Chapter 2: The Second Fracture
The hum of the cell was the only sound for what felt like days. Bruce measured time by the tremor in his own hands—the slight, persistent shake that spoke of caloric deficit and systemic shock. He had eaten nothing. The tray from the third “meal” sat untouched by the drain, a monument to a line he would not cross again. The cost of Dick’s well-being was now a calculus of pain, and Bruce was recalibrating the equation every moment.
The silence was shattered not by Marsh’s voice, but by the sharp, hydraulic hiss of the main door.
A man was shoved through the opening, stumbling into the sterile white space. The door sealed instantly behind him.
He was younger man, slight, with glasses and the pale complexion of someone who worked under fluorescent lights. He clutched a tablet to his chest like a shield.
“What the hell? Where are we?” He asked.
“The… the last thing I remember is the bus. The 7:15 to Coventry.”
Bruce observed them from his position in the corner. A civilian… A colder dread seeped into his veins. Marsh was changing the game. Introducing variables that couldn’t be factored as enemies.
On the wall screen, Dick’s cell door had also hissed open. A different man tumbled into his cell. He looked like a college kid in a Gotham University hoodie.
Victor Marsh’s voice enveloped both cells, rich with theatrical warmth.
“Gentlemen, welcome. Please, calm yourselves. You are participants in a profound therapeutic exercise. Your partners there,”
Bruce said nothing. He was analyzing, his gaze flicking between the door, and the ceiling.
“My client,” Marsh said, the word dripping with distaste, “requires a packaged product. Two individuals, prepared to exacting specifications. One from each cell must be packaged. The other will assist in the packaging. You have ten minutes to decide amongst yourselves who will be the product, and who will be the artisan. If you can’t decide before then, I’ll package all of you.”
A panel slid open in each cell. A stainless-steel cart rolled out silently on rubber wheels.
On Bruce’s cart, the tools were laid out with surgical precision: electric clippers, a bottle of clear gel, a piercing gun with two sterile barbells, a tube of lubricant, a set of articulated metal rods of varying thickness, and a collapsed, black leather-covered box about six feet long. Latches gleamed. Next to it sat a sealed package containing a large, flanged silicone plug and an identical, bulbous mouthpiece.
In Dick’s cell, the cart was identical.
“Packaging specifications,” Marsh narrated, as if guiding a tutorial. “One: full-body depilation. Leave head hair, as the package still needs to be fuckable. Two: dual nipple piercings. Three: standard gauge earlobe piercings. Four: Finger the anus to loosen it, and cause the product to ejaculate. Five: insertion of containment plugs. Six: placement in the transport casing. The process is irreversible. The packaged product will be shipped.”
Bruce would crack his knuckles as he looked at the man across from him.
Bruce didn’t crack his knuckles. The sound would have been a waste of energy he couldn’t spare. The tremor in his hands was still there, a whispering reminder of his starvation, but he focused past it, narrowing his world to the man shivering before him.
“I’m not doing this,” the man stammered, pushing his glasses up his nose. “This is insane. We have to think of another—”
Bruce was already moving. The distance between them vanished in two quick strides. He didn’t throw a theatrical punch. He snapped a straight-fingered strike into the man’s solar plexus, just hard enough to fold him in half with a stunned whoosh of stolen breath.
As the man crumpled forward, Bruce caught him by the back of the neck and drove a knee up into his descending face. He felt the cartilage in the nose give way with a wet, rubbery pop.
“You’re helping,” Bruce said, his voice a low monotone. He didn’t feel anger. This was procedure. The man was a component in Marsh’s machine, and Bruce needed to disable him with minimal damage. The man swung a wild, panicked fist. Bruce caught the wrist, twisted it behind the man’s back, and used the leverage to slam him face-first into the polymer wall. The tablet clattered to the floor.
“Stop! Please!” the man gurgled, blood streaming over his lips and chin.
“Be still,” Bruce commanded, applying precise pressure to the locked joint. “It will be worse if you fight.” He repeated it, a cold, mantra-like whisper next to the man’s ear. The man’s body went slack, not in surrender, but in the shocked recognition of absolute, effortless dominance. He began to cry, quiet, helpless sobs that hitched with each breath.
On the screen, Dick’s situation was unraveling. The kid in the hoodie hadn’t panicked. He’d sized Dick up, seen the fatigue in his stance, the way he favored the side where the belt had landed.
“Look, man, I don’t want to,” the kid said, his hands up in a placating gesture. His eyes, however, were fixed on the cart. “But one of us has to get in that box. It ain’t gonna be me.”
“We don’t have to play his game,” Dick said, his voice still rough. He assumed a defensive stance, but his movements were a fraction too slow.
The kid lunged. It wasn’t a trained attack, just a desperate, graceless tackle. Dick twisted, but the kid’s weight caught him on the hip, driving him back into the wall. Dick gasped, the impact lighting up the network of bruises on his back. He drove an elbow down, but it lacked its usual force.
