Chapter 2: The Phone Call That Broke Her Resolve
The cold, focused light of the standing lamp carved Rachel’s home office out of the darkness. Beyond the pool of illumination, the rest of the room melted into shadow. Her laptop hummed, a spreadsheet full of Mozilla’s impact metrics glowing on the screen. She paced, the plush carpet muffling her steps, her phone a warm, anxious weight in her hand.
It rang.
She stopped mid-pace, her heart doing a sudden, hard knock against her ribs. She inhaled, pulled her composure around her like a coat, and answered.
“You’re working late.” Janos' voice was immediate, a dark velvet rumble in her ear. It wasn’t a greeting. It was an observation that felt like an intrusion, as if he could see her in the lamplight, see the tense line of her shoulders.
“Mozilla’s term sheet landed an hour ago,” she said, forcing her tone to be all business. She walked to the desk, tracing a finger over a sticky note covered in her own frantic shorthand. “It’s… thorough. Their diligence list is six pages long. They want access to every algorithm’s decision tree, full transparency on data sourcing. It’s a fucking autopsy.”
“Of course it is,” Janos replied, the sound of a closing door a soft thump in the background. He was somewhere quiet now, giving her his full attention. “They’re not buying growth. They’re buying a halo. Your purity. They want to mount your mission on their wall like a trophy. Now, read me clause 4-B.”
She blinked, disoriented by his swift pivot. “4-B?”
“The board composition addendum. Read it.”
She scrolled, found it. “It says… one board seat, non-voting until Series B, with committee approval on all hires above director level.”
She could hear the faint scratch of a pen on paper. “Amateurs. That’s a chokehold disguised as a courtesy. They’ll strangle your agility with committees. Say no.”
“Just like that?”
“Just like that. Counter: one observer seat, period. No committee rights. Their input is welcome, their control is not.” His voice was calm, analytical, utterly convincing. “They’ll push back. Let them. Your leverage is that you don’t need their validation anymore. You have mine.”
The words hung in the silent office. You have mine. They were no longer about money. They were about allegiance.
Rachel sank into her chair, the leather cool through her silk blouse. “It’s not that simple.”
“It is exactly that simple. You’re complicating it. What’s really happening?”
“Nothing. I’m just tired.”
“Bullshit.” The word was sharp, a knife through her pretense. “Your voice is tight. You’ve been pacing. I could hear it. Something is wrong. Is it the deal?”
“No. The deal is fine. It’s… Chris.” The name fell out of her, unbidden, a sigh of defeat.
A beat of silence. Then, his voice lowered, softened into something more dangerous than anger. “Tell me exactly what he did.”
She closed her eyes, pressing her fingertips to her temple. “It’s not what he did. It’s what he keeps doing. But it's not at all relevant. "
“Rachel.” Just her name. A command.
"It's nothing you need to be concerned with. This is just personal...stuff."
Silence followed. She shifted in her seat.
"Tell me." A command. She inhaled sharply. Heat shivered through her.
She swallowed. "I promise you it's nothing. "
"I decide what is and isn't 'nothing.' And if my CEO is pacing at 10pm on a Sunday night, then it is very relevant to me and my investment. "
She shifted again, fighting against the need to answer his command. To submit. To give him what he wanted. He always managed to bring that out in her, even when no one else could.
She cleared her throat and thought of HR policies and professional boundaries. "I'm upset over a personal matter, and it is not appropriate to discuss it with you."
She could almost hear him smile over the phone. "Rachel. " His tone softened to a dangerous tenor. "You know you can come to me with anything. Tell me what happened. You're clearly upset. You need to talk to someone about it. "
She sighed, closing her eyes. Why was he always so good at prying her open? "Janos..."
"Tell me, Rachel. It will make you feel better and maybe I can help. "
She gave in. The words spilled out in a frustrated, hushed torrent. “He asks me. Every day. Like it’s a fucking item on the shared to-do list. ‘You up for it tonight?’ After I’ve just gotten the kids to sleep, after I’ve spent two hours on these spreadsheets. He just… asks.” The raw need in her for something else, something more, sharpened her tone to a brittle edge. “And he’s done in minutes. Minutes. Like finishing first wins a prize.”
Her cheeks burned.
She heard him exhale, a long, slow sound. “So he’s greedy. And he’s incompetent.”
The clinical brutality of the assessment should have offended her. It didn’t. It felt like truth, clean and cold. “He’s not incompetent. He’s just… tired. Nice. Predictable.”
