Patrick Jane has recently returned from Venezuela and has joined the FBI. He has arranged for Teresa Lisbon to work with him again. They have fallen into a familiar rhythm of working together as colleagues, but Patrick wants more. He loves Teresa, and is pretty sure Teresa feels the same, but has been trying to hide it from him for quite some time. Prior to avenging the death of his family and hiding for two years in Venezuela, he had not been able to acknowledge her feelings for him or his for her. Now, he has set out to draw a confession from her and to seduce her into not only his bed but also into his life.

Chapter 8: The Invitation

The sting was a bright, clarifying fire. Teresa lay on the padded table, her fingers gripping the edges as the esthetician applied another strip of hot wax. A taut, searing pull, and another swath of bare skin was revealed. She breathed out slowly through her nose, focusing on the sterile, floral scent of the room, the low hum of a space heater in the corner.

She had left the bullpen at two, muttering something about a doctor’s appointment.Patrick had been across the room, pretending to study a geographic profile map. She’d felt his eyes on her back as she gathered her jacket, a tangible heat that had nothing to do with the room’s temperature. The procedure was more intimate than she’d anticipated. The vulnerability of the position, the clinical efficiency of the woman’s hands. She thought of the women she’d overheard in locker rooms and at agency mixers over the years, their conspiratorial giggles about “landing strips” and “Hollywoods” done for anniversaries or honeymoons. She’d always dismissed it as performative, a silly concession to a patriarchal script. Now, as the wax tugged at her most sensitive skin, she understood it wasn’t about conformity. It was about transformation.A deliberate, private preparation for a specific kind of touch.

Afterward, smooth and strangely hypersensitive, she stood in the boutique section of the spa, her body throbbing with a low-grade, tender ache. She bought a small bag of overpriced products: a vial of jasmine-scented oil, a bar of French-milled soap, a moisturizer that promised to soothe and soften. The salesgirl had given her a knowing smile.Teresa paid in cash.

Now, in her car heading home, the bag sat on the passenger seat like an accusation. She glanced at it, her face flushing. What the hell had come over her? This stuff—preening, primping, the orchestration of smooth skin and pleasant smells—it had never mattered. Her routines were functional: soap, shampoo, a quick swipe of deodorant. Sex had been about need, a friction-based release. It was never about… presentation.

But Patrick wasn’t just anyone.Patrick saw everything. He would notice. He would appreciate the detail, the effort, the submission inherent in the act. That thought sent a slow, deep curl of heat through her, centered in the newly-bared flesh between her legs.It was a signal. A white flag and a challenge, rolled into one.Her phone, face-up on the console, remained silent.

At home, the silence of her bungalow felt different. It was no longer a sanctuary but a stage.

The stage needed preparation. Teresa moved through her bungalow with a tactical focus, emptying the small spa bag onto her bathroom counter. The vial of oil, the soap, the lotion—they were tools, just like her sidearm or her badge, deployed for a different kind of operation. She turned the shower to a scalding heat, letting the steam fog the glass enclosure until the room was a warm, opaque cocoon.Under the blistering spray, she used the new soap. It lathered into a rich, floral-scented cream that felt alien on her skin. She washed her body methodically, her hands sliding over the smooth plane of her stomach, the newly sensitive skin between her legs throbbing faintly under the water’s assault. She washed her hair twice, working the shampoo into her scalp until it squeaked.

Afterwards, wrapped in a towel, she faced the mirror wiped clear of steam. Her reflection was pink and clean. She blow-dried her long, dark hair with a discipline usually reserved for crime scene analysis, sectioning it off, directing the nozzle down the shafts until it fell in a heavy, straight curtain. She applied the lotion everywhere, the cool gel soaking into her pores, the jasmine scent rising to fill the small room.

Damp and scented, she stood in her bedroom, the towel pooled at her feet. The practical cotton sheets on her bed looked suddenly childish, a relic of a simpler, more restrained life. She stripped them off in quick, jerky motions, balling them into her hamper. From the back of her linen closet, she pulled a set she’d bought on a lonely, impulsive afternoon months ago—deep burgundy rayon, slick and cool to the touch.

