Chapter 1: Introduction
Under the cold, unforgiving gaze of the statue of Lenin, the public square in the heart of Moscow resonated with an eerie silence, as if the very stones were holding their breath. The sun dipped low in the sky, casting elongated shadows that danced macabrely on the cobblestones. Here, amid the echoes of history and the scent of old stone, justice was about to be served in a brutal, primal manner.
Jim was led through the square, his wrists bound behind his back with rough hemp rope.
The guards, clad in dark green uniforms adorned with insignia that gleamed in the fading light, marched him towards the center with a precision that spoke of countless rehearsals. He stumbled, the coarse cobblestones biting into his bare feet, and one of the guards, a tall man with close-cropped hair and a face that looked like it had been chiseled from granite, snarled something in Russian. Jim wasn't sure if it was a command or a curse, but he got the hint and quickened his pace.
As they reached the center, Jim could see the elaborate stage that had been set up.
A wooden platform, polished to a sheen, stood stark against the gray expanse of the square. Beside it, a crowd had gathered, their faces a mix of curiosity and anticipation. They whispered amongst themselves, their breaths misting in the cold air. He couldn't understand their words, but the tension in their voices was palpable.
The guard with the granite face, whom Jim assumed was Soldier Ivan, shoved him roughly towards the platform. Jim stumbled again, his bound hands preventing him from breaking his fall. He landed hard on the wooden surface, the impact jarring his bones.
"Up," the guard barked in English, his voice a low growl.
Jim struggled to his feet, his back protesting as he straightened. He could feel the eyes of the crowd on him, their gazes like physical touches, probing and invasive.
A man stepped onto the platform, his polished boots echoing against the wood. He was older than the other guards, his hair streaked with silver and his uniform adorned with enough medals to weigh him down. His face was a mask of stern disapproval, his eyes cold and hard as they raked over Jim. This had to be Captain Vladimir Ivanovich.
"James McAllister," the captain said, his voice deep and resonant, like distant thunder.
"You stand before us today as an example of what happens when one defies the Motherland." His words were punctuated by the crisp sound of his boots as he paced before Jim. "Your crime against the state is a grave one, and for that, you must be punished."
Jim swallowed hard, his mouth dry. He had expected this, of course. But anticipation did little to alleviate the fear that gripped him now.
"Today," the captain continued, "you will receive one hundred strokes of the cat-o'-nine-tails to be administered on your bare ass. You’ll receive weekly whippings and paddling for the rest of your life sentence.” Let it be a lesson to all who dare to cross the state."
Jim's stomach churned at the thought. He had heard stories about the cat-o'-nine-tails, the brutal implement designed to shred flesh and draw blood. He braced himself, trying to prepare for the inevitable pain.
The captain signaled to Soldier Ivan, who moved to stand behind Jim. Another soldier, this one with long hair tied back in a low ponytail, approached with a coiled length of rope. Soldier Alexei, Jim presumed.
Alexei looped the rope around Jim's wrists, securing them to a hook suspended from the ceiling. Jim's arms were raised above his head, stretching his body taut, the rope biting into his skin. Soldier Ivan stepped back, his eyes cold and unyielding as he assessed his work.
"You look uncomfortable, comrade," Captain Vladimir remarked, his voice laced with cruel amusement. "But then again, this position is not meant for comfort."
Jim glared at the captain, his muscles tense. "Fuck you," he spat, the words tearing from his throat.
The captain's lips curled into a sneer. "Very well, comrade. Let us begin."
Soldier Ivan stepped forward, a leather paddle in his hand. The sound of the crowd's anticipation rose, a low, hungry murmur. Ivan looked at Jim, his eyes gleaming with a twisted sort of pleasure. "You ready for this, American?" he asked, his English heavily accented.
Jim gritted his teeth, refusing to give him the satisfaction of a response.
Ivan smirked, then raised the paddle and brought it down hard on Jim's ass.
The crack of leather on flesh echoed through the square, and Jim bit back a scream. The pain was searing, intense, like a branding iron. The crowd gasped, their breaths fogging in the cold air.
"One," Ivan said, his voice flat. He raised the paddle again, and Jim tensed, bracing for the next blow.
The crowd watched, their faces a mix of horror and fascination. Some of the men in the crowd looked almost eager, their eyes gleaming with a dark excitement. Jim could feel their gaze, heavy and intrusive, as though they were touching him.
The cold air on his exposed skin did nothing to dampen the heat that rose in his cheeks, a mix of humiliation and anger. Each blow from the paddle was accompanied by a count from Ivan, his voice as unyielding as the implement he wielded.
At the twentieth strike, Jim's body was on fire. The pain was overwhelming, a wild beast that clawed at him from the inside. He gritted his teeth, refusing to give them the satisfaction of a sound, but his body betrayed him. Sweat dripped from his brow, his muscles trembling with the effort to remain silent.
But the pain was becoming unbearable, a white-hot inferno that consumed him. He couldn't hold back the grunts any longer, each one a testament to his suffering.
Captain Vladimir stared at him, his eyes gleaming with a strange intensity. "Come now, McAllister," he said, his voice a low rumble. "You Americans are known for your toughness. Surely you can take more than this."
Jim glared at him, his heart pounding in his chest. "Fuck you," he growled, though the words came out more like a ragged pant.
