Chapter 1: The Hunchback's Humiliation

The mud was cold. It seeped between his toes, a thick, greasy sludge that sucked at his feet with every forced step. The chains around his wrists were iron-cold too, biting into flesh already raw from the manacles. Quasimodo kept his head down, his one good eye fixed on the chaotic mosaic of wet cobblestones and filth beneath him.

A rotten tomato hit his shoulder with a wet smack. The juice, warm and acidic, trickled down his chest.

“Monster!” a woman’s voice shrieked, close enough to spit.

He flinched, his hunched back tightening into a tighter curve. The crowd was a single, breathing beast, all roaring mouths and glaring eyes. Their jeers washed over him, a familiar tide of hatred. He was used to the stones, the curses, the way mothers pulled their children away. But he would never get used to the nakedness. The chill air licked his skin, leaving him utterly exposed. The deformity of his spine was no longer hidden by cloth, just a twisted ridge of flesh and bone for them all to gawk at.

Ron’s hand on the chain yanked him forward, nearly sending him sprawling. “Pick up the pace, lump. We’re on a schedule.”

Ron walked with a relaxed swagger, the coiled whip hanging from his belt like a pet snake. He was a mountain of a man, his neck thick as a bull’s, his gaze a flat, disinterested sweep over the mob. He enjoyed this. Quasimodo could feel it in the casual cruelty of the tugs on the chain, in the way Ron’s lips curled when a particularly loud insult rang out.

“Make a path!” Ron bellowed, his voice cutting through the din. The crowd parted for him like water before a ship’s prow. He wasn’t just the executioner; he was the spectacle’s master of ceremonies.

They reached the platform in the square. The rain had softened the wood, making it dark and slick. Ron shoved him up the few steps. Quasimodo’s bare feet slipped, and he went down hard on one knee, the impact jolting up his spine. The crowd roared its approval.

“Clumsy as you are ugly,” Ron muttered, hauling him upright by the chain.

He was tied to the post, his arms wrapped around the rough, splintered wood. He pressed his forehead against it, the grain digging into his skin. He could smell the old, dried blood soaked into the fibers. This was where it would happen. This was where the world would finally carve its hatred into him, stripe by stripe.

Ron uncoiled the whip. The leather was dark and supple, its tail split into multiple, hungry tongues. He let it trail through the mud at his feet, a slow, deliberate gesture.

“Any last words for the good people of Paris?” Ron asked, his voice a low, conversational rumble meant only for Quasimodo. “Maybe a prayer?”

Quasimodo shook his head, a minute movement. His throat was too tight for words. He squeezed his eye shut.

The first crack was a sound that tore the world in two. It wasn’t just a noise; it was a white-hot brand laid across his back. The pain was so pure, so absolute, it erased everything else. For a moment, there was no crowd, no mud, no cold—only the fire blooming along his nerves.

He didn’t mean to cry out, but a choked gasp escaped him.

The crowd cheered.

The second lash came, lower this time, wrapping around his ribs. He could feel the skin part, a precise and searing line. He dug his fingers into the wood, his nails splintering.

“That’s it,” Ron grunted, his breath coming a little faster now. “Sing for them.”

The third strike overlapped the first, and this time Quasimodo did scream, a short, animal sound of agony. The world shrank to the post, the bite of the leather, and the roaring in his ears that was both the crowd and his own blood.

Ron paused. Quasimodo could hear his boots crunch on the muddy ground as he circled. He could feel the man’s eyes on his broken body, assessing his work.

“Not so sturdy, are we?” Ron’s voice was close to his ear. The executioner’s hand, slick with rain or sweat, grabbed a handful of Quasimodo’s hair and yanked his head back. “Look at them. They love this.”

Through a blur of tears and rain, Quasimodo saw the sea of faces, contorted with a joy he could never comprehend.

Ron released him with a shove. “Let’s see if we can find a spot that isn’t already painted.”

The whip cracked again. And again. The pain ceased to be individual strikes and became a single, consuming inferno. His back was the fire. He was no longer a man, but a vessel for agony. His consciousness flickered, the edges of his vision turning to gray static.

The whipping stopped.

The sudden silence was almost as shocking as the pain. The crowd’s roar had dulled to a restless murmur. Quasimodo hung from his chains, his weight sagging against the post. Every breath was a knife-twist in his ribs.

He heard Ron’s heavy footsteps on the platform, felt the man’s presence loom behind him. A rough hand, not the whip, touched the raw, bleeding mess of his back. It wasn't a touch of assessment. It was possessive.

Ron leaned in, his voice a vile, intimate whisper that cut through the haze. “Don’t you worry. The fun’s not over. We’re just getting started, you and I.”