“Nice,” Janos repeated, as if tasting a bland and unsatisfactory food. “Nice doesn’t fuck you properly. Nice doesn’t own what it wants. It just asks politely. No wonder you’re tense.” A pause. The static on the line felt charged. “You don’t want to be asked, do you? You want to be taken.”
A shuddering breath left her lips. Her eyes opened, staring at the harsh geometry of the financial model on her screen. The numbers blurred. “Yes.”
“Say it.”
She closed her thighs tightly but it didn't stop the rush of damp heat to her core."I want to be taken.”
“Good.” Satisfaction warmed his voice. "Are you sitting at your desk?"
“Janos…”
“Answer me."
She let out a gasp. "Yes."
“Look at your screen. Look at Mozilla’s polite, respectful offer. Their six-page diligence list. Their committees.” His voice was a hypnotic coil, binding her. “That’s what you’ve been settling for. In your boardroom. In your bed. Permission slips. Now take your hand, and push your skirt up.”
A gasp caught in her throat. Her eyes stayed locked on the spreadsheet. Her hand moved as if pulled by a string, sliding up her thigh, beneath the hem of her tailored skirt. The silk of her underwear was a faint whisper against her fingertips.
"Janos..." she wasn't sure if saying his name was a warning or a plea.
“Tell me what you’re feeling.”
“My… underwear.”
“Take it off.”
She hooked her thumbs into the lace, her movements clumsy, and slid them down her legs, until they wrapped around her ankles. The cool air of the office kissed her bare skin. She was exposed, alone in her professional sanctum, following a voice from another continent.
“Better. Now touch yourself. Just once. Tell me.”
Her fingers brushed her lower lips. They were already slick, warm. Heat flooded her cheeks. “I’m wet.”
“Because you’re finally being honest.” The sound of him shifting came through the speaker, intimate, close. “You’re wet for a man who doesn’t ask. For a man who knows what you need and gives it to you. You’re thinking about my hand on your wrist in that lounge. You’re thinking about what I’d do to you if I were there, in that office, right now.”
“Yes.” It was a moan.
“Use your fingers. Show me how much you want it. Don’t be quiet. I want to hear every fucking sound.”
Her middle finger slid inside herself with a soft, wet sound. Her head fell back, eyes closing. She was so sensitive, every nerve alive with a crushing, desperate need. She added a second finger, curling them, finding a rhythm that was sharp and insistent.
“That’s it. Fuck yourself with them. Imagine it’s my cock. Thick, and hard, and burying you into that desk. You’d take it, wouldn’t you? You’d let me bend you over your precious spreadsheets and fuck the polite right out of you.”
“Yes, god, yes…” Her breath came in short, sharp pants. Her other hand gripped the phone as she held it to her ear like a lifeline. The wet, rhythmic sound of her fingers working filled the room.
“You’d come on my cock, Rachel. You’d scream for it. You’d beg me not to stop. Say it.”
“I’d beg you… I’d beg you not to stop.” The words were torn from her, ragged and true. The coil in her belly was tightening, a furious, bright knot. Her hips rocked against her own hand, seeking more pressure, more friction.
“Then come for me now. Come for the man who owns your future. Let me hear you shatter.”
His command was the final trigger. The orgasm ripped through her, violent and utterly silencing. Her mouth opened in a ragged moan as her body convulsed, her fingers pressed deep inside, milking the waves of raw sensation that left her legs shaking and her mind blank. A low, choked cry finally escaped her lips, echoing in the quiet room.
She slumped against the chair, trembling, her forehead damp with sweat. The sound of her own ragged breathing was loud in the speaker.
For a long moment, there was only that sound. Then, his voice returned, calm, utterly composed. “Good.”
She couldn’t speak. She was liquid and ruin.
“Clean yourself up,” he said, his tone shifting back to that of a CEO discussing logistics. “The Mozilla counter-offer goes to your lawyer at nine a.m. Sharp. No committees. We’re done with asking.”
She heard the faint click of his line disconnecting.
The dial tone was a dull, relentless buzz in the silent, dark office. Rachel slowly, painfully, pulled her skirt down. She stared at the phone, then at the glowing, impersonal numbers on her screen. The chapter that had begun with a dry financial discussion had ended with her naked, coming apart to the sound of his voice.
She felt owned. She felt seen. And the terrifying, exhilarating truth was, a part of her had never felt more powerful.
