viewing? Because, honey, our rates are for the stage.”

“I’m not proposing a transaction,” Holly said, her voice dropping, becoming more intimate. “I’m proposing an experience. A mutually beneficial… party. No cameras. No audience. Just a private, penthouse-level exploration of... fun. With people who understand the art of performance.”

Alyssa (silver lamé) laughed, a genuine, sparkling sound. “You’re bold. I’ll give you that. You drag a lot of strange girls up to your room, Holly?”

“Only the extraordinary ones,” Holly shot back without missing a beat.

Gia studied Jack. “And you’re okay with this? With us?”

All three women looked at him. He felt the weight of their gazes. He thought of Jason in the hotel room, the surprising rightness of it. This was different, wilder, a leap into a deeper unknown. He met Gia’s eyes. “I’m learning to be okay with extraordinary things.”

A slow, brilliant smile spread across Gia’s face, transforming her expression from regal to radiant. “Well, alright then.” She finished her drink. “A private party does sound more intriguing than another watered-down cosmo in this dungeon.” She looked at Alyssa, who gave a slight, mischievous nod.

“Lead the way, darlings,” Alyssa said, sliding off her stool. She was taller than Jack, moving with a dancer’s grace.

As they walked back through the casino, Gia and Alyssa gliding beside them like exotic royalty, Jack’s pulse hammered. He looked over at Holly. She winked, utterly fearless, already relishing her victory.

Across the vast room, he caught a glimpse of Red. She was at a Wheel of Fortune machine, her arm linked with a brunette woman in a sleek pantsuit. The woman was laughing, a blush on her cheeks, as Red whispered something in her ear. Red saw Jack, flashed a thumbs-up, and subtly nodded toward the elevators.

Near the craps tables, Raven stood beside a man. He was in his late thirties, maybe, with a tired, intelligent face and salt-and-pepper stubble. He wore a simple black button-down, sleeves rolled up. He wasn’t watching the dice. He was watching Raven, a look of captivated confusion on his face, as if she were a complex equation he’d just stumbled upon. Raven held a single casino chip, rolling it over her knuckles in a continuous, hypnotic loop. She said something. The man nodded slowly, then followed her as she turned and began walking toward the bank of golden elevators.

They converged in the plush, quiet elevator lobby. No one spoke. The group was an improbable constellation: Holly, triumphant and flushed; Jack, nervous but steady; Gia and Alyssa, surveying the luxury with appraising, unimpressed eyes; Red, nuzzling the neck of the brunette, who looked happily dazed; Raven and her quiet, intense man who kept glancing at her as if expecting the illusion to break.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. They all stepped inside. The doors closed, sealing them in a mirrored, velvet-lined box. The only sound was the faint hydraulic whir as they began their rapid ascent to the penthouse.

Holly pressed the button for their floor, then leaned back against the wall, a queen surveying her assembled court. A slow, satisfied smile touched her lips. The hunt was over. The game was just beginning.
