Chapter 6: The Morning of Change
Dawn came soft and grey through the wooden shutters, the first birds beginning their chorus somewhere beyond the garden. I surfaced from sleep slowly, warm and heavy and content, and found Lisa already sitting on the edge of the mattress beside me. She was dressed in a simple cotton shift, her hair loose and dark around her shoulders.
"Morning, sister," she said softly.
The word still made my chest flutter. "Morning."
She smiled and brushed a strand of hair from my forehead. "I wanted to wake you before the house got busy. We have breakfast, then the administration building, and the ferry. It's a full day."
I sat up, the nightdress pooling around my hips. My body felt strange, still adjusting to the openness of this place, but the unease that had gripped me so tight on my first night had loosened. I had made my choice. I had spoken it out loud. Now I only had to see it through.
"Is it hard?" I asked. "The process?"
Lisa tilted her head. "The injections sting a little. The tattoo takes an hour or two. The paperwork is boring." She shrugged. "None of it is hard. The hard part was deciding. And you've already done that."
She leaned in and pressed her lips to my forehead, and I closed my eyes. It was not a sexual touch, not even close. It was the kind of gesture a sister might give a sister, and that alone meant so much here. The island had rebuilt that word for me. Sister. Not by blood. By choice.
"Come," she said, standing and offering her hand. "Breakfast, then we go."
---
The kitchen smelled of coconut and fresh bread, and the whole family was already gathered around the table. Jenny sat against Adam's side, both of them unclothed, as was the island's way. Hana and Taro were there too, dressed in loose sarongs, and the table was laden with fruit, warm flatbreads, and a steaming pot of something that smelled of honey and ginger.
I had just settled into my chair, dressed in the same crop top and shorts from my arrival, when Adam cleared his throat.
"Emma," he said, and his voice had a gentle weight to it. "Before you go to the administration building, there is something I would like to do. If you are willing."
I looked up, curious. "What is it?"
He exchanged a glance with Jenny, who nodded encouragingly. Then he reached into a cloth bag by his chair and pulled out a small camera, old-fashioned, the kind that used film.
"I would like to photograph you as you are now," he said. "Before the tattoo. Before the injections change you. This is the only record there will ever be of your old self."
My stomach dropped. "You want me to... to undress?"
"Just once," Jenny said, her voice gentle. "Many of us who came from outside did the same. It is a farewell to who you were."
I looked at Lisa, my silent anchor, and she nodded. "It's okay. If you want to."
My hands found the hem of my crop top without quite meaning to. A flush crept up my neck. For two days I had watched everyone else move through the world naked and unashamed, and I had worn a nightdress to bed, clothes by day, a visitor clinging to the mainland's modesty. But now I was being asked to set that modesty down, in front of these people, in the bright morning light.
"In a few days," Adam said, "you will be naked in front of anyone on this island. It will be natural. It will be who you are. I am going to be one of your new fathers, Emma. There is nothing shameful in this."
New father. The words settled into me. He was not a stranger. He was not a leering man with a camera. He was Adam, Lisa's foster father, a kind and patient man who had welcomed me into his home. And he was right. The modesty I clung to was a mainland thing. Here, it had no meaning.
"Okay," I whispered, and the word came out smaller than I wanted.
I stood, and my fingers found the hem of the crop top again. This time I lifted it, pulling it over my head and dropping it in a heap on the chair. The morning air touched my bare skin and I shivered. Then my shorts, the button and zipper, and I stepped out of them. I was left in nothing but my underwear, plain white cotton, the sort of thing a mainland student would wear.
Beyond that, I faltered. Lisa rose and came to me, her hands gentle on my shoulders.
"You can do this," she murmured. "I'll be right here."
I took a breath, and then I unhooked my bra, letting it fall, and peeled off my panties. And there I stood, naked for the first time in front of them all.
The flush spread down my neck to my chest. I felt small and exposed. My body was not what the island's women had. It was ordinary, the body of a girl who had spent years hunched over books. My breasts were small, two modest handfuls, with pale nipples that tightened in the cool air. My hips were a little narrow, my ribs slightly visible beneath the skin. There was a faint scar on my knee from a childhood fall, and my thighs were softer than I would have liked. The whole of me felt less than the confident, everlactating bodies of the women around me.