A brief, shame-faced internet search once had declared them the best for sex.The fabric was slippery, decadent. She made the bed with sharp military corners, the burgundy a dark stain against the pale walls. The stage was set.

Now, the costume. She opened her drawer and looked at the options: practical cotton, sporty microfiber, a single delicate lace set still tagged from a gift she’d given herself and never worn. She thought of Patrick’s eyes, that predatory blue gaze that missed nothing. He’d appreciate the architecture, the framing. She pulled on the black lace bralette, its cups sheer and minimal, and a pair of soft, low-rise jeans. It was casual, but intentional. The denim hugged her hips, the lace barely contained her.

She could meet him at the door in a paper bag and he’d be interested, she thought with a sardonic twist of her lips. But she wanted this to be different. She wanted it to be them, stripped of the games, finally real. Her stomach flipped, a riot of trapped wings. She forced herself to the kitchen, made a piece of toast, and managed two bites before the dryness made swallowing impossible. The butterflies were winning.

Finally, a glass of Merlot in hand, she settled on the couch. The nerve-wracking part wasn't the act, she realized. It was the surrender of control, the silent, anxious wait. The wine tasted sour. She abandoned the glass on the coffee table.

Her phone felt heavy in her hand. She shifted on the cushions, adjusting the bralette so one sheer cup slipped askew, the dark peak of her nipple barely veiled by the lace. She unbuttoned her jeans, slid her hand inside, her fingertips just brushing the lace of her panties, giving the illusion of touching herself. She held the phone above her, angling it, her lips parted, her green eyes dark and direct. She took the photo. She looked at it—a composition of want and invitation. Her thumb hovered. Then she hit send. The silence after was absolute. It swallowed the hum of the refrigerator, the distant tap of a branch against the window. It was a vacuum, and in its center, Teresa Lisbon sat perfectly still, listening to the frantic beat of her own heart .She counted seconds. Then followed up with “the door is open”. Seconds turned to minutes. The phone was a black hole in her palm. It absorbed the last of her nerve, the calculated confidence of the photo dissolving into the vacuum of his silence. She listened to the slow, loud tick of the living room clock, each second a hammer blow to her resolve.

Then she heard it.The soft click of her front door unlatching. The whisper of its hinges. The definitive snick of the latch catching again. Her body knew it was him before she saw him. The air in the room changed, charged and still all at once, like the calm before a storm breaks. She stood and turned. He was removing his suit jacket, his eyes fixed on her with a hunger so raw it felt like a physical touch. He tossed the jacket over the back of her reading chair without looking away."Hello, Teresa."

Her name in his mouth was a benediction and a threat. She resisted the violent urge to cross her arms over her breasts, to cover the sheer lace she had so brazenly displayed. It was suddenly, terrifyingly clear. She was not in control. She had no idea what would happen next. A shudder of pure anticipation rippled through her.He smiled, a slow, predatory curve of his lips. "The picture was gorgeous."She blushed softly, the heat spreading down her neck. He stepped out of his shoes, aligning them neatly by the door. Then he started to roll up his sleeves to his elbows, slowly and deliberately. She watched, hypnotized, as the crisp white cotton folded back. His forearms flexed with each movement, tendons and veins surfacing under his skin, the same hands that traced evidence and now promised a different kind of dissection. He finished, standing there in his tailored trousers and rolled sleeves, a masterpiece of restrained intent."Now," he said softly. "Why am I here?"

Teresa remembered his threat in the concrete garage, his promise to make her ask, to make her beg.A wild, defiant part of her reared up from under the nerves. She wanted to push him.To see the sharp edge of his control fracture. "I need you to sign some paperwork for the morning," she said, her voice a parody of professional innocence. "So I can send it to Abbott first thing."

