Chapter 1: Introduction
The cafe was filled with the hum of conversations and the scent of brewing coffee. Kami sat at a corner table, his eyes hidden behind dark sunglasses. He pressed his fingers to the cool glass, feeling the condensation from his drink. Outside, the city bustled with life, its rhythm steady and comforting.
He felt a presence before he saw it. A shadow fell over the table, and he looked up. Nadia stood there, her dark eyes piercing through him. She was dressed in black, her hair cascading down her back like a waterfall.
"Kami," she said, her voice barely above a whisper, yet it commanded attention.
She slid into the seat across from him, her movements fluid and intentional.
He made no move to take off his sunglasses, a small defiance. "Nadia," he acknowledged, his voice calm yet guarded. "What brings you to this part of town?"
She leaned in, her elbows resting on the table. Her eyes never left his face, even though she couldn't see it clearly. "I could ask you the same thing, Kami. I didn't expect to find you here."
He took a sip of his coffee, buying time. "I could say the same about you, Nadia.
But I'm not the one who appeared out of nowhere." Kami set his cup down, his eyes still hidden.
Nadia smiled, slow and deliberate. "I'm always around, Kami. You just don't notice until it's too late." She paused, her fingers tracing the rim of his coffee cup. "Or until I want you to."
Kami felt a chill, despite the warmth of the cafe. "Is there something you wanted, Nadia? Or are you just here for the chat?"
She leaned back in her chair, her hands folding in her lap.
"I'm here because I know, Kami. I know about you and her."
Kami's grip tightened on his cup. He kept his voice low, steady. "And who might 'her' be, Nadia?"
Nadia's smile didn't waver. "Don't play coy, Kami. It doesn't suit you. I'm talking about Helen. I know about your little... indiscretions."
Kami set his cup down, his eyes still shielded. "Helen and I are... complicated, Nadia.
You know that."
Nadia's eyebrows rose slightly. "Complicated? Or convenient? You think I don't see how you look at other women? How you touch them, even when Helen is beside you?"
Kami's jaw clenched. "You're reading too much into casual interactions, Nadia."
She leaned in, her voice barely a whisper. "And you're underestimating me. I know, Kami. I know everything."
He met her stare, his eyes finally visible, a mix of defiance and fear.
"What do you want, Nadia?"
She sat back, her gaze never leaving his. "I want you to pay, Kami. For what you've done to her."
He scoffed, "Helen's a big girl. She can handle herself."
Nadia's eyes narrowed. "She's my friend, Kami. And you hurt her."
He shrugged, a nonchalant gesture. "People hurt each other all the time. It's the nature of relationships."
Nadia's lips curled into a smile, cold and calculated. "But not everyone gets caught, Kami.
And not everyone has a friend like me." Nadia leaned in, her voice low. "I want you to come with me. To a little... session. Call it therapy, if you will."
Kami raised an eyebrow, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Therapy? Nadia, I'm not the one who needs it."
She ignored his remark. "Tomorrow night, my place. Eight o'clock. Consider it... a punishment, for your actions."
Kami's smile faded, replaced by a hard stare. "And if I refuse?"
Nadia's smile didn't falter. "Then I'll tell Helen everything.
About the girls you've been with, the lies you've told. About the time you pretended to be working late when you were really with that redhead from your office. Remember her, Kami?"
Kami's hand tightened around his coffee cup. He looked at Nadia, her dark eyes reflecting his own fear. "You wouldn't."
"Try me," she said, her voice steady. "Or you can come to my place, tomorrow night. Face the consequences of your actions."
Kami let out a slow breath, his eyes never leaving Nadia's.
He knew she wasn't bluffing. His heart pounded in his chest, a mix of anger and fear. He had underestimated her, again.
"Fine," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "Tomorrow. Eight o'clock."
Nadia nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "I'll send you the address. And Kami?" She leaned in, her voice low. "Don't be late."
She stood up, her chair scraping against the floor. She turned to leave, her long hair swaying with the movement. Kami watched her go, his mind racing.