But no one stared with judgment. Jenny looked at me warmly. Hana smiled. Taro kept his gaze politely soft. And Adam lifted the camera to his eye.
"Just stand naturally," he said. "Don't hold yourself tight. You are beautiful, Emma."
I tried to relax, but my shoulders stayed bunched. He clicked the shutter.
"Now turn to the side."
I turned, and the click came again.
"One more. Hands at your sides. Good."
Click.
The camera lowered. Adam set it down and crossed to me. He did not touch me, just stood close enough that I could smell the warm, sun-baked scent of him.
"You are saying goodbye to that body," he said. "Where you go next is written on you. It will mark you. But you will always be able to look at these photographs and remember the woman who made the choice to come here."
My throat was tight. I nodded, wordless.
Lisa came to me then and wrapped her arms around me, skin against skin, and I leaned into her, letting the embarrassment bleed away. In her arms it was not shameful. It was almost tender.
"Come," Jenny said, rising from the table. "Let's eat, and then we go."
Breakfast passed in a blur of warm bread and honeyed tea. I ate with my hands, my nakedness still strange against the wooden chair, but no one looked at me differently. Jenny pressed a kiss to my shoulder as she passed. Adam smiled across the table. It was ordinary here, being bare, and with each passing moment the tightness in my chest eased a little more.
When the meal was done, we rose. The farewell at the door was gentler than I expected. Adam held me for a long moment, his arms solid around my back, and told me he would see me soon. I was family now, he said. The paperwork was just a formality. Jenny kissed my forehead, and Hana and Taro each clasped my hand. Then Lisa took my elbow and we stepped out into the bright morning.
The village was coming alive. People moved along the paths in various states of dress, mostly none at all, carrying baskets of fruit and bundles of fiber. A man carrying a fishing net called a greeting to Lisa and she waved back, grinning. The air smelled of salt and flowers, and beyond the rooftops I could glimpse the blue shimmer of the sea.
We came to a low building of white stone set back from the path, its walls hung with climbing vines. A wooden sign above the door read ADMINISTRATION in faded letters, and beneath it, in smaller script, NEW REGISTRATIONS.
Inside was cooler, dimmer. A single desk dominated the room, cluttered with papers and a computer that hummed faintly. Behind it sat a man in a loose shirt, his dark hair unkempt, his face wearing the expression of someone who had been at work too long and expected nothing good from the morning. He looked up as we entered, and something close to annoyance flickered across his features.
Lisa stepped forward, her voice bright. "We're here for a new registration."
The man said nothing. He pressed a bell on his desk, a small brass thing, and its ring cut through the quiet. A door at the back opened, and a young woman walked in. She was completely naked, her body sleek and smooth, her breasts full and tipped with dark nipples. She moved with an easy, unselfconscious grace, her hips swaying as she crossed to the desk.
Without a word, she dropped to her knees and ducked under the desk. The man let out a slow breath, leaning back in his chair, his eyes half-closing. The sound of his zipper was faint, and then a wet, rhythmic sound began.
Lisa cleared her throat. "Sir. New registration."
The man sighed, clearly annoyed at being interrupted. "Computers are down," he said, waving a hand at the screen. "Can't enter a name in the system. Nothing works on this island. I can do nothing but releasing my stress in her mouth." he patted the girl's mouth.
Lisa & I looked at each other. My stomach sank. "Then what do we do?" Lisa said.
He looked at me properly then, his eyes traveling over my bare body with a pragmatic, assessing gaze. "Fill out the hand form. There's a paper copy. And you take the first dose of the injections today." He gestured vaguely. "Then you come back in two months for the second dose, and we finish the registration then."
I blinked. "Two months?"
"Your body needs to accept the serum," he said. "Body can't change overnigjt. First dose starts the process. Second dose finishes it. That's how it works."
Lisa squeezed my arm. "That's fine," she said. "We'll be back."
