Chapter 1: Introduction

Julie entered the dimly lit corridor of the office building, clutching her small leather briefcase filled with pens, notepads, and other essential items needed for her first day as a secretary. Nervousness mixed with excitement coursed through her veins, making her heart beat faster than usual. She couldn't help but think about how much more independent she would become once she landed this job, leaving her family home far behind.

The fluorescent lights above flickered erratically, casting eerie shadows across the empty hallways.

She really needed this job to help pay some of the bills as she moved into an apartment recently with her boy friend.

This was supposed to be a fresh start for both of them; they could finally live independently without having to worry about rent money constantly coming out of their pockets. It seemed like such a fantastic idea back then, but now the reality had set in. The pressure mounted upon her shoulders, causing a tight knot of anxiety beneath her breastbone. But she knew she could do this—she just needed time to adjust. And so, Julie steeled herself against the nerves and pushed forward.

Suddenly, she noticed something odd about the walls lining the hallway.

They were painted with a peculiar, almost undetectable pattern. She stopped dead in her tracks, craning her neck to get a better look. With each step she took towards the source of these unusual designs, her breath quickened and goosebumps formed along her arms. Unbeknownst to her, she stumbled upon an old storeroom hidden behind an ordinary door disguised as wall paneling.

As she tentatively opened the door, Julie felt an electric charge surge through her veins. There was no turning back now; curiosity compelled her to explore further.

Pushing open the creaky door, Julie found herself standing amidst dusty boxes stacked high upon wooden shelves reaching up to the ceiling. The room smelt musty yet strangely alluring, eliciting an air of mystery and adventure. Gingerly stepping over a pile of discarded paperwork, she tiptoed around ancient filing cabinets.

Despite the chilling darkness, she felt drawn to continue exploring.

Everywhere she looked, there were remnants of forgotten files, dusty bottles of perfume, and worn photographs of employees who might well have been forgotten too. Tapping her foot nervously, Julie hesitated before opening another closed door marked "Private". She thought it best to leave this place, yet the lingering thrill of discovery wouldn't let her turn away. Slowly, ever so slowly, she lifted the rusted metal handle, gripped it tightly. Then, with a steady resolve, she swung the door wide open.

Julie thought it would be best to get to her new desk so she could relieve her coworker of their position, even if this did seem weird..

Walking down the hall, past the various offices adorned with framed diplomas and professional awards, Julie found her way to Room 117 - a space reserved specifically for her duties as a secretary. Upon entering, she saw a neat desk covered with stationery supplies, a computer monitor connected to a desktop PC, and two comfortable chairs facing each other. This room appeared organized, tidy, and full of potential opportunities for personal growth.

Yet, something else caught Julie’s attention right away. Embedded within the fabric of the room’s decor lay multiple pictures and certificates showcasing women from diverse backgrounds holding positions of authority throughout the company. This intrigued her as she hadn't encountered any female executives in the business world previously.

She also glanced to see the very…. Well endowed black woman sitting at the desk typing on her cell phone and ignoring her. “Hello, you must be tonya, I’m Julie” she said extending her hand out to shake.

“Yes,” Tonya replied coolly, setting aside her cellphone on the desk. “I’m Tonya.”

There was an awkward silence between them as Julie waited patiently for Tonya to break the ice. Tonya, however, continued to ignore her, focusing instead on her laptop screen. Eventually, feeling ignored, Julie decided to introduce herself again.

"So," Julie began hesitantly, trying to initiate conversation.

Despite the lack of warmth in Tonya's demeanor, Julie pressed on, attempting to make amends. She started talking animatedly about her hopes for the future, discussing her aspirations related to advancing professionally within the organization. However, it soon became evident that her attempts to connect with Tonya fell flat. Tonya remained aloof, maintaining minimal eye contact while replying with monosyllabic responses. Disheartened, Julie tried again, asking questions about the work environment and the specific tasks assigned to Tonya.

Yet, still receiving only perfunctory answers, Julie struggled to understand why Tonya was being so dismissive. Feeling somewhat excluded, Julie grappled with her own insecurities. Maybe it wasn't her but rather Tonya, who simply didn't care enough about getting to know others? Was she dealing with prejudice because of her gender or her naivety regarding certain aspects of the corporate culture? These questions troubled Julie deeply.

The clock struck eight o'clock sharp, marking the beginning of the morning shift.

After exchanging a few terse goodbyes, Julie watched as Tonya walked off briskly toward the exit, head held high and shoulders squared. Alone once more, Julie returned to her desk to begin organizing her newly acquired responsibilities. Piles of documents sat waiting to be filed meticulously, folders needing labeling required precise categorization, and important calls awaited scheduling. The monotonous hum of the air conditioner provided an underlying rhythm to her day, occasionally interrupted by soft keyboard clicks emanating from neighboring cubicles.

Focused on her task, Julie worked diligently, navigating her way through complex procedures, administrative challenges, and interpersonal obstacles with growing confidence. As time passed, she grew accustomed to the rigid structure of her new routine, adapting to the quirks and eccentricities of those around her. Despite occasional encounters with co-workers displaying varying degrees of hostility or indifference, Julie persisted in her efforts to prove herself as a valuable asset to the team.

Although isolated incidents left her questioning whether she truly belonged here, she refused to allow negative experiences to deter her dedication to succeeding in her role. Instead, she sought solace in her achievements, reassured by the knowledge that her performance spoke volumes.

In time, Julie learned to navigate the labyrinthine network of colleagues and managers scattered throughout the department. Each encounter offered insights into the nuances of interpersonal dynamics, helping her develop skills crucial for effective communication. As she grew more comfortable in her work life so too did her personal relationship with her boy friend. Every thing seemed to be working out for her.

However, little did she know, there was more going on inside the office building than what initially met the eye.
