Chapter 1: Introduction
The night was her friend, her confidant, her lover. It was in the hushed silence of darkness that Catburgular felt most alive. The city, with its pulsating heart and neon veins, was her playground, and she was the master of her domain. Tonight, she had her sights set on a particular prize: a diamond necklace worth more than most people dared to dream of.
She moved with the stealth of a shadow, her black cat suit blending seamlessly with the night. Her dark eyes, keen and alert, scanned the apartment she had just infiltrated. Everything was as it should be.
The apartment was silent, the high-end alarm system deactivated with a flick of her wrist and a few expertly placed tools. She knew the layout like the back of her hand, having studied the blueprints for weeks. The sleek, modern design of the place was more than just aesthetically pleasing; it was functional. Everything had its place, and everything was accounted for. Except for one thing.
Catburgular paused, her brow furrowing as she noticed a slight irregularity in the otherwise pristine hardwood floor. She crouched down, her gloved hand reaching out to touch the offending object.
It was a glue trap, the kind that was supposed to catch rodents but often ended up causing more harm than good. She huffed out a breath, a mix of irritation and respect for the homeowner's ingenuity. It seemed they had done their research.
Catburgular was about to stand up and circumvent the trap when she heard a soft, familiar purring sound. She froze, her heart pounding in her chest. It was too late. Her foot was already stuck in the glue trap, her cat suit adhering to the sticky surface with an audible squelch.
She cursed under her breath, trying to remain still and silent. The purring sound stopped abruptly, replaced by the soft pad of footsteps approaching her location. She couldn't see who was coming, but she could sense their presence, a palpable shift in the atmosphere.
Suddenly, a voice pierced the darkness, low and amused. "Well, well, well. What do we have here?"
Catburgular's heart raced, but she kept her cool. "Just a stray cat," she replied, her voice a low purr.