The man nodded, reaching into a drawer and pulling out a thick sheaf of paper. He slid it across the desk. "Fill this out. Mainland info. Name, birth date, place of origin. All of it."
I took the form and a pen, my hands slightly unsteady, and sat in the chair across from him. The questions were straightforward. Emma Hartley. Birth date. My parents' names. My college. The city where I had been studying. Each line felt like a thread being cut, connecting me to a life I was leaving behind. But I wrote it all down, my handwriting careful and clear, and when I reached the last line I looked up.
"Done."
The man grunted, not looking away from his screen, though the sounds beneath the desk had shifted into a deeper, steadier rhythm. "Now. Do you want to change your breast size?"
My cheeks flushed. "What?"
"Breast enlargement," he said flatly. "The serum can do it. Comes with the lactation treatment. Do you want a size change?"
Lisa leaned in, her voice warm at my ear. "You can choose, sis. We, who were born here are naturally big breasted. We normally don't change our size. But outsiders can choose. Just be careful. Don't go too big. Extra large and you can barely move. Some outsiders chose too big once from excitement. Learned that lesson."
I looked at her. She was good, maybe a F, compact and neat, her nipples dark against her skin. I thought of the island's women, the full heavy breasts of Jenny and Hana, the way they fed their children and their lovers without hesitation. Yeah, large breast would be good.
"One size bigger than you, i think," I said. Lisa said, "I am an F. But i think you can handle H. They're big but not oversized. Your choice, F, G, or H." I took a breath, "H cup for me." i said to the man.
The man raised an eyebrow, "Not a bad decision." He grunted and patted the girl's head again. The young woman surfaced from under the desk, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand. She gave the desk a little pat and disappeared through the back door, returning moments later with a tray.
On the tray sat two glass vials, one clear, one milky, and a coil of tubing attached to a needle. A pack of something that looked like an industrial-grade breast pump sat beside them.
"Come here," the man said, and I moved around the desk to stand before him.
The sting was sharp and brief, and the clear liquid went in with a faint pressure. Then the milky one, thick and slow. I watched my breast as the serum entered, and I could feel it, a strange heat spreading through the tissue. I had been naked only before Adam before, and baring my breasts in front of another man wasn't easy. My cheeks burned with embarrassment as I sat there, legs dangling, exposed. The man's gaze felt different from Adam's—clinical rather than intimate. I swallowed hard, forcing myself to remain still as he worked. The serum was stronger than I'd expected, its potency matching my choice for the H cup size. A higher concentration meant faster results, more significant changes to come. I clenched my fists at my sides, determined to endure this first step toward becoming part of the island's family.
"Lactation serum," he said. "It'll start producing within the week. The enlargement takes time. A few months to get where you want."
He did the same to the right breast with a fresh needle, and I flinched at the second sting. Then he set the tubing aside. "That's it. Come back in two months."
I slid off the desk, my chest feeling odd, warm and slightly heavy. I touched a hand to my breast and felt the difference already, a subtle firmness that hadn't been there before. Something had begun.
Lisa took my hand, her fingers warm. "Ready, sister?"
I looked at her, then down at my own body, at the small round marks where the needles had gone in. I was no longer a visitor. I was a woman in the middle of becoming something new, something the island would shape and mark as its own.
"Yes," I said. "I'm ready."
And we walked out together into the bright morning.
We walked out together into the bright morning.
The path back to the ferry led us through the heart of the village, and I felt the sun on my skin differently now. Before, every patch of bareness had been a conscious act, a choice I made and then re-made with every step. Now my body simply was. I had been injected. I had been measured. Somewhere in the administration building, a paper form with my name on it sat in a drawer, waiting for its completion.
The gate came into view, the same wooden arch where two days ago I had stood with my skirt pooled around my ankles and my heart pounding in my throat. A guard I didn't recognize stood there, a tall woman with short-cropped hair and a tattoo curling over her collarbone. She took my visitor's pass, and nodded.
"I believe you enjoy your visit," she said. Not a question. A statement.
