Chapter 4: The Rhythm of Her Body
The contraction loosened its grip on her body in a slow, reluctant sigh. Anya's breath came out in a shuddering rush, the tension draining from her shoulders, her spine. She was still leaning back against him, her weight heavy and warm in the circle of his arms, her hand still pressed over his where it rested on the hard globe of her belly.
Then her fingers closed around his wrist, pulling his hand away from her stomach. She turned in his arms, her face flushed, her dark eyes bright with something that had nothing to do with pain.
"Winston," she said, and her voice was low, almost a growl. Her hand slid up his chest, over his collarbone, and curled around the back of his neck. She pulled him down hard, her mouth crashing against his, and there was nothing gentle in the kiss. It tasted of salt and sea air and a raw, desperate hunger. Her tongue pushed past his lips, demanding, claiming.
He made a sound against her mouth, half surprise, half need, and his hands found her hips. She was still wearing the emerald wrap dress, loose and silken, and beneath it her body was heavy with the child, her belly pressing warm and firm against his stomach. She broke the kiss just long enough to speak, her breath hot against his lips.
"Touch me," she whispered. "Between my thighs. I need you to touch me."
His hand found the hem of the dress, sliding up along the thick warmth of her thigh. She was already bare beneath, no underwear, and when his fingers brushed the slick heat of her, she gasped into his mouth. She was soaked, her flesh swollen and eager, and she arched into his hand with a guttural moan that seemed to come from somewhere deep in her chest.
"Yes," she breathed. "God, yes."
He knelt before her without a word, his fingers working between her legs, stroking the length of her wet folds. She spread her legs wider, her hand bracing on his shoulder, and her head fell back. The morning light caught the line of her throat, the curve of her belly, the heavy weight of her breasts straining against the silk of her dress.
"One more time," she said, her voice fractured. "I want to come undone one more time before this baby comes. Before everything changes."
He understood. This was her last rebellion, her last moment of being just Anya, just a woman, before she became somebody's mother. He slipped a finger inside her, and she cried out, her hips grinding against his hand.
"More," she demanded. "Fuck me with your fingers, Winston. Make me feel it."
He added a second finger, pushing deep, curling against the soft, ridged wall inside her. She was tight and hot and so wet that her fluid coated his hand, dripping down his wrist. Her moans came faster, higher, and she gripped his hair with her free hand, pulling his face up toward hers.
"Look at me," she said. "I want you to watch me fall apart."
He looked. Her eyes were huge and dark, her lips parted, her cheeks flushed. She was so beautiful in this moment, so raw and unguarded, and he felt something twist in his chest that had nothing to do with guilt. His thumb found her clit, circling it with deliberate pressure, and she bucked against him.
"That's it," she hissed. "Don't stop. Don't you fucking stop."
He worked her relentlessly, his fingers pumping into her while his thumb pressed and circled and teased. Her breathing turned ragged, her body trembling on the edge, and she clung to him like he was the only solid thing in the world.
"Winston," she gasped, his name a plea and a prayer. "Winston, I'm going to come. I'm going to come so hard."
"Then come," he said, his voice rough. "Let go, Anya."
She did. Her body convulsed around his fingers, her inner walls clenching in waves, and she let out a long, keening cry that shattered the quiet of the morning. She bucked against his hand, riding out the pleasure, her nails digging into his shoulder through his shirt. When the spasms finally slowed, she slumped against him, her forehead pressed to his, both of them breathing hard.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. He could feel the steady flutter of the baby moving in her belly, a small, insistent presence between them. She laughed softly, a breathless, shaky sound.
"I'm going to miss this," she murmured. "Being able to just feel like a woman. Not a vessel, not a mother. Just a woman who gets to come with a man's fingers inside her."
He pulled his hand free and brought it to her lips. She took his fingers into her mouth, tasting herself, her eyes holding his. He shivered.
"You'll always be a woman," he said. "That doesn't go away."
She smiled, but there was something sad in it. She looked down at her belly, at the child moving beneath the silk, and placed her hand over the spot where she'd felt the kick.
"He's restless this morning," she said. "He knows something's different."