Patrick took a step forward, then another, a slow, measured advance.A sly, wicked half-smile crossed his lips."It's Saturday." His voice was a low, intimate rumble."Try again."She backed up a pace, biting her lip. "Okay.I need your advice on a birthday gift for Cho." She had no idea when Cho's birthday was, but she was pretty sure it wasn't today. Patrick moved around the side of her couch, his gaze never leaving hers, forcing her to retreat toward the hallway.

"Cho's birthday is six months away," he stated, still advancing.Teresa touched a finger to her lips to keep from smiling. Then she dragged her fingertip slowly over her chin, down the column of her neck. She splayed her hand over her chest, resting it between her breasts, feeling her heart hammer against her palm. Patrick's eyes narrowed, darkening to a stormy sea-blue."You're provoking me."

She backed toward the open doorway of her bedroom, her green eyes locked on his. She put her hands on her hips, her fingers hooking under the waistband of her low-rise jeans. She pushed them down, just an inch, until the delicate black lace of her underwear showed. "Am I?"It was the last word she got out.

He closed the distance between them in two long strides. His hands seized her hips, his fingers digging into the denim, and he spun her around, pushing her through the bedroom doorway. Her back met the wall just inside the room with a soft thud, the air leaving her lungs in a gasp. He loomed over her, caging her in."You sent me a picture of your tits," he murmured, his mouth inches from hers. His breath was warm and smelled of mint and something darker."You got waxed. I can smell the jasmine on your skin from across the room." His thumb stroked over the exposed lace at her hip."You’re wearing the lace I’m going to ruin."

She stared up at him, her chest heaving."Patrick—"

"Ask." The word was a crack of command.

She swallowed. The defiance bled out, leaving only the raw, aching truth. "I want you."

“Not good enough." He leaned in, his lips brushing the shell of her ear."Use your words, Teresa.Tell me what you want me to do to you. Be specific.Or I walk out that door and this never happens."

A low whimper escaped her. The humiliation was acute, but it coiled with the heat, making it unbearable. She thought of his promises in the garage, filthy and dark."Control me," she breathed.

The words hung in the air, a stark confession that seemed to alter the very molecules between them.Patrick went utterly still.

Teresa panicked. She could see she had surprised him. His face, a mask of predatory intent just a second before, had gone slack, his eyes widening almost imperceptibly. He had been expecting her to demand he fuck her, to use crude, direct language that matched his own. And it was what she had intended to say. But the deeper, simpler truth—a desire she had buried for so many years—had spilled out instead.

His hands, which had been gripping her hips with bruising force, softened. The predatory glare in his blue eyes fractured, replaced by something she had never seen there before: a raw, startled vulnerability. He stared at her as if she had spoken in a foreign tongue, his breath leaving his lungs in a quiet, deflating rush."Control you," he repeated, his voice hollow, testing the words.

The silence stretched, thin and brittle. Teresa watched the shock reverberate through him, saw his meticulously constructed facade of control splinter around the edges. She had thrown a rock and shattered glass. Panic, cold and swift, flooded her veins. She had miscalculated. She had shown a hand he wasn’t prepared to see, and now the entire game was in jeopardy.

Teresa dropped her gaze to the buttons on his shirt, unable to look at his face as she rushed to explain. “I’m sorry,” she said, the words tumbling out too fast. “I’m sorry for asking.I just get so tired of holding everything together all the time. I got carried away.” She shook her head, taking a small step back, her shoulder blades pressing into the wall. “It’s fine.Forget I said anything. I’m not even sure where that came from.”

Patrick caught her chin, his fingers firm but not cruel, and brought her gaze back to his. The vulnerability was gone, burned away by a blaze of something more profound. “Don’t you dare,” he whispered, his voice thick. “Don’t you dare apologize for being the only real thing in my life.” He searched her face, his thumb stroking her jaw. “Control you,” he said again, but now it was an awed realization, a sacred vow. “Alright.”

He kissed her then, but it was nothing like before. It was deep and claiming, yet heartbreakingly tender. His tongue traced the seam of her lips until she opened for him, a soft sob catching in her throat. He swallowed the sound, his hands moving from her face to frame it, holding her as if she were something fragile and infinitely precious. The heat between them shifted, intensifying from a competitive burn to a forge fire.

