A steamy (literally) love story about two friends who went into a sauna together as friends and left as lovers. In the sauna, the heat helped them to reveal their true feelings and now it’s their favourite hangout

Chapter 1: Introduction

The steam enveloped us like a warm, wet blanket, clinging to our skin and making every breath feel like a kiss from the air itself. Max and I had been friends for what felt like forever, sharing everything from our favorite movies to our deepest fears. We were two peas in a pod, the dynamic duo, the best of friends.

"So, how's work been?" I asked, leaning back against the cedar wall, my eyes closed against the heat. The sauna was our little escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, a place where we could unwind and catch up without the world interrupting.

Max's house was our sanctuary, and the sauna was its heart, a small, windowless room that held our secrets and laughter.

Max chuckled, his voice a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the steam. "You know, the usual. Meetings, deadlines, clients who think they know more than they do." He was a graphic designer, his hands as skilled with a mouse as they were with a paintbrush. I could picture him now, his brow furrowed in concentration, his blue eyes locked onto the screen, his fingers dancing on the keys.

"And you?" he asked, turning the conversation back to me.

"How's the art world treating you? Still selling those stunning landscapes?"

I opened my eyes, a small smile playing on my lips. "Oh, you know, the usual. Clients who want to buy the same sunset over and over again, and galleries that think they can price my work like it's a commodity."

Max laughed, a sound that was as warm and comforting as the steam around us. "Well, at least you're not dealing with clients who think they can design their own logos."

I chuckled, shaking my head. "No, but I do have to deal with people who think they can tell me how to paint."

Max leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees.

"You know, Sophie, sometimes I think we should just pack it all in. Quit our jobs, sell our stuff, and just... travel. See the world, paint the sunset from every corner of the globe."

I smiled, the idea sending a thrill through me. "That sounds amazing, Max. But who would run your business? And who would buy all my paintings?"

He waved a hand dismissively. "We'd figure it out. We always do. Besides, think of the stories we'd have.

He waved a hand dismissively. "We'd figure it out. We always do. Besides, think of the stories we'd have.

The sunsets we'd chase, the cultures we'd immerse ourselves in, the food we'd eat." Max's eyes sparkled with excitement, and I could almost see the world he was painting with his words.

I laughed, "You make it sound so easy, Max. Just pick up and go."

He shrugged, "Why not? Life's too short to be stuck in an office all day, don't you think?"

I sighed, leaning back against the wall again. "I do. I just... I don't know. I have responsibilities, you know? A gallery to run, clients to please."

Max was silent for a moment, then he said, "You know what you need? A break.

That's what you need, Sophie. A real break, not just a night out or a weekend away. Something that'll make you forget about deadlines and clients and all the other bullshit that's been weighing you down."

I raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing on my lips. "And what, Max, do you propose I do? Go on a solo retreat to some yoga ashram?"

He laughed, a sound that echoed through the small room, bouncing off the wooden panels and filling the space with warmth. "No, no. Nothing like that. I was thinking more along the lines of... a road trip."

I sat up straight, my interest piqued. "A road trip?

Max, you're crazy," I said, but the idea was already starting to take root in my mind. The thought of leaving behind the city, the noise, the constant buzz of my phone, was suddenly incredibly appealing.

Max grinned, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "Crazy or not, it's a good idea. We could start in Portland, hit the coast, maybe stop in Seattle, then head down to San Francisco. We could paint, we could eat, we could just... live."

I laughed, shaking my head. "You make it sound so simple. But what about work? What about our lives here?"

Max shrugged, his shoulders glistening with sweat. "We'll figure it out.

We always do," Max said, his voice steady and sure. "Besides, think about it, Sophie. When's the last time we just... lived? When's the last time we did something spontaneous, something just for us?"

I bit my lip, considering his words. The thought of leaving behind the familiar, the safe, was both terrifying and exhilarating. I could feel the heat of the sauna, the steam wrapping around me like a lover's embrace, and I found myself wanting to embrace the unknown, to let go of the reins and see where life took me.

Max must have seen the indecision in my eyes, because he leaned forward, his voice softening.

"Look, Sophie, I'm not saying we have to leave tomorrow. But... think about it, okay? Just promise me you'll think about it."

I took a deep breath, the steam filling my lungs, and nodded. "Okay, Max. I'll think about it."

He grinned, leaning back against the wall, his eyes closing. "That's all I ask."

We sat in comfortable silence for a moment, the only sound the occasional crackle of the sauna's heater. I let my mind wander, imagining the open road, the changing landscapes, the freedom. It was a tempting thought, and I found myself wanting to give in to it.