I felt Lisa's hand slide into mine as we passed through the arch and onto the long wooden jetty. The ferry bobbed at the end, a white-and-blue hull with a few passengers already on deck. The mainland was a smudge on the horizon, grey and distant, but it was there.
Lisa stopped at the gangway and looked at me, her head tilted. "You're still bare, sis. You can cover your legs now. And the rest. Once you're across, the mainland rules apply again." She gestured at the small bag she carried, the one with my long skirt folded inside.
I looked down at myself. Crop top, shorts, the same outfit I had worn to arrive. I had been naked in front of Adam and the man at the administration desk. I had stood bare in a room full of people and let a camera record every line and curve of me. And yet, here, at the threshold of the ferry, in the sight of the grey smudge of the mainland, a strange stubbornness rose in me.
"No," I said. "I can handle shorts. I'm fine."
Lisa's brows lifted slightly, but she smiled. "Okay. I'm proud of you."
We boarded the ferry and found seats on the open deck, the wind pulling at my hair. The island shrank behind us, green and gold and blue, and I watched it go until it was just a shape in the water. Lisa sat beside me, her shoulder warm against mine, and neither of us spoke for a long while.
The mainland grew. I could make out the docks now, the cranes, the low grey buildings of the coastal city. And with every meter of water we crossed, something began to creep up my spine. The way I was sitting. The bareness of my arms. The short hem of my shorts, riding high on my thighs under the mainland sun.
A group of tourists stood at the railing nearby, talking loudly in a language I half-recognized. A man in a business shirt glanced at my legs, then away. The city smell reached me, diesel and concrete and coffee, and I felt my shoulders curl inward.
"Lisa," I said, my voice small.
She turned to me, and I saw understanding settle over her face before I even said another word. She reached into her bag and pulled out the long skirt, a soft floral thing that reached my ankles, and handed it to me.
"Here," she said. "No shame in it. You're not there yet. You'll get there."
I took the skirt and went to the small bathroom at the back of the deck. In the cramped space, I peeled off my shorts and pulled the skirt up over my hips, the fabric falling around my legs like a comfort blanket. I looked at myself in the smudged mirror. My chest was now covered by the soft fabric of Lisa's blouse, the needle marks hidden beneath its gentle folds. My legs were covered, my skin hidden, and I felt the shyness ease into something manageable.
I came back out and sat down next to Lisa. She didn't say anything, just reached over and squeezed my hand.
"Two months," she said. "Then we come back and finish it."
I looked out at the mainland, at the grey and the noise and the life I was leaving behind. The ferry horn sounded, low and long.
"Two months," I repeated. "And I'll be ready."
The ferry docked with a gentle bump, and the gangway clattered down. I stood, smoothing the long skirt over my thighs, and followed Lisa through the familiar streets of the coastal city. The buildings felt taller than I remembered, the noise sharper. A bus hissed past, and a street vendor called out in a language I had almost forgotten existed.
Lisa's apartment was exactly as we had left it. The same mismatched cushions on the sofa, the same stack of textbooks on the kitchen table, the same faint smell of the incense she burned sometimes. But I saw it differently now. The walls felt too close. The ceiling too low. I had spent two days in a place where the sky was everywhere, where the sea was a constant presence, and this box of rooms seemed to press against my skin.
"Shower first," Lisa said, already heading for the bathroom. "Then we talk."
The hot water was a shock after days of island sun. I stood under the spray and watched the salt and sand rinse from my skin, and when I stepped out and dried myself, I caught sight of my chest in the mirror. There it was. A faint firmness, a subtle swelling where before there had been nothing remarkable. My breasts were beginning to change.
I dressed in shorts and a loose tank top, and when I came out, Lisa had made tea. She sat cross-legged on the sofa, two mugs in front of her, and patted the cushion beside her.
"Sit."
I sat. The tea was herbal, warm and sweet, and I wrapped my hands around the mug like a lifeline.
"Two months," Lisa said. "That's not long. But it's long enough to get soft again, if you let it." She looked at me levelly. "You were good today. You made a choice and you followed through. But the mainland will try to undo that. It will whisper to you that you were crazy, that you should forget about it, that the island was a dream."
