Chapter 2: To Claim
The low thrum of conversation and clinking glasses faded into a smooth, sultry Latin rhythm as Robin and Lindsey steered Rachel towards a cluster near the bar. But before they reached it, a warm presence materialized at her elbow.
"Rachel." Diego's voice, a low vibration that resonated in her bones, cut through the ambient noise. He stood close, closer than necessary, the heat from his body a tangible contrast to the cool night air. His dark eyes held hers, intense and unreadable. "You disappeared for a little while."
"Just strategizing," Rachel replied, her voice steady despite the sudden acceleration of her pulse. She gestured vaguely towards Robin and Lindsey, who were already melting back into the crowd with knowing smiles. "Nonprofit business."
"Business can wait," Diego murmured, the ghost of a smile touching his lips. He held out a hand. Palm up. An invitation, not a request. "This song demands attention. Dance with me?"
It wasn’t the smooth swing or predictable pop she’d expected. It was a tango. Raw, rhythmic, demanding. The challenge flickered in Diego’s eyes. Before she could consciously decide, her hand was in his. His grip was firm, grounding. He led her effortlessly onto the small, lantern-lit dance floor where a few other couples moved with varying degrees of skill.
The moment his other hand settled low on her back, a jolt of electricity shot through her. Not just attraction – though that was a live wire humming beneath the surface – but recognition. He moved with predatory grace, every step controlled, intentional. He pulled her into his space, her body aligning with his as if magnetized. Chest to chest, hip to hip. The intimacy was immediate, breathtaking.
He led with his whole body, shifting his weight, turning her, guiding her leg between his with a pressure so subtle it felt like thought transference. She’d taken tango lessons and loved it. They carved sharp angles in the space, her dress swirling around his legs. He dipped her suddenly, deeply, his arm iron-strong support. The terrace lights and star-strewn sky whirled above her. His face, all sharp angles and smoldering intensity, filled her vision. For a suspended moment, the world ceased to exist – the party, the watching eyes, her platform, the unspoken competition. There was only the insistent beat, the pressure of his hand, the friction of bodies moving as one, and the heat in his dark eyes that promised possession.
As he pulled her back up, her body sliding against his, he held her gaze. "You move beautifully," he said, his voice rough. "Like you feel the music in your blood."
"Or maybe," she countered, breathless, finding her footing as he initiated a rapid series of turns, "I just have an excellent lead."
His laugh was a low rumble she felt more than heard. "Flatterer. But I'll take it." He spun her out, her arm extended, then reeled her back in sharply, her back pressed flush against his chest, his arms banded around her waist. His lips were dangerously close to her ear. "Tell me about the business," he murmured, the professional question a startling, intimate counterpoint to their position. "How many nonprofits are you working with?"
The switch was jarring, brilliant. It forced her mind to engage even as her body thrummed with awareness. She pushed back slightly, creating a sliver of space as the dance flowed into a slower, more sensual walk. "Over a thousand subscribers across 700 organizations," she explained, her voice surprisingly even. "We specially reach out to progressive organizing and advocacy groups that represent marginalized communities." She met his gaze, finding genuine intellectual curiosity alongside the heat.
"Amazing," he breathed, his hand sliding a fraction lower on her back. The music swelled. "I want to understand every layer." He wasn't just talking about the platform anymore. The intensity in his eyes was overwhelming, a gravitational pull.
As the final, dramatic notes of the tango faded, applause rippled through the onlookers. Diego held their ending pose, Rachel arched back over his arm, for a heartbeat too long. The connection snapped back into place – the terrace, the lights, the crowd. And the men watching.
Brad was the first to breach the charged space. He stepped onto the dance floor just as Diego reluctantly righted Rachel. Brad’s smile was wide, charming, but his eyes held a determined glint as they flickered towards Diego.
"Bravo! Absolutely stunning!" Brad boomed, clapping his large hands together. He offered Rachel a courtly little bow. "My dear Rachel, you must save the next dance for me. Something a little less... incendiary?" He winked. "A waltz? Let this old man have a turn before Leo or Orlando snatch you away."
Diego’s jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. He didn’t release Rachel’s hand. "Brad," he said, his voice coolly polite. "We were in the middle of a conversation."
