Chapter 1: Introduction
The bass thrummed through the floor, vibrating up through the soles of Shiven’s expensive leather shoes. The club was alive with the kind of energy that only money and exclusivity could buy—dim lighting, the glint of champagne flutes, the murmur of voices that never quite rose above the music. He stood at the edge of the VIP section, a glass of whiskey in hand, watching the crowd like a king surveying his kingdom.
And then *she* walked in.
Samaira.
The air seemed to shift around her as she moved, her hips swaying with a confidence that bordered on arrogance.
She was tall, even in the heels that clicked against the marble floor, her long brunette hair cascading down her back like a waterfall of ink. Her dress was a shimmering black, hugging her curves in a way that made every man in the room take notice. But it was her face that truly commanded attention. High cheekbones, a sharp jawline, and eyes that seemed to hold a challenge—she was stunning, and she knew it.
Shiven watched her from across the room, his gaze drawn to her like a moth to a flame. He had seen beautiful women before, dated them, bedded them. But there was something different about this one.
She moved with an air of detachment, as if she was above it all, and Shiven found himself intrigued. He had always been a man who thrived on challenges, and this woman seemed to be the epitome of one.
She paused at the bar, her back to the room, and Shiven saw his opportunity. He weaved through the crowd, his eyes never leaving her. As he approached, he heard her voice, clear and confident, ordering a drink. "Negroni, please. Make it strong."
The bartender, a young man with a nervous smile, nodded and started to prepare her drink. Shiven leaned against the bar next to her, his elbow brushing hers.
She didn’t flinch, didn’t even glance his way—just kept her focus on the drink being made. He exhaled slowly, letting the scent of his cologne linger in the air between them. "You know," he said, his voice low and smooth, "most women would’ve turned around by now."
Her lips curled into a smirk, just a hint of amusement. "Most women wouldn’t be wasting their time with someone who doesn’t know how to order a drink."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "Fair point." He slid onto the stool beside her, close enough that their thighs brushed. "But I’m not most men."
She finally turned to face him, her dark eyes narrowing slightly.
"And what makes you think I'm interested in you being anything but 'most men'?"
Shiven grinned, undeterred by her frostiness. "Because, sweetheart, I'm the one who can make your drink stronger."
Her eyebrows arched, a hint of surprise flashing across her face before she quickly masked it. "Is that so?"
He nodded, signaling the bartender. "Two Negronis, please. Make mine a double." He turned back to her, his gaze holding hers. "I've found that a good drink can be a great conversation starter."
She took the glass the bartender offered her, swirling the liquid gently.
"And what makes you think I want a conversation with you?"
Shiven leaned back, his eyes never leaving hers. "Because you haven't walked away yet."
Samaira took a sip of her drink, her eyes flickering over him. "Maybe I'm just waiting for my friends."
He smiled, a slow, confident curve of his lips. "Maybe. But they're not here yet, are they?"
She rolled her eyes, but there was a hint of a smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "You're quite full of yourself, aren't you?"
Shiven chuckled, taking a sip of his drink.
The bitter-sweet tang of the Negroni coated his tongue, grounding him in the moment. "Full of myself? No. Just confident."
Samaira tilted her head slightly, studying him with those sharp, assessing eyes. "Confidence and arrogance are two different things."
He shrugged, leaning in just enough that the scent of her perfume—something warm and floral—wrapped around him. But I like to think I know the difference."
She took another sip, her gaze flickering down to his lips before she looked away, as if she’d caught herself. "You’re not what I expected."
"Oh?" He raised an eyebrow, intrigued.
"And what did you expect?"
Samaira shrugged, her gaze drifting over the crowd. "I don't know. Someone... less charming, maybe?"
Shiven laughed, a sound that was warm and genuine, drawing a few glances their way. "Well, I guess I'll have to work on that."
She looked back at him, her eyes glinting with amusement. "I wouldn't bother. It's not a bad thing to be charming."
He leaned in slightly, his voice low. "And what about you, Samaira? What are you?"
She blinked, taken aback. "What do you mean?"
He gestured to her, his gaze sweeping over her. "You're beautiful, confident, successful.
But what makes you tick? What's your story?"
Samaira took a moment before answering, her gaze steady on his. "I'm not one of those girls who'll spill her guts to a stranger in a bar, no matter how charming he is."
Shiven chuckled, not at all put off. "Fair enough. But everyone has a story, Samaira. Even you."
She took another sip of her drink, her eyes never leaving his. But mine isn't for sale."
He nodded, respecting her boundaries. "Understood. How about this instead? Tell me something you like. Anything."
She considered him for a moment, then a small smile played at the corners of her mouth.
"Alright, I'll play. I like... old movies. The black and white ones."
Shiven raised an eyebrow, surprised. "Really? Which ones?"
Samaira's gaze drifted to the dance floor, her expression softening slightly. "Casablanca. Gone with the Wind. Citizen Kane. The usual suspects, I guess."
He nodded, intrigued. "I've seen them all. But I must admit, I never pegged you for a classic film buff."
She turned back to him, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "And what did you peg me for, Shiven?"
He leaned back, his gaze holding hers. "Honestly? I thought you'd be more into...
*something* with a little more edge. Something that screams 'I’m untouchable.'"
Samaira let out a soft, knowing laugh, the sound rich and melodic. "And yet here you are, asking me questions like we’re not two people in a room full of strangers who could walk away at any moment."
Shiven didn’t flinch. "Because I don’t want to walk away."
She studied him for a long moment, her dark eyes sharp with curiosity. "Why not?"
He leaned in just enough to make the air between them feel charged, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Because you’re the kind of woman who makes me want to play a game. Want to dance?" Shiven asked, his voice smooth as he extended a hand toward Samaira, his fingers brushing the back of hers.
She glanced at his hand, then at the dance floor where the music had shifted into a sultry, slow beat. Her lips curled into a smirk, but there was a flicker of something else in her eyes—curiosity, maybe even a hint of challenge.
"You're persistent," she said, her voice low and teasing.
"I prefer the term *determined*," Shiven corrected, his thumb brushing the inside of her wrist, sending a jolt of electricity up her arm. "And I think you know it."
Samaira exhaled sharply, her breath catching just slightly.
The warmth of his touch lingered, and she could feel the heat radiating from his body. She pulled her hand away, but not before her fingers lingered on his, as if she couldn’t help herself.
"You’re *insufferable*," she said, her voice a low growl, but her eyes betrayed her—she was intrigued.
"Insufferable?" Shiven repeated, feigning offense, though his smile was warm and knowing. "I think you’re just afraid of losing."
Samaira rolled her eyes, but she did not deny it. Instead, she stood up, her body moving with a fluid grace that made it clear she knew exactly how to command attention.
The dress clung to her curves, the fabric whispering against her skin as she walked toward the dance floor. Shiven followed, his steps deliberate, his eyes never leaving her.
The music pulsed around them, a slow, seductive beat that seemed to sync with the rhythm of their breathing. Samaira stood at the edge of the dance floor, her posture rigid, her arms crossed over her chest as if she were bracing herself for something.
"You're not going to dance with me," she said, her voice cutting through the hum of the club.
Shiven leaned against the railing, his gaze locked onto her.
She turned to face him, her eyes narrowing slightly.
"I'm not here to be your plaything, Shiven." He simply tilted his head, his gaze lingering on her lips before meeting her eyes again. "And I’m not here to be yours."
Samaira’s breath hitched, her chest rising and falling slightly with the effort of holding back whatever emotion threatened to surface. "You’re ridiculous."
"Am I?" He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, velvety tone that seemed to wrap around her like silk.
