Chapter 1: When the Tutorial Ends
Quentin adjusted his headset, the familiar weight comforting as he settled into his worn gaming chair. The triple monitor setup glowed, casting his pale face in an ethereal light, a stark contrast to the squalor of his cramped apartment. Empty energy drink cans formed a haphazard pyramid on his desk, a testament to the countless hours he’d poured into 'Realm of Might'. He knew every pixel of this world, every quest, every monster, every hidden secret. A decade. A decade spent honing his skills, mastering the arcane arts as Kael, the Stormblade Sorcerer, a digital avatar more real to him than his own reflection. He glanced at that reflection now, in the darkened screen of the turned-off fourth monitor. Scrawny, pale, perpetually tired. Kael was everything Quentin wasn't: powerful, respected, a hero.
Tonight was the night. The culmination of years of dedication, the final raid on the Obsidian Citadel, home to the tyrannical dragon, Vorlag. Quentin’s fingers danced across the keyboard, executing complex spell combinations with practiced ease. His guild, The Ironclad Legion, moved as a well-oiled machine, each member fulfilling their role with precision. He barked commands into the microphone, his voice a mix of excitement and nervous energy. "Tanks, hold the line! Healers, focus on Ragnar! Mages, burn phase in three… two… one!"
The battle raged, a chaotic ballet of spells, steel, and fire. Vorlag roared, a deafening sound that shook Quentin's headphones, and the dragon unleashed a torrent of flames, incinerating several of his guildmates. A pang of frustration shot through him. He’d explained this fight a thousand times. He took a swig of energy drink, the artificial sweetness doing little to calm his frayed nerves. He had spent weeks studying Vorlag's attack patterns, crafting the perfect strategy. Failure wasn't an option. Not after coming this far. "Ragnar, move left! You're standing in the fire!" Quentin yelled into the mic, his voice laced with impatience. Ragnar, bless his slow-witted soul, finally moved, narrowly avoiding another fiery blast. They were making progress, slowly but surely whittling down Vorlag's health. The dragon's scales shimmered, its eyes glowed with malevolent intent. Quentin felt a surge of adrenaline. He could almost taste victory.
Suddenly, the lights flickered, plunging his apartment into darkness. The monitors went black, the headset died, and silence descended, broken only by the hum of the refrigerator. "What the hell?" Quentin muttered, ripping off his headset. He fumbled for his phone, its flashlight beam cutting through the gloom. A power outage? Now? Of all the times. He stumbled to the window, peering out at the city lights. Everything seemed normal. No widespread blackout. Just him. He sighed, running a hand through his greasy hair. This had to be some kind of sick joke. He glanced back at his computer, a wave of disappointment washing over him. Years of work, potentially wasted because of a stupid power surge. He checked the breaker box, flipped the switch. Nothing. Still dark. Still silent.
As he turned back toward his desk, a blinding light erupted from his monitors, bathing the room in an eerie glow. Quentin shielded his eyes, a gasp escaping his lips. The air crackled with energy, the temperature dropping rapidly. He felt a strange pulling sensation, a force drawing him toward the screens. He reached out, a sense of morbid curiosity overriding his fear. The light intensified, swirling into a vortex of colors, and he saw not the familiar interface of 'Realm of Might', but a swirling landscape of forests and mountains. A guttural voice echoed in his mind, a voice that felt both alien and intimately familiar: *Kael… your realm needs you.* Then darkness. Complete and utter darkness.