"Business can wait, Diego," Brad replied smoothly, his avuncular tone belying the steel beneath. He held his hand out to Rachel. "A dance is a dance. Surely you won't monopolize this lovely lady all night?" His eyes, crinkled at the corners, held Rachel’s. "Unless you're too tired, my dear? That tango looked exhausting."
Caught between them, Rachel felt the invisible tug-of-war. Diego’s possessive intensity radiated heat. Brad’s charm was a velvet glove over iron. She extricated her hand gently from Diego’s. "A waltz sounds lovely, Brad," she said, offering Diego an apologetic but resolute smile. "Diego, perhaps we can continue our discussion later? I promise."
Diego’s expression darkened for a fleeting second before smoothing into a mask of cool professionalism. He gave a curt nod. "Of course. Later." The promise in the word hung heavy in the air as he stepped back, his gaze lingering on her as Brad swept her into his arms.
Brad’s waltz was a different world. Smooth, fluid, effortlessly elegant. He held her with a firm, respectful distance compared to Diego’s consuming closeness. "Don't let Diego intimidate you," Brad murmured, guiding her through a sweeping turn. "Brilliant actor, passionate about causes, but sometimes... single-minded. Like a bloodhound on a scent." He chuckled. "He sees something he wants, he zeros in."
"Does he? I wasn't aware that you'd worked with him." Rachel kept her tone light, watching Brad’s expressive face. His charm was genuine, but she sensed the calculation beneath the twinkling eyes.
"Oh, produced some of his work. When it’s someone who challenges him intellectually and looks like you. Well, he gets dialed in pretty fast." Brad’s gaze swept over her appreciatively. "But tell me, Rachel, how does a woman who turns 'gold into social impact' unwind? When you're not dazzling philanthropists and actors, what does Rachel do?"
She laughed. "Sleep, mostly. Occasionally I remember to eat. Read. I live in Malta so I love being out on the water." She deflected easily. "And you, Brad? The Amazon must have been intense. How do you decompress after something like that?"
Brad launched into an engaging story about remote villages and unexpected rainstorms, his charm dialed up. He was funny, self-deprecating, and genuinely interested in her reactions. Yet, throughout the dance, his hand on her back seemed to drift lower, subtly, almost imperceptibly. His compliments grew more personal. "That dress is a magnificent color on you," he murmured, his gaze dropping to her neckline. "Brings out the fire in your hair." It wasn't overtly crude, but the proprietary undertone was unmistakable. He was staking a claim, however politely.
"Thank you," she smiled.
Near the edge of the dance floor, Orlando watched them, a gentle, almost serene expression on his face. He caught Rachel’s eye and gave a small, warm smile. Leo, standing a few feet away, leaned against a potted olive tree, his arms crossed. He observed Brad with detached amusement, like a lion watching a friendly, overeager bear. His gaze, when it shifted to Rachel, was different. Analytical. Intense. Assessing the dynamic, measuring her reactions to Brad’s attentions. He sipped his sparkling water, his expression unreadable.
As the waltz ended, Brad swept her into a final, slightly exaggerated dip. "Exquisite," he declared, holding the pose for applause. Before Rachel could fully regain her footing, George Chase materialized like smoke.
"Brad, you old rogue, relinquish the lady!" George’s voice was smooth, laced with humor and intent. He tapped Brad’s shoulder playfully but firmly. "My turn. I’ve been waiting patiently." He smiled directly at Rachel, his famous charm radiating effortless confidence. "A foxtrot, Rachel? Unless you need a break?"
Brad, caught off guard but ever the gentleman, released Rachel with a good-natured grumble. "George, you menace. Fine, fine. But I haven't finished my interrogation about her living in Malta yet. I want to know everything." His hand coasted down her spine and she shivered.
George stepped in, his movements fluid and assured as the band switched to a classic foxtrot. He held her with sophisticated ease, his hand resting lightly but possessively on her back.
"Intriguing company you're keeping tonight," George murmured, his eyes twinkling with knowing amusement. He glanced meaningfully towards where Diego stood, now talking tersely with Leo, and then at Orlando, who was approaching a waiter carrying vegan canapes. "Diego looks like he swallowed a lemon. And Brad... well, Brad is Brad. Charmingly relentless." He guided her expertly through a complex step sequence. "You handle them with remarkable poise."
"Occupational hazard," Rachel replied, matching his steps effortlessly. "Fundraisers learn to navigate strong personalities."