But there was a part of me that was still holding back, still clinging to the safety of my routine. I looked over at Max, his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling with each breath. He looked so peaceful, so content. It was a stark contrast to the way I felt, my mind a whirlwind of thoughts and doubts.

"Max," I said, my voice barely above a whisper. "What if we can't go back? What if we leave and never come back?"

Max opened his eyes, his gaze meeting mine. "Then we won't," he said simply. "But isn't that the point?

To live without regrets, without wondering what if?" Max's voice was soft, yet firm, his eyes holding a depth of understanding that made my heart flutter. I looked away, unable to hold his gaze, and instead focused on the steam dancing in the air between us.

"Regrets are a part of life, Max. They're what make us who we are," I countered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the sauna.

"Maybe," he replied, his voice thoughtful. "But they shouldn't define us. They shouldn't hold us back."

I sighed, running a hand through my damp hair. "I know. I'm scared, Max.

I'm scared of letting go, of stepping out of my comfort zone. What if I fail? What if I can't paint like I used to? What if I'm just... not enough?

Max's eyes softened, and he reached out, his hand resting gently on my knee. "Sophie, you're enough. You're more than enough. And you're not going to fail. You're going to paint, and you're going to live, and you're going to love every minute of it."

His touch sent a shiver down my spine, and I looked up at him, my heart pounding in my chest.

The heat of the sauna seemed to intensify, the air thick with an undercurrent of tension that I couldn't quite place. Max's eyes were locked onto mine, his hand still resting on my knee, his thumb tracing small circles on my skin.

"Max," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the sauna. "What are you doing?"

He didn't answer, instead he leaned in, his face inches from mine. I could feel his breath on my skin, warm and inviting. His eyes were a deep blue, like the sky on a clear summer day, and I found myself getting lost in them.

"You're thinking too much, Sophie," he murmured, his voice low and husky.

"Just... feel."

And I did. I felt the heat of the sauna, the dampness of the air, the weight of Max's hand on my knee. I felt the way my heart was pounding in my chest, the way my breath was coming in short, sharp gasps. I felt the way my body was responding to his, the way my skin was tingling with anticipation.

Max leaned in closer, his lips brushing against my ear. "You know, I've been wanting to do this for a long time," he whispered.

I swallowed hard, my mind racing. "Do what?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

He pulled back, his eyes meeting mine.

"This," he said, his thumb still tracing lazy circles on my knee. "I've been wanting to do this for a long time."

I felt a rush of heat to my cheeks, my heart pounding in my chest. "We can't. We're friends. We've always been just friends."

He nodded, his eyes never leaving mine. And I'm not saying we have to change that. But... I can't deny it anymore, Sophie. I want you. And I think you want me too."

I looked away, my eyes scanning the wooden walls of the sauna, the steam swirling around us.

My heart was pounding in my chest, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps. I could feel the heat of the sauna, the dampness of the air, and the weight of Max's hand on my knee.

"Sophie," Max said, his voice soft and gentle. "Look at me."

I hesitated for a moment, then turned my gaze back to him. His eyes were filled with a mix of desire and uncertainty, and I found myself wanting to reach out, to touch him, to feel his skin against mine.

"I can't," I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the sauna. "I can't just...

I can't just... kiss you, Max. We've always been just friends," I stammered, my voice betraying the turmoil inside me. My heart was screaming yes, but my mind was stuck in a loop of doubt and fear.

Max's hand on my knee stilled, and he leaned back, his eyes never leaving mine. "I know, Sophie. I know we've always been just friends. But sometimes... sometimes things change. Feelings change. And I can't ignore this anymore. I can't ignore the way I feel about you."

I swallowed hard, my eyes flicking between his.

"Max, I... I'm scared. I don't want to ruin our friendship. I don't want to lose you."

He nodded, his expression softening. I know. And I don't want to lose you either. But... sometimes, things are worth the risk. Sometimes, the fear is worth it if it means we get to experience something truly special."

I looked away, my gaze falling to the steam swirling around us. "But what if it doesn't work out? What if we try this and it doesn't feel right? What then?"

Max's hand moved from my knee, his fingers tracing a line up my arm, sending shivers down my spine.

"Sophie," he said, his voice barely above a whisper, "we don't have to rush into anything. We can take this slow, see where it goes. But I can't keep pretending I don't feel this way about you. I can't keep ignoring the way my heart races when you're near, the way my breath hitches when you smile at me."