They became a tangle of limbs on the floor. Dick was technically better, but he was fighting a ghost—the ghost of his own drained strength, the ghost of the violation that had hollowed him out. The kid, fueled by primal terror, was stronger.
The kid scrambled on top, pinning Dick’s wrists. He headbutted him, a clumsy, brutal smash of forehead to bridge of nose. Dick saw stars, a bright flash of pain. His vision swam.
“Get off!” Dick snarled, bucking, but the kid held on, raining down short, hammering punches to Dick’s ribs.
In his cell, Bruce watched this as he efficiently stripped the sobbing man of his clothes. He did it with detached, clinical speed. He pushed the man onto his stomach on the floor, a knee in the center of his back. He picked up the electric clippers.
The whirring buzz was obscenely loud. Bruce started at the chest, shearing a wide, clean path through the hair. The man flinched at the vibration, at the tickle of falling hair on his skin. He wept openly.
“Please, I have a family,” he mumbled into the floor.
Bruce didn’t answer. He worked methodically, moving over the shoulders, down the back. The pale, vulnerable skin was revealed in patches. He turned the man over. The man shielded his face with his hands, his body shaking. Bruce moved the clippers over his groin, his legs. The air grew thick with the smell of ozone and the faint, clean scent of shorn hair.
On screen, the kid had finally wrestled Dick onto his stomach. He sat on the small of Dick’s back, grinding his weight into the fresh welts. Dick cried out, the sound sharp and pained.
“Stay down!” the kid yelled, fumbling for the clippers. He turned them on. The buzz seemed to energize him, to make it real.
Dick roared, a raw sound of fury and humiliation. He heaved, almost throwing the kid off. The kid responded by jamming a knee into the back of Dick’s thigh, a nerve cluster. Dick’s leg went numb. The fight bled out of him, replaced by a grinding, helpless exertion.
Bruce finished the depilation. The man lay naked and shivering, looking strangely younger, exposed. Bruce picked up the piercing gun and a barbell. He swabbed a nipple with the gel. The man flinched violently.
“Don’t move,” Bruce said. His voice offered no comfort, only a promise of greater pain if disobeyed.
He positioned the gun. The click-punch sound was metallic and final. The man screamed, a short, sharp sound. A dot of blood welled around the steel. Bruce repeated the process on the other side with the same dispassionate efficiency. Then the earlobes. Click-punch. Click-punch.
In the other cell, the kid was doing a messy, violent imitation of the process. He’d sheared Dick’s head haphazardly, leaving tufts and bald patches. He was now fighting to get the gel on Dick’s nipple, smearing it clumsily as Dick kept twisting his torso.
“Hold still, you fucker!” the kid screamed, panic edging into his voice. He punched Dick in the kidney. Dick’s body arched, a silent scream on his lips. The kid fumbled with the gun, pressed it against the pebbled skin, and fired.
Dick’s whole body seized. The kid, emboldened, grabbed the other nipple and did it again.
Bruce moved to the next step. He lubricated his fingers, his own hands steady. This was just another step. The man on the floor whimpered, begging into the polymer. Bruce worked methodically, his face a mask of absolute concentration. He was not here. He was monitoring vital signs, applying pressure, achieving the required, grotesque result. The man beneath him shuddered, a purely physical reaction, his cries dying into stunned, hyperventilating silence.
When it was done, Bruce wiped his hands on the man’s discarded shirt. He picked up the large silicone plug.
On the screen, the kid was struggling with the same step. He was brutal, hurried, causing Dick to gasp and choke against the floor. Dick had stopped shouting. He was conserving, his eyes open and fixed on the wall, far away. He was going somewhere else.
Bruce inserted the plug, then the mouthpiece. He did it smoothly, like assembling a complex piece of equipment. He unfolded the black leather casing. It was lined with padded restraints. He lifted the compliant, broken man and placed him inside. He fastened the wrist cuffs, the ankle cuffs, a strap across the forehead. He closed the lid. The latches clicked shut, one after another, a sound like teeth locking.
In Dick’s cell, the kid finally got the plugs in, his hands shaking. He manhandled Dick, who was limp now, into the other casing. Dick didn’t help. He didn’t resist. He was a weight. The kid fumbled with the latches, sweating, until the last one sealed.
Both cells held a sealed black box.
The doors hissed open simultaneously. Two of Marsh’s guards walked in, collected the carts, and took hold of the packaged cases. They wheeled them out without a word. The doors sealed again, leaving Bruce alone in his white cell, and leaving Dick’s cell seemingly empty.
Victor Marsh’s sigh was one of deep satisfaction.
“Beautiful work, Bruce. You overcame your aversion. You mastered the variable. You performed the procedure with remarkable focus. Your partner, however… he was mastered. He was packaged. He is now product. Observe.”
Dick’s screen flickered. It showed a different room, a loading dock. The kid from Dick’s cell was being handed a wad of cash by a guard, then shoved toward an open door, blinking in sudden daylight. He was free.
The camera panned to the black case being loaded by two workers into the back of a nondescript van. The doors slammed shut.
