Chapter 1: Scent of the Forest

The air in the pine forest was cool, but it did nothing to soothe the fire in Kaelen’s blood. He moved through the trees, a shadow among shadows, his boots silent on the carpet of needles. The swollen moon painted everything in silver and deep blue, and his wolf paced under his skin, a restless, hungry thing. It had been like this for days—a constant, clawing ache in his gut, a relentless need that made his muscles twitch and his cock thicken against his zipper at the mere memory of a scent.

He was hard now, just from the run. It was fucking pathetic.

A breeze shifted, threading through the pines, and it carried a new scent straight into his lungs.

Honey. Wildflowers. And beneath it, the unmistakable, sharp, sugary tang of pre-heat.

Kaelen froze, every nerve ending snapping taut. His silver eyes bled to amber in an instant, his vision sharpening. Darian.

The scent was a physical blow, a spike of pure need that made his knot swell, painful and urgent, behind his fly. A low growl rumbled in his chest, unbidden. His mate. His fox was close, and he was slipping into heat. Again.

Kaelen followed the trail, a predator pulled by an invisible wire. It led him to a small clearing where an ancient oak dominated the space, its gnarled roots erupting from the earth. Curled in a hollow between two great roots was a slim figure, shivering despite the sweat gleaming on his skin.

Darian looked wrecked. His coppery hair was damp against his forehead, his cheeks flushed a deep, feverish pink. His amber eyes were glazed, pupils blown wide, but they still managed to narrow when Kaelen stepped into the clearing.

“Go the fuck away, Voss,” Darian hissed, his voice a rough scrape. He tried to sound sharp, but it ended in a whimper as another wave of heat visibly shook him. He drew his knees tighter to his chest, but the motion pulled his thin t-shirt taut across his chest, outlining the pebbled points of his nipples.

“You’re in heat,” Kaelen said, his own voice gravel.

“No shit. What gave it away? The scent or me looking like I’m about to spontaneously combust?” Darian snapped, but the defiance was cracking. His scent was spiking, becoming richer, more desperate. It flooded Kaelen’s senses, drowning out the pine and the earth. All he could smell was need.

“You’re early. It hasn’t even been three weeks.” Kaelen took a step closer, the animal in him rising, insisting he cover that scent with his own, now.

“Tell my fucking biology that,” Darian groaned, his head tipping back against the root. The line of his throat was exposed, pale and vulnerable. Kaelen wanted to bite it. “Just leave. I’ll… I’ll handle it. I don’t need you.”

Another step. “You’re lying. You reek of it, Dar. You’re drowning.”

“I don’t want you!” Darian shouted, pushing himself up on trembling arms. The movement was a mistake. A fresh, concentrated wave of his scent hit Kaelen—hot, slick, ready. It was an invitation, a plea, no matter what his mouth was saying.

Kaelen’s control snapped.

He crossed the clearing in two long strides. Darian scrambled back, but he was too slow, trapped by the tree. Kaelen dropped to his knees, his hands closing around Darian’s thighs, and yanked him forward from his hiding place, onto the bed of moss and needles.

“Kaelen—stop—” Darian gasped, but his body arched, his hips pushing up.

“You want me to stop?” Kaelen growled, leaning over him, caging him in. He nosed at the junction of Darian’s neck and shoulder, inhaling deeply, licking a stripe over his mating gland. Darian cried out, a broken sound, and his hands flew up to grip Kaelen’s shoulders, nails digging in through the fabric of his shirt. “Your scent is begging for my knot. Your body is shaking for it. Tell me to stop again.”

Darian didn’t. He turned his head, baring his throat in submission, a tear tracing a path through the dirt on his temple. “Please.”

It was all Kaelen needed.

He crushed their mouths together, the kiss messy and raw, all teeth and clashing tongues. He could taste the heat on him, a sweetness that made his head spin. His hands tore at Darian’s clothes, the soft cotton of his pants giving way with a sickening rip. Darian kicked them off, his legs wrapping around Kaelen’s waist, his heels digging into the small of Kaelen’s back to pull him closer.

“Fuck, you’re already soaked,” Kaelen muttered against his mouth, his fingers pushing inside him without any further preamble. Darian was slick and burning hot inside, clenching tight around the intrusion. He was always so fucking tight. Darian sobbed, bucking his hips, fucking himself on Kaelen’s fingers.

“More. Now.”

Kaelen wrestled with his own jeans, shoving them down just enough to free his cock. It was thick and ruddy, already dripping. His knot was a heavy, swollen bulge at the base. He lined himself up, notching his head against Darian’s hole. He looked down at his mate’s face—eyes screwed shut, lips parted, utterly wrecked and beautiful.

He drove in with one brutal, shearing thrust, burying himself to the root in that scalding, velvet vise.

Darian screamed, a raw, ragged sound that echoed in the quiet clearing. His back bowed off the ground, his inner walls fluttering and clamping down in a ruthless rhythm. “Oh god, yes… fuck, yes…”

Kaelen set a punishing pace from the start, each snap of his hips slamming Darian’s body into the soft earth. The world narrowed to this: the slap of skin, the choked sounds punched from Darian’s throat, the overwhelming scent of their joining. He bent his head, sinking his teeth into the muscle of Darian’s shoulder, not breaking the skin, but marking, owning.

“You take me so good,” Kaelen grunted, the words guttural. “This cunt was made for me. For my cock. Can you feel it? Tell me you feel it.”

“I feel it—I feel you everywhere—” Darian babbled, his own hands scrambling over Kaelen’s back, clawing, pulling him deeper. “Don’t stop, don’t you fucking stop, Kaelen, I need—!”

His words dissolved into a high, keening wail as his orgasm ripped through him. His channel clamped down in violent, milking pulses, drenching Kaelen’s thrusts with fresh slick. The intense pressure was the final trigger.

With a roar that was more wolf than man, Kaelen hammered into him one final time, his hips stuttering as he pushed deep and held. His knot inflated, swelling rapidly, locking them together in a fierce, burning stretch. He came, and it felt like his soul was being torn from his body in hot, pulsing ropes, filling Darian up, claiming him from the inside.

For a long moment, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing and the distant cry of an owl. Kaelen collapsed forward, careful to keep his weight on his elbows, his forehead pressed to Darian’s. They were tied, inseparable. Spent and full.

Slowly, the amber faded from Kaelen’s eyes. The primal fog receded, leaving the tender, terrified devotion it usually concealed. Darian’s eyes were closed, his lashes dark against his flushed cheeks. He looked exhausted, wrecked, and beautiful.

Kaelen brushed his lips softly over Darian’s eyelids. “I’ve got you,” he whispered, a promise, an apology.

Darian’s hand came up, his fingers weakly threading through Kaelen’s sweat-damp hair. He didn’t open his eyes. A single, clear tear escaped and was lost in the copper strands at his temple. His voice was a hoarse, shattered thing when he finally spoke.

“It’s getting worse, Kaelen. The heats… they’re too much. I can’t… I can’t keep doing this.”

The words hung in the cold moonlit air, heavier than the scent of sex and pine. The knot still bound them, but a new kind of tension settled in, cold and sharp in the pit of Kaelen’s stomach. The aching need was temporarily sated, but a deeper, more frightening hunger now gnawed at its edges.
