Chapter 1: Introduction
Govi and Natalie had known each other since undergrad. They had shared the same circles, partied together, laughed together, studied together, and occasionally fantasized about each other. But life had pushed them apart, pulling them in different directions, both professionally and personally.
Years had passed before fate reunited them at a dimly lit bar, located at the edge of Chinatown. The scent of exotic spices filled the air, and a mellifluous melody wafted softly from musicians gathered nearby.
Govi and Natalie, both enrobed in soft evening wear, found themselves perched on a worn wooden bench nestled against the bar itself. Their faces were illuminated by the soft glow of neon lights overhead, casting shadows across their features.
Natalie gazed into Govi's eyes, feeling an unfamiliar longing stir within her. She thought back to those long-ago days when he would tease her, their laughter filling the halls of their alma mater. Her heart fluttered like a trapped bird, and she hesitated only momentarily before reaching out to touch him.
Her fingers grazed his arm lightly, sending shivers down his spine. His skin was warm beneath her gentle touch, and she felt an electric spark ignite between them.
"You know, I've missed you," Natalie whispered, her voice barely audible amidst the cacophony around them. "I can't believe how much has changed since we last saw each other."
Govi smiled wistfully, his gaze locked onto hers. "Me too, Nat.
It feels surreal being here like this," Govi replied, his deep voice resonating with sincerity. "It's crazy how much time has passed."
The two friends continued to reminisce, chuckling over fond memories as they nursed their drinks. The atmosphere around them seemed to hum with an unspoken tension, their lingering touches and intense gazes betraying the simmering desire underneath.
Each word they exchanged dripped with double meaning, their laughter punctuating the night like sparks from a fire.
As the evening progressed, they found themselves drawn closer together, their bodies pressed tightly against one another. Natalie could feel Govi's heart pounding through his shirt, and the heat emanating from his body warmed her cheeks.
A waiter approached their table, offering them a menu of specialty cocktails. Natalie glanced at Govi, her emerald eyes gleaming with mischief.
"Why don't we try something new?" she suggested, motioning toward the cocktail list. "What do you think?"
Govi raised an eyebrow, intrigued by her proposal. "Sure, why not? Let's see what they have."
They scanned the menu together, their hands brushing against each other accidentally yet deliberately. Natalie noticed the way Govi's mouth curled into a smile, revealing dimples that she scarcely remembered but now found utterly charming.
They ordered two martinis, one for Natalie and one for Govi. The bartender expertly mixed the drinks, pouring the liquor into glasses with practiced precision.
As they sipped their drinks, Natalie felt herself becoming intoxicated not just by the alcohol but also by the undeniable chemistry between them. She reached out again, this time placing her hand firmly on top of Govi's. He looked down at her hand, then up at her face, his expression turning serious.
As the evening progressed the bar became louder. Natalie joked, “we should go to my hotel room the mini bar is cheaper and less loud.”
Govi's heart skipped a beat, but he managed to respond casually, "That sounds like a great idea.”
With a playful grin, Natalie stood up, gathering her purse and jacket. "Well, let's get going then, handsome."
As they left the bar, Natalie felt the cold night air envelop her, a stark contrast to the warmth inside. She pushed into Govi pretending to need warmth. Govi was beginning to believe she was sending signals.
