Chapter 1: The First Drink That Wasn’t Free

The problem with velvet ropes was they couldn’t actually stop anyone; they were a suggestion. Maya stood behind one, hating the cold through her thin jacket. Arthur gave the doorman a nod that was one part greeting, two parts dismissal. Inside, the speakeasy swallowed them. It wasn’t noise, but a thick, murmuring quiet broken by ice clinking against crystal. Arthur’s hand, a warm pressure on the small of her back, guided her past shadowy booths where half-seen figures leaned close. “I like this table,” he said. His voice was so low it hummed in the air between them.

He’d already pulled out her chair. It was leather, worn smooth, and it sighed under her weight. She’d Googled him earlier. The results were sterile: board positions, charitable foundations, a home featured in Architectural Digest. None of that was here now. What he ordered for them arrived in wide-mouthed glasses he called 'glencairns'. His fingers brushed hers when he passed her the drink, a studied intimacy he held a beat too long. The peaty burn tasted faintly of smoke and bandages, drowning her cough.

He didn’t immediately speak. He just watched her, the way you might watch a gauge after tightening a bolt. Maya shifted, her words sticking in her throat. "$5,874," she finally offered, the number shocking her with how easily it fell out. It was the exact amount. Such a stupidly honest anchor to throw into all this calculated quiet.

Arthur swirled his whisky, creating a tiny, amber vortex. “For promising minds,” he said, his tone wrapping the tuition in a future, “it’s a bargain. Many things in life are investments, Maya.” He paused then, his fingertip tracing a slow oval on the table’s veneer between them. “Consider your position another speculative asset, simply needing the right backer.”

He leaned back, the leather of his own chair groaning. His smile was brief, a crack in a polished surface, promising nothing but forwarding a list of possibilities. He measured the heavy silence stretching after her nod, and relished his careful preparation.

The borrowed seduction of the location took its toll on Maya’s wary outlook, laying her doubts temporarily on their sides until, again perceiving Arthur’s closeness as he slid within reach, she was vigilant. He moved deliberately forward with another calculated act of pressuring intimacy; voice a newly conspiratorial murmur cancelling the remaining distance between them across the murmur-filled room.

"I take… personal interest… in my ventures."