“Take these off,” he murmured against her mouth, his fingers tugging at the waistband of her jeans. She fumbled with the button, her hands shaking, and pushed the denim down her hips. He helped her, kneeling to guide the fabric over her ankles, his hands smoothing up her calves, her thighs. He looked up at her, his eyes dark pools of intent. “The bra, too.”

She reached behind, unhooked the clasp, and let the flimsy lace fall away. The cool air of the room puckered her nipples into tight peaks. He didn’t touch her there, not yet. He simply looked, his gaze a physical caress that made her skin flush. “You’re so beautiful,” he said, the simplicity of the statement dismantling her completely.“Now, get on the bed. On your back.”

She moved to the burgundy sheets, their slick coolness a shock against her heated skin. She lay back, watching as he stood and finished undressing. He removed his shirt, his torso lean and muscled, then his trousers, but he left his underwear on.He stood there for a moment, a sculpture of defined muscle and latent power against the soft, dark backdrop of her room.

Then he moved to the bed, the mattress dipping under his weight. He didn’t cover her body with his. Instead, he lay beside her, propped on one elbow, his eyes tracing the lines of her face, her throat, the gentle rise and fall of her breasts. His fingertips, feather-light, brushed a strand of hair from her temple. The touch was so tender it made her ache.

"You have no idea," he began, his voice low and rough-edged, "what it does to me.Knowing you're here. Knowing you let me see you like this." He leaned in and captured her mouth in a kiss that was devastating in its softness.

His tongue gently sought hers, a slow, deep exploration that spoke of belonging rather than conquest. When he pulled back, his lips were damp and his eyes held a sheen she couldn’t name.He shifted then, sitting up against the headboard and gently guiding her to sit between his legs. He pulled her back against his chest, her spine aligned with the hard plane of his torso, his arms coming around to rest on her stomach. His chin rested on the crown of her head. They sat like that in the quiet, his breath stirring her hair, his heartbeat a steady drum against her back. The frantic pulse of her own blood began to slow, syncing with his measured rhythm.

He turned his head, his lips brushing her ear. "Thank you," he whispered, the words warm and quiet in the dim room. She tensed, confused."For what?"

"For trusting me enough to ask," he said.He tightened his arms around her, a secure, grounding pressure. "I am honoured, Teresa. Truly."He kissed her temple, a soft press of his lips. "It’s all very simple now.You just need to let go. Obey me. I will take care of you." He said it not as a command, but as a promise, a fundamental truth of this new space between them.

Teresa nodded, a slow dip of her chin. Her heart was racing again, but it was a different kind of race—not towards a cliff, but into a deep, unknown forest. She was uncertain now, completely, of what happened next. The game had ended. This was the reality, and it was vast and quiet.

Patrick stroked his fingers through her hair, from the crown down to the ends that fanned over her shoulders and his chest. The repetitive motion was hypnotic, soothing the last frayed edges of her nerves.

"Can I ask you something?"he murmured.

"Yes."

His fingers continued their slow path through her dark hair. "Have you ever explored this?Power dynamics in bed?"

Teresa shook her head, the movement slight against his shoulder. “No." She let out a slow breath. "I used to ask. Earlier on."

The admission felt clumsy, embarrassing in the sacred quiet. "Most guys said no. Thought it was weird. Or a trick. Or even funny sometimes.”

“And the ones who said yes?" Patrick prompted, his voice devoid of judgement, only a calm curiosity.

She gave a short, humourless laugh."They looked after themselves. Got off on the idea of a woman handing them the reins, I guess. Didn't bother much with what I needed from it." She swallowed, the old resentment a sour taste."It was never about me letting go. It was about them taking. So I just… stopped asking."

There was a long silence. He stopped stroking her hair and simply held her, his arms a firm band around her middle. She could feel the heat of his skin through the cotton of his briefs, the solid reality of him at her back. Then, with a self-deprecating laugh she didn't feel, she shook her head again. "God, I probably sound ridiculous. Talking about other partners when we're… here. Like this."

