Chapter 1: Introduction
You know what's better than going out and having an active social life during your college years? Staying home and crafting the perfect mage build in Yon Wizards Ballin' the video game. That's exactly what Max was doing this Saturday, meticulously putting elemental attributes on his staff to make the ultimate quad-element attack spell to beat his rival, ChungusManxx650. Would others consider this a waste of time and effort? Undoubtedly. Did that stop Max? Not at all.
Max was a master of his craft (well, if you didn't count ChungusManxx650), and his room was a reflection of his dedication and focus. The couch, a throne of comfort and solitude, was a faithful guardian of Max's behind, even if it bore the scars of countless all-nighters.
A cursory glance around the place told the story of its occupant.
Textbooks on advanced game theory and fantasy literature sat incongruently among stacks of empty takeout containers and half-empty energy drinks. The air was thick with the scent of musk, desperation, and a faint whiff of sadness. But that was Max's sanctuary, his refuge from society and a world that just didn't understand him.
A world where intelligence wasn't celebrated, kindness was considered a weakness, and empathy was a rare commodity. But in his little room, he reigned supreme, surrounded by the remnants of his triumphs and the echoes of the battles he fought alone.
The curtains were drawn shut, blocking out any semblance of sunlight, leaving only the cold blue light from the screens to guide Max's weary eyes. The ticking of the clock seemed to gain a sinister tone in the silence, mocking his relentless dedication to what others deemed a trivial pursuit.
An ever-present reminder that the clock marched forward, while Max remained locked in a perpetual tug-of-war with ChungusManxx650's mage-build. Abruptly, a soft hum filled the room, growing louder and more insistent, as if the universe were protesting the all-nighter Max was pulling.
A kaleidoscope of colors swirled serpentine beneath the well-worn couch, forming a shimmering magic circle pulsating with arcane energy.
Max blinked, and rubbed his eyes, unsure if the mesmerizing sight was a result of hours spent staring at screens or actual sorcery.
The hum of the air conditioner seemed to sync with the pulsating of the ritual circle, creating a cacophony that rendered it impossible to discern one sound from the other. The swirling colors intensified, forming a vortex that threatened to consume the couch and everything on it.
Max's eyes widened in shock as he realized that this was no part of the game or a figment of his imagination.
The magic circle was real, and its presence in his room was as inexplicable as it was alarming. He pushed himself up from the couch, stumbling back, tripping over a discarded game controller.
The vortex had a life of its own now, like a living, breathing creature birthing itself into existence. Max could feel the hairs on his arms stand on end as raw magical energy coursed through the air, making the very molecules vibrate with potential and peril.
The pure force of it threatened to short out all electronic devices within range, and even the mighty air conditioner seemed hesitant to maintain its cool façade in the face of such raw power.
As the vortex grew larger, the colors swirling within it began to coalesce into distinct shapes — not faces, but entities of pure magic. They seemed to be reaching out towards him, beckoning him towards the swirling abyss. Max stumbled backwards, every instinct screaming at him to flee, yet courage found its way to the forefront of his mind.
He was a brave man, with a dauntless spirit, and the thought of running, of not facing the unknown, was unfathomable to him.
He braced himself, his back pressed against the wall, hands gripping the rough plaster for dear life. The wavering apparitions continued to encircle him, their luminescent forms shimmering like the aurora borealis. Were they hands or grasping claws, he couldn't tell, but they seemed to want to take everything he had from his dorm, himself included, and drag them through the floor and into the circle.
Max's heart hammered in his chest like a wild beast caught in a snare, threatening to rend itself apart with every beat.
His breath came in ragged gasps, his brain screaming at him to run, to escape whichever horrors lay beyond the veil, but his feet remained rooted to the spot.
The hands had finally encircled him, grabbed him by his shorts and hoodie, and were now tugging on him with great force that caused his bare feet to drag across the carpet. He almost stumbled as he was pulled in, the hands becoming more numerous and grabbing hold of his wrists and ankles as they forced him towards the portal.
Their grip was icy, unlike anything he had ever felt before, piercing him to his core with a chill that no amount of heavy winter clothing could warm.
The shimmering light enveloped him, blending the edges of reality together into a melange of the concrete and the ethereal. His mind raced, and a million thoughts went through his head; if this was where his life was going to end, he needed to find a way back, to return to where he belonged.
The magic circle pulled Max in like a vortex does to a stray leaf in the wind.
The world seemed to warp and twist around him, and as he moved further into it, his senses became heightened. He could smell the distinct metallic tang of ozone, and hear a sharp ringing sound that drowned out all others.
The colors within the vortex were a hypnotizing kaleidoscope, never repeating themselves as they swirled and melded together. He thought he saw shades of violet, emerald, and gold, but he couldn't be sure. The very air around him felt electric, charged with an energy that made his skin tingle.
Max had heard about magic, read about it in countless fantasy novels and games, but experiencing it firsthand was a daunting, exhilarating feeling he had never imagined.
The vortex spit him out like a cat would its prey, and as his eyes adjusted to the new surroundings, he realized that he wasn't in his dorm anymore. The room he was in was like a parody of his own, though twisted in a fancy medieval way. Stone walls, wooden floors, candles and shimmering potions along the wall, and a distinct aroma of something unlike anything he'd ever smelled before.
His eyes scanned everything they could, and he began to notice something. He was alone, a circle on the floor being what summoned him with glowing crystals hovering over the ring, and some of his belongings were there. He saw his tv wedged in the corner, his game console on a chair, and his soda and pizza on the floor nearby alongside his books, but one thing was missing, the biggest thing of all. His couch. Where was it, and what was this looming feeling overhead?
He looked up right on time to see his couch coming through a glowing portal, coming down right on his head. He gasped, scrambled, and tried to move, but he was already doomed. The couch came down cushion-first on top of him, mashing him into the floor.
The impact knocked the wind out of Max's lungs, and for a moment, he was left as stunned as a squirrel caught in oncoming traffic. Yet, despite the initial shock, Max couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude that he wasn't squashed like a bug under the massive piece of furniture. His relief would be short-lived, however, as the weight of the couch kept him from taking in a full breath of air.
With every ounce of strength he had he managed to escape the worst of it, but he realized that he was unable to escape entirely. All he could do was lay there, smushed beneath his couch and await someone to come along.