"Maybe he knows his mother is happy," Winston offered.
She looked at him, and the sadness in her eyes softened into gratitude. She cupped his face in both hands and kissed him, slower this time, deeper, a kiss that was less about hunger and more about something dangerously close to affection.
"Stay with me," she whispered against his lips. "Just a little longer. Until Chet comes back. Pretend with me that this is real."
He wanted to say yes. He wanted to tell her that he would stay forever, that Chet's return was a distant storm he could weather, that he would hold her through the birth and beyond. But the words lodged in his throat, heavy with a truth he couldn't bring himself to speak.
Instead, he pulled her close and buried his face in her hair, breathing in the salt and sweat and her. She made a small, contented sound and let her weight rest against him.
The morning light crept higher across the bed, and somewhere outside a seagull cried. For now, there was just this. Just the two of them, tangled together in a room that smelled of sex and sea air, pretending that the world beyond the door didn't exist.
The quiet had settled around them like a blanket, soft and warm, and for a moment Winston let himself believe the world had contracted to this room, this woman, this fragile peace. He breathed in the salt of her skin, the faint sweetness of her shampoo, and let his eyes drift closed.
Then she stiffened.
It was not the gentle rhythm of a Braxton Hicks, not the familiar tightening he had felt earlier. This was a sudden, sharp gasp, her body going rigid in his arms, and he felt a warm rush of liquid soak through his lap, through the thin cotton of his trousers, warm and unmistakable.
"Anya?" He pulled back, alarmed.
She looked down at the growing dark stain on her dress, at the fluid pooling on the floor between them, and her face went very pale. "Oh," she said, her voice small and strange, and for the first time since he had met her, she looked genuinely afraid. "Oh, Winston. My water broke."
The words landed like a stone in still water. He felt the panic rise in his chest, cold and sharp, a sensation he had no skill for and no instinct to handle. "But you're not due for weeks," he heard himself say, the uselessness of the statement striking him even as it left his mouth.
"I know." She pressed a hand to her belly, her face tight. "He's early. He's not supposed to be here yet."
"Okay," he said, forcing his voice low, steady, though his heart was hammering against his ribs. "Okay. What do we do? What do you need?"
She looked at him, and beneath the fear he saw something else, a flicker of gratitude, of reliance. She was no longer the bold, taunting woman who had led him here. She was a woman on the edge of something enormous, and she was terrified.
"The hospital," she said. "I need to get to the hospital. There's a bag packed in the closet, I packed it weeks ago. It's by the door." She took a shaky breath. "I have my phone. I need to call my doctor. And Chet. God, Chet."
He released her carefully, his hands lingering on her arms as she swayed slightly, bracing herself on the bedpost. Her face was pale beneath her sun-kissed tan, and her breath came in shallow, uneven bursts.
"I'll get the bag," he said. "Where are the keys to the car?"
"On the hook by the kitchen door. The Volvo, it's in the garage." She pressed both hands to her belly, a low groan escaping her. "Another one. It's not like the others. I've never felt this one before."
He moved fast, his bare feet cold on the hardwood, his mind racing. The hallway was bright with morning light, the world unchanged and indifferent. He found the bag in the closet, a small navy duffel packed with neat precision, and grabbed it. The keys were where she said they'd be. He came back to find her by the bed, clutching the frame, her forehead beaded with sweat.
"Help me," she whispered. "I think I need to sit down. No, I can't sit. Walking helps. I think walking helps."
"Okay." He took her arm, steadying her. "Let's walk. Come on. Just to the door."
They moved slowly down the hall, her arm tight around his, her bare feet slapping on the wood. She was waddling, her hips rocking awkwardly with each contraction, and he could feel her whole body clench against the pain, her nails digging into his arm.
"I'm sorry," she said, her voice breaking. "I'm sorry, this isn't how I wanted it to be. I wanted more time. I wanted you to stay with me longer before this happened."
"Don't apologize," he said. "Just breathe. You're doing fine."
They reached the garage, and she stopped, pressing her hands against her knees, her breath ragged. A contraction rippled through her, visible even through the loose silk of her dress, and she cried out, a low, guttural sound that cut through the silence of the garage.