The feed cut back to Bruce’s cell. His own screen now showed the van’s interior, a shaky cell phone feed. The case was strapped in place. A hand entered the frame, unlocked the latches, and opened the lid.
Inside, Dick stared up, unblinking, the mouthpiece stretching his lips, the metal glinting in his nipples. His eyes were the only thing that was his. They burned with a fire that hadn’t been extinguished, only banked and buried under layers of violation.
“He resisted until the end, in his way,” Marsh whispered. “But he failed. He is now a transaction. Your lesson for today: in my world, control is the only morality. You exercised it. He lost it. Remember that when the hunger really sets in tomorrow.”
The screen went black.
Bruce stood alone in the perfect silence. The ghost of the clippers buzzed in his ears. The image of Dick in that case, being driven away, was now part of the foundation. Another broken thing.
He slowly sat down, his back against the wall where he had been violated. He closed his eyes. He began to plan around this new, horrific fact.
The plan was simple: endure, observe, escape, retrieve. But the image of the van doors closing eroded the simplicity like acid. Endurance was a hollow strategy when the thing you were enduring was the loss of your partner. Observation was useless if all it showed you was the distance growing.
He opened his eyes. The sterile whiteness of the cell felt like a vacuum, sucking the heat from his blood.
He stood up, the movement costing him. The tremor in his hands was a constant now, a physiological betrayal. He ignored it. He walked to the center of the room, directly under the light panel where he knew the speaker and camera were embedded.
“Marsh.”
His voice wasn’t a shout. It was a low, resonant force thrown against the polymer, a tone that usually made armed men take an involuntary step back. Here, it was just sound.
Silence.
“I know you’re listening.” Bruce said, his eyes fixed on a faint seam in the ceiling. “The lesson is learned. You proved your point. Now, we renegotiate.”
A soft chuckle filtered down. “Renegotiate? Bruce, you have nothing to bargain with. You are calories and defiance in a white room. That is your entire portfolio.”
“You want your magnum opus.” Bruce’s words were clipped, relentless. “You want to break Batman. That’s your real product. Not whatever client bought a packaged Robin. He’s a tool to get to me. So use him. Bring him back.”
“And why would I do that? The separation is itself a fascinating pressure. The not-knowing. The guilt.”
Bruce took a slow breath, the oxygen feeling thin. “Because breaking someone who’s already given up isn’t art. It’s just dissection. He’s in a box. He’s already gone somewhere I can’t reach. Your leverage disappears if I believe he’s lost.” He took a step closer to the wall, as if to speak directly into it. “You get him back here, in front of me, and your leverage is restored. One hundred percent. Then you can really begin.”
The silence that followed was different. It was the silence of consideration.
“An interesting proposal,” Marsh said, his voice sliding into a clinical register. “You’re bargaining for the reinstatement of your primary stimulus. You acknowledge that his suffering is the engine of your own.”
“I’m telling you your experiment is flawed,” Bruce countered, his fist clenching at his side. The memory of the silicone plug, the glint of steel in nipples, fueled the fire in his gut. “Fix it.”
A longer pause. Bruce could almost hear the man stroking his chin, delighting in the turn.
“A correction, then,” Marsh said, decisively. “Very well. The van will be diverted. It will return to the facility. The packaging… will remain in place. However you are going to test the product for a live audience. It will be your job to show all my clients how to break a man down into a sex object. There will be a few days where Dick will hung up like a slab of meat, and I will personally feed him and discipline him. During that time you will be given access to a gym and all the testing equipment that you will use to break him.
If he does not fully submit to you, he will be deemed a failed product and like all other failed products will be scrapped for parts. If he does, I’ll actually let you go, let you return to your normal lives again. However, things will never be the same between you, my actual goal”
Bruce’s blood went cold. He’d asked for this. He’d demanded it. The victory was ashes.
“The terms,” Marsh continued, “are absolute. Do you accept these revised parameters?”
The words hung in the antiseptic air. Penetrative act. Packaged product. The clinical terms made it worse. Bruce saw the kid’s hands fumbling with the latch. He saw the hollow look in Dick’s eyes as the lid closed.
This was the cost. Not of food, but of hope. A different kind of starvation.
“If I do it,” Bruce said, his voice gravel, “and you don’t let us go, I will hurt your clients.”
“My, my,” Marsh crooned. “You are learning to negotiate. Very well. How perfectly archetypal. Do we have an accord?”
Bruce looked at the blank screen where he’d last seen Dick’s eyes. He’d gotten him back. Into a deeper hell.
“We do.”
“Excellent. The vehicle is turning around now. Prepare yourself, Bruce. Your artistry is required.”
The speaker went dead.
Bruce turned and leaned his back against the wall, sliding down until he sat on the floor. He dropped his head into his hands. The taste of latex from the guard’s fingers ghosted across his tongue. The sensation of his own traitorous climax replayed in his nerves, a shameful echo.
He was going to have to break his partner, and confront his deep seeded desires infront of an audience.