I nodded. I could already feel it, the city's gravity pulling at me, trying to make me small and covered and ordinary again.
"So we don't let it," Lisa said. "We practice."
"Practice?"
She set down her mug and turned to face me fully. "Starting tomorrow, you wear what I tell you to wear. Crop tops. shorts. Tube dresses. The kind of clothes that show your skin. You'll be uncomfortable at first. That's okay. The discomfort is the muscle you're building."
I felt my cheeks heat. "I have to go to class like that?"
"You have to go everywhere like that. The cafe. The library. The market. You're not hiding your body anymore, Emma. You're teaching it to be seen. You are not popular, so i believe you won't have to explain everyone why did you change your clothes. Also these are normal clothing in society. You took it abnormal because of your so called modest clothing habit. Don't worry. You can were shirt or jeans sometimes. But no head scarf or full cover clothes."
I opened my mouth to argue, but the words died. She was right. I had stood naked in front of strangers on the island and felt the shame bleed out of me with every passing hour. Two months of mainland modesty would undo all of that if I let it.
"Okay," I said. "I'll try."
Lisa smiled. "And we go to the beach. At least twice a week. Bikinis. The whole time. You'll learn what it feels like to have the sun on your skin and not care who's watching."
I gulped. "And the massages?"
Her smile softened. "I was getting to that. How do your breasts feel right now?"
I hadn't been paying attention until she asked, but the moment she did, I felt it. A deep, aching soreness, like the kind you get after a workout you didn't know you were doing. A tenderness that radiated from somewhere beneath the skin.
"Sore," I admitted. "They feel... heavy."
Lisa nodded. "That's the serum working. The tissue is expanding, the milk ducts are forming. It hurts at first. But if you massage them daily, it helps the process and keeps the tissue from hardening unevenly."
She shifted on the sofa, turning to face me, and reached for the hem of my tank top.
"Let me."
I swallowed. This was Lisa. My sister. I had seen her naked more times in the past two days than most people see their partners in a lifetime. But her hands on me felt different somehow.
"Yes," I said.
She pulled the tank top up and over my head, and I was bare from the waist up. The air touched my skin and my nipples tightened, the areolas pink and small and still ordinary. But the flesh beneath them felt different. Fuller. Heavier.
Lisa's hands came up and cupped them gently, her palms warm against the undersides. I flinched at the contact, a sharp pull of soreness, and she murmured, "Sorry. Just breathe."
She began to move her palms in slow circles, starting at the outer edge and working inward. The pressure was light at first, barely there, and the soreness was a dull ache that pulsed with each rotation. But as she continued, something else crept in. A warmth that didn't come from pain. The skin beneath her hands seemed to tingle, the blood rushing to the surface.
"This is normal," Lisa said, her voice low and steady. "The tissue needs the stimulation. It helps the milk channels form properly. You can do it yourself, but it's easier with someone else."
Her thumbs found the center of each breast and pressed gently, tracing small circles around my nipples. I gasped. The sensation was electric, a sudden jolt of pleasure that cut through the soreness like a wire.
"Good?" she asked.
I nodded, not trusting my voice.
She continued, her touch growing a little firmer now, working the flesh in kneading motions that loosened something deep inside me. My head fell back against the sofa cushion. My eyes drifted closed. The soreness was still there, a low throb beneath the surface, but the pleasure was starting to drown it out.
"You're filling out already," Lisa murmured. "I can feel it. The serum's working fast."
I opened my eyes and looked down. Her hands were still on me, her fingers sunk slightly into the flesh of my breasts. They looked different. Rounder. Heavier against my ribs. I could swear they had grown since the morning.
"Does it hurt a lot?" she asked.
"Not now." My voice came out huskier than I expected. "It feels... good when you do it."
She smiled, and there was something tender in her eyes. "Good. We'll do this every morning and every night. It'll keep the tissue soft and help the growth."