"Anya." He steadied her, one hand on her back, the other on her belly. "Look at me. Breathe with me."
She raised her eyes to his, dark and wild and full of fear. "What if something's wrong?" she whispered. "What if he's too early? What if I can't do this?"
"You can," he said firmly. "You're the strongest woman I've ever met. And he's going to be fine."
She straightened slowly, her hand pressed flat against the hard swell of her belly, and shook her head. "No. No hospital. I'm not going to the hospital."
Winston stared at her. "Anya, your water broke. You're in labor. You need a doctor, a midwife, someone who knows what they're doing."
"I have a midwife." Her voice steadied, the fear in her eyes hardening into something like resolve. "I planned a home birth. I've been planning it for months. The kit is in the hall closet, the big white box on the top shelf. Chet was supposed to be here. He was supposed to help me set everything up."
She looked around the garage as if expecting the man to materialize from the shadows. The Volvo sat cold and silent in the dim light. The bag hung limp in Winston's hand.
"You planned a home birth," he repeated, the words slow and heavy.
"Yes." She met his eyes, and there was a fierce, stubborn pride in hers. "I don't want the fluorescent lights and the strangers and the beeping machines. I want my bed, my room, my midwife. I want to bring my son into the world the way I chose." A contraction rippled through her, and she gripped the doorframe, riding it out with a low, sustained groan. When it passed, she looked at him with something like desperation. "Please. Help me get the kit. Help me do this."
He should argue. Every rational part of his mind screamed that this was madness, that a woman weeks early with her waters broken needed medical attention, that he was not qualified to do any of this. But the look in her eyes was not a request. It was a demand, wrapped in fear and hope and a faith in him that he had not earned.
"Show me where it is," he said.
She led him back inside, moving slowly, her hand braced on the wall. The hall closet was a narrow alcove off the living room, and the white box was exactly where she said it would be, a large plastic container with a red cross on the lid. He lifted it down and set it on the kitchen counter, opening it to find neatly organized layers of supplies. Sterile gloves. Umbilical cord clamps. A bulb syringe. Receiving blankets. A folded drape. A small plastic basin. There was a laminated instruction sheet on top, clinical and precise, and he snatched it up.
"Where does it say to start?" he asked.
"Read it to me," she said, lowering herself onto a kitchen chair with a grunt. "I can't think straight."
He scanned the sheet, his eyes moving fast over the bullets. "It says to wash your hands thoroughly, set up a clean area, and have the mother change into something comfortable. It says to time the contractions. And it says to call the midwife immediately if the water breaks early."
She looked up at him, and a ghost of her old smile flickered across her lips. "You sound like you're reading me a menu. It's fine, Winston. The first part is just preparation. The call to the midwife is the important part. Give me my phone."
He handed her the phone from the counter. She swiped it open and dialed, her fingers steady despite the tremor in her hands. She pressed it to her ear, and he watched her face as she listened. A beat. Another. Her brow furrowed.
"Voicemail," she said, her voice flat. She left a message, calm and measured. "Hi, it's Anya Kovacs. I'm thirty-six weeks and my water just broke. I'm having contractions, they're strong and regular. I need you to come to the cottage as soon as you get this. Please. It's time."
She ended the call and stared at the screen. Then she dialed again, a different number, and he knew without asking who it was for. She held the phone to her ear, and her face crumpled as it rang. Once. Twice. Three times.
"Chet," she said into the silence, her voice cracking. "Chet, it's me. The baby's coming. My water broke, I'm in labor, and I need you. I need you to come home. Please." A sob caught in her throat. "Please, I'm scared. I'm so scared. I know you're in a meeting, I know you're busy, but I need you to come home. I can't do this without you."
The voicemail beeped, severing the line.
She lowered the phone to her knees, her shoulders shaking. "He's not picking up. He's never not picking up. He said he'd be here for this."
Winston crossed to her and knelt before her chair, taking her cold hands in his. "He'll get the message. He'll call back. And if he doesn't, you're not doing this alone. I'm here."