Patrick’s arms tightened almost imperceptibly."You sound human," he corrected gently. His hand left her stomach and came up to cradle her jaw, turning her head just enough so he could look at her profile. His blue eyes were serious, clear. "And you're not with them. You're with me."He kissed her then, a soft, lingering seal on the statement. "The past is just information, Teresa. It tells me what not to do."

He released her jaw and his hands returned to her body, but his touch was different now.It was purposeful, studying. His palms slid up from her stomach to cup the undersides of her breasts, his thumbs stroking idle circles on the soft skin. He wasn't demanding a reaction yet, just learning her, mapping the territory he'd been granted.

"This is about you," he whispered into her hair."Your surrender. Your release. I'm just the guide." His thumbs brushed over her nipples, a whisper of contact that made her gasp.

He continued the motion, a slow, maddening back-and-forth that hardened the peaks into aching points of sensation. Then, one hand slid down from her right breast, over the flat plane and smooth skin she had so meticulously prepared for him.

His palm skated down between her legs and cupped her, his long fingers splaying over her pussy. The contact was direct, possessive, and she jerked against him, a sharp intake of breath hissing through her teeth. He applied pressure, but it was a tease—just the firm, warm weight of his hand, his fingers curled slightly, not dipping, not probing. It was a promise of touch, nothing more.

She shifted her hips, a tiny, involuntary grind against his palm, seeking friction. He held firm, his hand becoming an immovable object. He increased the pressure by a fraction, just enough to make her whimper, but he didn’t give her what she craved. His other thumb continued its lazy, circular torture on her nipple.

“We need a safe word,” he said, his voice a low rumble against her ear. His tone was conversational, almost clinical, a stark contrast to the intimate violation of his hands.

“What?” she breathed, her mind fogged with need.

“A word. Something you say if it’s too much, if you need to stop, if you need a breath. Something unmistakable.” He pinched her nipple, a bright spike of pleasure-pain that made her back arch. “This isn’t about ignoring your limits. It’s about exploring them. The safe word is the guardrail.”

“Okay,” she whispered, her hips making another desperate little circle against his stationary hand.

“Pick one. Nothing we’d normally say. Not ‘stop’ or ‘no.’ Something clear.”

Her brain, swimming in sensation, scrabbled for purchase. A memory surfaced, absurd and perfect. “Cinnamon,” she gasped.

He stilled for a second, then she felt the vibration of a soft chuckle in his chest. “Cinnamon. Alright.” He kissed her shoulder. “I’ll be checking in with you. More than usual tonight. Because it’s new. I’ll ask you for a color. Green for good, yellow for pause, red for stop. ‘Cinnamon’ is the emergency brake. Do you understand?”

“Yes.” The word was a sigh of surrender. The structure, the rules, were an unexpected relief. They created a space within the chaos where she could let go.

“Good.” His hand between her legs finally moved, but only to adjust. He pressed the heel of his palm firmly against her clit, a steady, unyielding pressure that made her cry out. “Now lay back on the bed. Properly.”

He shifted out from behind her. She obeyed, lowering herself onto the slick burgundy sheets, her body a pale arc against the dark fabric. She watched him, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her nipples hard and peaked, the ache between her legs a throbbing, empty pulse. He stood beside the bed, looking down at her, his eyes tracing every line and curve as if committing her to memory. The hunger was back in his gaze, but it was tempered now with a fierce, protective focus that made her heart clench.

“Hands above your head,” he instructed, his voice soft but absolute. “Grab the headboard.”

She reached up, her fingers curling around the cool wooden slats. The position arched her back, thrust her breasts upward, exposed the vulnerable line of her throat. She was utterly displayed, and the vulnerability was a drug. He looked his fill, a slow, possessive scan that left heat in its wake.

Then he joined her on the bed, kneeling between her splayed legs. He didn’t touch her yet. He just looked, his gaze a physical weight. “Color, Teresa?”

She swallowed, her mouth dry. “Green,” she breathed. “Very, very green.”