She gave my nipples a final gentle squeeze, and I shuddered, a ripple of sensation running through me that settled somewhere low in my belly. Then she withdrew her hands and reached for my tank top.
"Tomorrow," she said, handing it back, "we go shopping. I'm going to find you the shortest shorts you've ever worn. Kidding. We'll start with normal shorts. I don't want people give attention to your sudden change."
I took the tank top and pulled it over my head, my breasts still tingling from her touch. The soreness was already fading, replaced by a lingering warmth that felt almost like hunger.
"Okay," I said. "I trust you."
Lisa grinned. "That's the spirit, sis. Also, don't pull that tank top down. No clothes at home from now. Take that off. Your bottom too. Then let's make a list for the morning. I've got a plan, and it starts with a bikini so small you'll forget you're wearing anything at all." she smiled again.
I pulled the tank top over my head and let it drop to the floor. The shorts followed, and I stood in the middle of Lisa's living room wearing nothing at all. The air conditioning raised goosebumps on my arms and the skin of my thighs, and I felt the familiar urge to cross my arms over my chest. But Lisa was watching me with quiet approval, and so I let my hands hang at my sides.
"Better," she said. "Now. List."
We moved to the kitchen table, and she found a pen and a scrap of paper. I sat across from her, bare against the wooden chair, and tried not to think about how strange this was, how only a week ago I would have been mortified to be naked in front of anyone, let alone sitting in a kitchen making a shopping list.
""Bikini," she said, writing it down. "Two piece. I actually have an old set you can borrow for the first week. Green, tiny triangles that barely cover anything, and the bottoms sit low on your hips. You'll hate how exposed you feel. It's perfect."
I laughed despite myself. "Okay. But shouldn't we start with normal bikini?" "Deal." she said.
"Then clothes. Crop tops. Shorts. Skirts. Mini skirts. Loose shirts you can wear open over a bikini. Sandals. Sunglasses. Normal student clothes, but with skin showing. We're not doing anything extreme yet. Just normal clothes that don't hide you. Right, Gym. Another place to show figure. Sport's bra. Leggings."
I watched her write, her handwriting neat and small. The list grew. Sunscreen. A hat. A water bottle. A beach towel that wasn't mine, because mine was buried in a moving box somewhere.
"And that's it," she said, setting down the pen. "We'll get it all tomorrow."
I looked at the list. It was ordinary. A list of things anyone might buy. But I knew what it meant. Each item was a brick in the bridge I was building back to the island.
"Lisa," I said. "Thank you. For all of this. For showing me the island, for bringing me home, for not letting me chicken out."
She reached across the table and took my hand. "You're my sister, Emma. That's what we do."
We sat there for a long moment, hands linked across the worn wood of the table, my nakedness feeling less like exposure and more like trust. The city hummed outside the window, indifferent to the quiet transformation happening in this small apartment.
"Bed," Lisa said finally, releasing my hand and standing. "Big day tomorrow."
She hugged me at the door of the guest room, her arms warm around my bare back, her cheek pressed to my hair. "Good night, sis."
"Good night, Lisa."
I slipped into the guest room and closed the door. The bed was the same one I had slept in before the island, the sheets cool and familiar. I slid between them, naked, and felt the fabric against my skin, cool and smooth. For so long I had slept in pajamas, bundled and hidden. Now the air touched me everywhere, and it felt less like vulnerability and more like freedom.
My breasts ached faintly, a deep pulse that reminded me of the serum working its way through me. I pressed a palm to one experimentally, feeling the new firmness, the slight weight that hadn't been there before. In two months I would go back, and the H cups I had asked for would be settling in. I imagined it, the fullness, the heaviness, the way the island women moved with their bodies, unashamed, proud.
I closed my eyes. The city sounds drifted in through the window, distant traffic, a dog barking, the low murmur of a television from the apartment next door. But beneath it all, I could still hear the sea. The gentle lap of waves against the jetty. The cry of gulls. The wind through the palms.
Two months, I thought. And then a new life.
I fell asleep with a small smile on my face, my hand curled loosely over my breast, dreaming of the island and the woman I was becoming.