She looked at him, her dark eyes swollen with tears. "You're not supposed to be here. You're supposed to be the distraction, the fun, the mistake I made before I settled into being a mother. You're not supposed to be the one helping me bring my son into the world."
"Fate has a sense of humor," he said, and he tried to smile.
She laughed despite herself, a wet, shaky sound. Then her face tightened, and she gripped his hands hard, her breath hissing through her teeth. "Another one. Winston, it's coming faster."
"Okay. Okay." He squeezed her hands, waiting for the contraction to pass. When it did, he helped her to her feet. "Let's get you into something comfortable, and then I'll set up the kit. Where does the midwife say to do this?"
"The bedroom," she said, her voice small. "The master bedroom. That's why I chose this house. The bed is low, the room is big, there's a bathroom right there in case I needed to labor in the water. I planned it all. I planned for him to be here."
"He's coming," Winston said, and he meant it. Not the midwife, not Chet. The baby. The small, restless presence that had been moving beneath her skin for weeks, the child he had felt kick through the taut globe of her belly, was coming into the world today, whether anyone was ready or not.
He helped her down the hall and into the master bedroom, his arm locked around her waist, her weight sagging against him with each step. The morning light had lost its softness, turning sharp and white as the sun climbed higher. The room was as they had left it, the sheets still tangled, the air still carrying the scent of what they had done in that bed only hours before. Now the same bed would hold something far more primal.
She stopped at the foot of the mattress, her hands braced on the wooden frame, riding out another contraction in silence. Her jaw was tight, her breath a controlled hiss through her teeth, and when it passed she let out a long, shaky exhale.
"I can't stand much longer," she admitted. "Help me get onto my side."
He eased her down, guiding her onto the mattress with careful hands, arranging the pillows beneath her head and between her knees the way he'd seen in the laminated instruction sheet. She settled onto her left side, her belly a heavy, taut mound pressing into the mattress, and let out a groan of relief as her weight left her feet.
"Jesus," she breathed. "That's better. That's so much better."
He climbed onto the bed behind her, fitting himself to the curve of her spine, his chest against her back, his arm sliding over her hip to rest on the warm globe of her belly. She wore only the emerald wrap dress, hiked up around her thighs now, damp at the hem from the water that had broken. He could feel the baby moving beneath his palm, small shifts and rolls, the child aware that something enormous was happening.
"Just breathe," he said. "I'm right here."
She hummed in acknowledgment, her hand coming to rest over his, lacing their fingers together across her stomach. For a long moment there was only the sound of her breathing, slow and deliberate, and the distant cry of gulls beyond the window. A contraction gathered, built, crested. He felt her whole body tense against him, her hand gripping his hard, her breath raking through her teeth. He rubbed slow circles over her hip and belly, pressing his palm into the tense muscle, and she rode it out in silence, her body trembling with the effort of endurance.
When it passed, she sagged against him, her head falling back onto his shoulder. "Three minutes apart," she said. "Maybe less."
"Your midwife hasn't called back?"
"No." Her voice was flat, resigned. "Her voicemail said she's out on another birth. I don't know how long she'll be." She was quiet for a moment, her fingers tightening around his. "You know what? I think we're doing this alone."
He could not argue with her, not now. There was no time to dwell on what he was not, what he did not know, what could go wrong. There was only her, and the steady rhythm of her labor, and the small life pressing down between them, demanding entry into the world.
"Then we do it alone," he said, and he meant it.
She was quiet for a long moment, her body warm and unsteady against his. He felt her breath hitch, and then she spoke, so softly he almost missed it.
"Winston?"
"Mm?"
She shifted slightly, her hips pressing back against him, and he felt the small, unmistakable pressure of her need against his groin. Her voice was thick with embarrassment, the bold, brazen woman who had pulled him into this bed fading into something younger, shyer.
"I'm..." She swallowed. "I know this is insane. You're going to think I'm insane."
"What is it?"
