Chapter 2: Dawn of the Thick
The locker room door slammed behind Chad with a hollow boom that echoed in the pre-dawn silence, louder than intended. He’d barely slept, replaying yesterday’s humiliation – Brody’s smirk, the deliberate unzip, the stunned silence that followed his own brag. His pride still stung, raw and pulsing. He needed to reclaim something. Now.
The air hit him, thick and damp, smelling of chlorine from the nearby pool, stale sweat soaked into the grout between tiles, and the sharp bite of cheap disinfectant used to mop the floor. Overhead fluorescents buzzed, casting harsh light on the rows of battered blue lockers. Steam curled from the shower area, ghostly fingers reaching into the main space. It was 5:30 AM. He thought he’d be first. He’d needed to be first.
But a rhythmic thump-thump-thump echoed from the free weights section beyond the locker room archway. Chad’s jaw tightened. He knew that sound: plates shifting slightly on the pull-up bar. He edged forward, the rubber soles of his trainers squeaking softly on the damp concrete floor.
There he was.
Brody. Suspended from the pull-up bar, a heavy chain draped around his waist with at least two 45-pound plates dangling beneath him. He wasn’t just doing pull-ups; he was owning them. Each rep was a slow, controlled arc. Up, chin clearing the bar with room to spare, a hard contraction in his lats that made the muscles ripple under his damp grey tank top. Down, a deliberate, muscle-burning descent that spoke of brutal control.
Chad watched, frozen just inside the archway. Brody’s back was turned, his focus absolute. Sweat darkened the fabric across his broad shoulders and traced a path down his spine. But Chad’s gaze, almost against his will, dropped lower. Brody’s worn navy gym shorts were stretched taut across the powerful swell of his glutes and the thick, defined mass of his thighs. The fabric strained where it met his crotch, outlining an undeniable, heavy bulge that bounced slightly with each powerful pull. The image from yesterday slammed back – the deliberate reveal, the confident smirk. Heat flooded Chad’s face, a mix of anger and something else, something unsettlingly primal.
Brody finished the set, lowering himself smoothly, the plates hitting the floor with a final, resonant clank. He unhooked the chain, letting it fall with a heavier thud, then grabbed his towel, wiping his face and neck. Only then did he turn, spotting Chad. A slow, knowing smile spread across his face, crinkling the corners of his eyes. Not cocky. Just… aware.
"Early bird," Brody stated, his voice a low rumble, slightly breathless. He took a long swig from his water bottle, condensation dripping down the sides.
Chad forced himself to move, striding towards the squat racks, trying to project nonchalance he didn’t feel. "Could say the same about you. Couldn’t sleep after your big win yesterday?" The words came out sharper than intended.
Brody chuckled, a low, dry sound. He dropped his towel on a nearby bench and walked over to the squat rack Chad was approaching. "Just keeping the momentum going. Leg day." He patted the thick muscle of one quad. "Foundation stuff." He loaded a barbell with startling speed – plates sliding on with a metallic shunk-shunk-shunk – until it held significantly more weight than Chad typically handled. 315 pounds? Maybe more.
Chad watched, his competitive fire flaring hot. "Think you’re the only one who can handle heavy?" He started grabbing plates for the adjacent rack, aiming high. Too high. He needed to match, to exceed.
Brody just raised an eyebrow, stepping under the loaded bar. He settled it across the meaty shelf of his upper back, not his neck. Hands gripped wide. Feet planted firmly, shoulder-width apart. He took three deep, audible breaths, inflating his chest, bracing his core like tightening a steel cable. Then he descended.
It wasn’t fast. It was a deliberate, grinding descent, thighs spreading wide as he dropped below parallel, his hamstrings flattening against his calves. The controlled power was terrifying. He paused for a split second at the bottom, the weight immense, then drove up explosively through his heels, quads and glutes erupting with thick veins as they propelled the bar skyward. He locked out, exhaling sharply. One rep. Pure, brutal power.
Chad stared, frozen mid-way through loading his own bar. The weight suddenly felt ludicrous. Impossible. Brody’s sheer leg strength was a different league. It wasn't just the weight; it was the way he moved it. Effortless control, devastating power concentrated in those thick, sculpted tree trunks. The earlier image of the bulge in his shorts was replaced by the terrifying efficiency of his legs. A cold knot of inadequacy tightened in Chad’s gut.
Brody re-racked the bar with a loud clang. He wiped sweat from his forehead with the back of his wrist, breathing heavily but steadily. He glanced at Chad’s half-loaded bar, then met Chad’s eyes. His expression was unreadable for a moment, then that faint, infuriatingly knowing smile returned.
"Your turn," Brody said quietly, stepping back from the rack. He didn’t move away. He stood nearby, leaning casually against the rack’s upright, watching. Waiting. Not mocking, just… observing. His presence was a tangible pressure, a silent challenge hanging thick in the steamy, metallic-smelling air.
Chad looked at the heavy plates he’d stacked. His biceps, pumped from yesterday’s arm day, felt suddenly insignificant. His chest felt tight. The bar seemed impossibly wide, the weights like anchors. He stepped forward, the rubber soles of his shoes whispering on the floor. He ducked under the bar, feeling its cold, knurled steel press against the back of his shoulders. He gripped it, knuckles whitening. He sucked in a breath, trying to mimic Brody’s pre-lift ritual. But his core felt shaky. His legs felt thin. The silent, watchful presence beside him was a crushing weight all its own.
He began the descent.
