Bartender Kellan Mercer survives Chicago by remaining invisible, guarding the secrets behind his carefully ordinary life. Then Jasper Barbieri enters The Velvet Lounge and fixes him with the attention of a man accustomed to owning whatever he desires. Their dangerous attraction draws Kellan toward the ruthless heir of a powerful crime family, where intimacy is tangled with control, violence, and suspicion. As Jasper’s fixation deepens and buried truths threaten to surface, Kellan must decide whether the magnetic stranger offers protection, captivity, or both—and whether desire can survive in a world where trust is a fatal weakness.

Chapter 1: A Predator at the Bar

The clinking of ice against crystal was Kellan’s metronome, each chime a steady beat in the symphony of The Velvet Lounge. Friday night. The air, thick with expensive perfume and the low thrum of jazz, vibrated against Kellan’s skin. He wiped down the already spotless mahogany bar, a practiced move that barely registered in his mind. He knew this place like the back of his hand: the regulars nursing their usuals, the tourists wide-eyed with manufactured awe, the hushed corners where deals were made and secrets whispered. Kellan was a ghost, a silent observer in a world of excess. It was safer that way.

He glanced up, his gaze sweeping across the room, a habit honed over years of self-preservation. That's when he saw him. Jasper Barbieri. Even from across the room, the man radiated power. He moved with a predatory grace, every gesture deliberate, every glance carrying a weight that Kellan could feel in his chest. He was dressed impeccably, a dark suit that seemed tailored to perfection, emphasizing the breadth of his shoulders and the lean line of his torso. Kellan knew the name, everyone in Chicago did. The Barbieris weren’t exactly subtle.

Kellan told himself to look away, to focus on the martini he was mixing, three olives, extra dry. But his eyes kept drifting back, drawn by an invisible force he couldn’t name. Jasper was talking to someone, his head inclined, his expression unreadable. Then, as if sensing Kellan’s gaze, he looked up. Their eyes met. It was only a moment, a fleeting connection in a crowded room, but it felt like a jolt of electricity. Jasper’s lips curved into a slow, knowing smile, a promise of something dangerous and forbidden. Kellan’s breath hitched. He looked down, busying himself with the shaker, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had to get a grip. He couldn't afford to get noticed, not by someone like Jasper Barbieri.

"Whiskey, neat." The voice was deep, a low rumble that vibrated through Kellan. He looked up again, and Jasper was there, standing at the bar, his dark eyes fixed on Kellan’s face. Too close. Way too close. "Rough night," Kellan said, forcing a casual tone he didn’t feel. He reached for a glass, his hands trembling slightly. He cursed himself for his lack of composure. Jasper just watched him, that unnerving smile still playing on his lips. "Is it?" he asked, his voice a silken threat. "Or is it just getting started?" Kellan poured the whiskey, trying to ignore the way Jasper’s eyes lingered on his. He slid the glass across the bar. "That'll be twenty dollars." Jasper didn’t reach for his wallet. Instead, he leaned closer, his arm brushing against Kellan’s. A spark. "Put it on my tab," he murmured, his breath warm against Kellan’s ear. "I have a feeling I'll be running it up tonight." Kellan swallowed hard. He knew he should walk away, tell him he was off the clock, disappear into the anonymity he’d worked so hard to cultivate. But something held him back, a dangerous curiosity, a reckless desire to see where this could lead. "What makes you so sure?" Kellan asked, the words a breathless whisper. Jasper’s smile widened. "Because, Kellan," he said, his voice a low purr, "I always get what I want."