His words sent a warmth spreading through me, and I found myself leaning into his touch, my eyes locked onto his. I don't know what to say. I've never... I've never felt this way about you before. I mean, I care about you, deeply, but... this is new. This is...

confusing," I admitted, my voice barely above a whisper. The steam seemed to thicken around us, the heat of the sauna intensifying, mirroring the warmth spreading through my body.

Max's thumb continued its gentle path up my arm, sending shivers down my spine. "I know it is, Sophie. But sometimes, the best things in life are confusing at first. They're the things that make us question, that make us think, that make us feel."

I took a deep breath, the steam filling my lungs, and looked into Max's eyes. They were a deep blue, like the ocean on a stormy day, and I found myself getting lost in them. "But what if it's a mistake?

What if we ruin everything?" I asked, my voice barely audible over the hum of the sauna. The fear of losing Max, of ruining our friendship, was a heavy weight in my stomach, but so was the desire that was building with each passing moment.

Max's hand reached my shoulder, his thumb gently caressing my collarbone. "Sophie, look at me," he said softly. I hesitated for a moment before turning my gaze back to him. His eyes were filled with a warmth and sincerity that made my heart flutter. "We've been friends for a long time. We've shared everything, supported each other through thick and thin. Don't you think we can handle this?

Don't you think we're strong enough to navigate whatever comes our way?" Max's voice was steady, his eyes holding mine with an intensity that made me feel both vulnerable and empowered.

I took a deep breath, the steam swirling around us, and tried to find the words to express the whirlwind of emotions inside me. "I... I don't know, Max. I don't want to mess things up.

Max's hand moved from my shoulder to my cheek, his thumb gently brushing away a bead of sweat that had formed on my skin. "You won't lose me, Sophie. We're in this together, remember?

We've been through so much, and we've always come out stronger on the other side. This is no different. We'll figure it out, just like we always do."

His words were a balm to my frayed nerves, and I found myself leaning into his touch, my eyes never leaving his. Max's hand was still on my cheek, his thumb tracing gentle circles on my skin, and I found myself wanting to close my eyes and just feel.

"But what if it's too much?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the hum of the sauna.

"What if it's too much? What if we can't handle it?"

Max's hand moved from my cheek to my neck, his fingers gently massaging the tension that had built up there. "Then we'll deal with it together, Sophie. We've always faced our challenges head-on, and this is no different. We'll talk, we'll listen, we'll support each other. That's what friends do, right?"

I nodded, my eyes fluttering closed as Max's touch sent waves of pleasure coursing through me. "Right," I whispered, my voice barely audible.

Max's fingers continued their gentle exploration, moving from my neck to my collarbone, then down to my shoulder.

I could feel the heat of his touch, the electricity that seemed to spark wherever his skin met mine. I took a deep breath, the steam filling my lungs, and opened my eyes to find Max watching me, his gaze intense and focused.

"You're overthinking, Sophie," he murmured, his voice low and husky.

I nodded, my eyes never leaving his, and let myself get lost in the sensation of his touch. His fingers traced a path down my arm, leaving a trail of goosebumps in their wake. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, my breath coming in short, sharp gasps.

Max's touch was igniting a fire within me, a hunger that I had never felt before. I wanted him, I realized, with a suddenness that took my breath away. I wanted him more than I had ever wanted anything in my life. I want you."

He looked at me, his eyes dark with desire. "Are you sure, Sophie? We don't have to rush this. We can take it slow."

I shook my head, my eyes never leaving his. "I don't want to take it slow, Max. Now."

He didn't need to be told twice.

He leaned in, his lips finding mine in a hungry, desperate kiss. I could taste the salt of his skin, the heat of his breath, and I found myself melting into him, my body pressing against his. His hands moved from my shoulders to my back, his fingers tracing the curve of my spine, sending shivers down my body.

I moaned into his mouth, my hands reaching up to tangle in his hair. He growled against my lips, his tongue exploring my mouth with a ferocity that made my knees weak. I could feel the heat of his body, the hardness of his muscles, and I wanted more. I wanted all of him.

I wanted to feel his skin against mine, to taste him, to explore every inch of his body. I pulled away from his kiss, my breath coming in ragged gasps, and looked into his eyes. They were dark with desire, his pupils dilated, and I could see the hunger reflected in them. I reached up, my fingers tracing the line of his jaw, feeling the rough stubble that had grown in the hours since we had last seen each other.

Max's hands were still on my back, his thumbs tracing circles on my skin, sending shivers down my spine. I could feel the heat of his body, the hardness of his muscles, and I wanted to feel more. I wanted to feel everything.