"Indeed," George agreed. His gaze sharpened, losing some of its practiced charm, becoming more focused, more personal. "Tell me, does your poise extend to… riskier propositions?" The question was velvet, but the edge was clear. "Partners who offer more than just a cheque? Partners who understand the… complexities… of power in this world?" His hand tightened slightly on hers. "My foundation focuses on human rights, as you know. Nasty, dangerous work sometimes. But impactful. I could use a mind like yours. A partner like you. Away from prying eyes." He leaned in conspiratorially. "Brad means well, but he’s old guard. Diego’s brilliant but burns hot. Leo…" He chuckled softly. "Leo eats people like us for breakfast. I offer something… more nuanced. More discreet." His thumb traced a faint, deliberate circle on the back of her hand.
The implication hung heavy: proposition, professional and potentially more, wrapped in the guise of shared purpose and danger. It felt thrilling and deeply dangerous. Rachel met his gaze levelly, her professional mask firmly in place, though a chill traced her spine. "George, I've already spent a good deal of time chatting with your wife. I'm happy to continue my off the cuff consulting. Rachel grinned. "I'm very fond of Amal. Ever since I worked at the Peace Corps fundraising for Let Girls Learn with the Obama Administration. Amal was so gracious."
George’s smile widened, appreciating her deflection and the sharpness beneath it. "Ah, you know my wife. I didn't realize that you two were chatting without me." His charm dialed back up, but the speculative heat in his eyes remained.
Out of the corner of her eye, Rachel saw Orlando. He stood patiently near the dance floor edge, holding two glasses of champagne. He offered her a small, encouraging smile when their eyes met. Waiting his turn.
And Leo. He hadn’t moved. Still leaning against the olive tree, swirling his sparkling water. His gaze was fixed on Rachel and George. Not jealous. Not possessive like Diego. Not charmed like Brad. Not propositioning like George. He watched with the focused intensity of a strategist observing a complex game. Calculating moves, motivations, weaknesses. His dark eyes missed nothing – the slight tension in George’s shoulders, the practiced ease of Rachel’s deflection, the way she subtly leaned away from George’s possessive hand. A small, almost imperceptible smile touched Leo’s lips. Knowing. Appreciative. Predatory.
As the foxtrot ended, George lifted Rachel’s hand, brushing his lips lightly across her knuckles. "A fascinating conversation, Ms. Bentley. I'm going to have to join those little meetings you have with my wife." He released her with clear reluctance. His eyes glowed with mischief.
"I'll be sure to tell Amal that the next time she reaches out for coffee." Rachel ducked her head politely.
Orlando stepped forward immediately, offering a glass of champagne. "Thought you might need this," he said softly, his gentle voice a balm after the intensity of George and Diego. His smile was open, sincere. "Looked like hard work." He gestured towards the tables. "Care to sit? And I’m dying to hear more about how you trained your AI on equitable evaluation frameworks. The dehumanization risk you mentioned... it resonated deeply."
Rachel took the cool glass gratefully, her fingers trembling slightly. "Sitting sounds perfect, Orlando. Thank you." She glanced towards Leo. He pushed off from the tree, setting his glass down on a nearby table. His movement was deliberate, unhurried, but with a quiet power that commanded the space between them. He began to walk towards her, his intense gaze never leaving her face, ignoring George and Brad chatting nearby, ignoring Diego’s simmering presence at the bar.
Orlando followed her look, his smile fading slightly as he saw Leo approaching. He placed a gentle, supportive hand on Rachel’s elbow, guiding her towards a secluded bench nestled amongst fragrant jasmine, a subtle act of protection.
Leo reached them just as they sat. He stopped before Rachel, looking down at her. The terrace lights caught the sharp planes of his face, the intelligence – and the sheer, focused will – in his dark eyes. He didn’t glance at Orlando. His entire attention was fixed solely on Rachel. The chatter, the music, the sea breeze – it all seemed to recede.
He didn't speak immediately. He simply held out his hand. Not a request. A silent command.
"May I?" His voice was low, gravelly, cutting through the lingering tension like a blade. His eyes held hers, offering no escape, promising an entirely different kind of dance.
"I would love to, but I need just a minute to sit. Maybe in ten minutes? Let me catch my breath?" She smiled up into his eyes.
Leo's gave a slow smile. The hint of a challenge in their depths. "Ten minutes." He glanced at Orlando. "Clocks tickting."