She turned her head just enough to look at him over her shoulder, her dark eyes caught somewhere between shame and desperate need. "I want you inside me. I know how that sounds. I'm in labor, my water's broken, I should be focused on everything else, but I can't stop thinking about it." She bit her lip. "I want to feel you inside me one more time. Before he comes. I want to feel something good when everything else is pain."
He was silent for a beat, his hand frozen on her hip. Of all the things she might have said, this was the last he expected. But he remembered the midwife's instruction sheet, the clinical language about labor progression, and the line his eyes had skimmed past without understanding: intercourse during early labor can help progress contractions and ease discomfort. The body's own hormones, the release of endorphins, the relaxation of the pelvis.
"You're not insane," he said. "You're in labor, and you're asking for what you need. I can give you that."
She let out a small, relieved sound, something caught between a laugh and a sigh. "You're sure? You're not going to think less of me?"
"I could never think less of you."
He shifted behind her, sliding his hand down her hip, along the curve of her thigh, and lifted the hem of her dress up to her waist. She was bare beneath, as she had been all morning, and he could feel the wetness there, the amniotic fluid mixed with something hotter, slicker, her own arousal rising despite everything her body was enduring. She spread her knees slightly, an invitation, a surrender.
He found her clit with his fingers and stroked it slowly, feeling her shudder against him. "Tell me if it's too much," he said. "Tell me if you need me to stop."
"I won't need you to stop."
He aligned himself behind her, his cock pressing against the slick heat of her entrance, and pushed in slowly, an inch at a time. She gasped, her hand flying back to grip his thigh, her body arching against him. She was tight, swollen with blood and labor, and the sensation of her gripping him was almost overwhelming. He held himself still, letting her adjust, his hand stroking her hip in steady, soothing circles.
"Fuck," she breathed. "God, that's good."
He began to move, slow and deep, his hips rocking against her in a rhythm that matched her breathing. She let out a long, trembling moan, her head falling back against his shoulder, her body opening to him like a flower. Each thrust pressed him deep inside her, and she met him with a small, eager push of her own, working with him, drawing him in.
"You feel so good," he whispered against her ear. "So tight. So perfect."
"Mmm. Fuck me, Winston. Slow. Keep it slow."
He obeyed, his strokes measured and deep, his pelvis grinding against her ass with each new push. His hand slipped down over her belly, feeling the taut, straining globe of it, the distant flutter of the baby moving inside her. The sensation was dizzying, the intimacy of it, the sheer strangeness of being inside her while she labored, while their bodies worked in concert toward something so much bigger than pleasure.
A contraction began to build, and he felt it ripple through her, her inner walls clenching around him with a force that made him groan. She cried out, not in pain but in something that sounded like release, her body bucking against him, her hand clawing at his thigh.
"Don't stop," she gasped. "Please, don't stop. It feels amazing. It takes the edge off. I can't explain it."
He kept moving, slow and steady, riding the wave of her contraction with her, feeling her grip him through the peak and then release. When it passed, she let out a long, shuddering sigh, her body melting into his.
"Again," she whispered. "Keep going. I need this. I need you."
He speeded up, his hips finding a faster rhythm, his hand sliding from her belly down to her clit, pressing and circling. She cried out, a sharp, surprised sound, and he felt her begin to tremble around him.
"Come for me," he said, his voice low in her ear. "Come on my cock, Anya. Let go."
She did. Her body arched, her head thrown back, a long, raw cry torn from her throat, and she came around him in a series of convulsive ripples that drew him deep inside her. He followed a moment later, spilling into her with a groan, burying his face in her hair as the pleasure crested and slowly ebbed.
For a long moment, neither of them moved. His cock still inside her, their bodies slick with sweat, her hand still gripping his thigh. Then she laughed, a soft, breathless sound, and turned her head to kiss him, slow and drugged.
"Thank you," she whispered. "For that. For everything."
He wrapped his arm around her, pulling her close, feeling the baby's insistent movement against his palm. "Anything for you."
Another contraction gathered, stronger than the ones before, and she gripped his hand hard, her face tight. But this time there was something different in her eyes. A readiness. A resolve. The creature inside her was done waiting.
"Okay," she said, her voice strained but steady. "Okay. Let's have a baby."
