Chapter 2: Building Tension

I hate to admit it, but my husband is a doofus.

A dear, darling, hunky doofus, but really... well, let me explain.

The Short Estate sprawled lazily on the gentle hills of the English countryside. The enormous manor house had been built sometime in the 1500s—possibly earlier, who knows. Our family had called it home for the better part of five centuries.

Writing in her diary Lady Mary did every morning.

The ink-stained pages spoke of the mundane, the extraordinary, and the comical. What they rarely contained were entries about David. Lord Short, to be precise—her husband, a sweet fellow, who had not a bone of leadership in his body despite being a viscount.

Mary slammed the diary shut, an idea forming in her mind. It was time to take matters into her own hands. She glanced at David, his brow furrowed over spreadsheets; the accounts were maddening him, as usual.

David was the nicest bloke you'd ever met, but no one in their right mind would say he was intelligent, innovative, or visionary. "Oh, bother," she sighed. She patted his hand gently.

"David, dear." She played with her pearl necklace. "Would you be so kind as to show me the accounts for the estate?"

He blinked at her, then broke into a sheepish grin. "I-I tried, Mary, I truly did." He blushed, shoving the ledger back across the desk at her.

"But there's just something about these numbers that doesn't add-up."

Mary hid a smile, silently reveling in her victory. She didn't enjoy having to prod her spouse through their responsibilities, but desperate times called for desperate measures.

Mary eased herself into the chair, and her skirts swished around her despite the best attempts to keep them in place, while her mind eagerly dissected the numbers before her. Each number painted a grim story; a picture of decay and the mismanaged Short Estate.

With a gentle sigh, Mary dipped the quill into the inkwell, her mind already formulating a plan. If that clodhopper couldn't take care of their legacy, then so be it—she'd whip this estate worthy of the Short name.

And David? Well, she'd have to handle him differently.

“My dear, while I appreciate your best efforts, I believe it’s time to try a new approach to handling the estate.” She chose her words delicately, weighing the iron in her voice.

”Let's say, for every mistake you make in managing the estate, I will choose one item of your clothing to replace with women’s wear.”

David gaped at her, eyes as wide as full moons. ”You wouldn't, Mary?”

A raised brow was her only response.

”A-and what if I refuse?” he croaked, gripping his cravat as if it were a noose.

Oh, but she would. Mary leaned back and folded her hands across her chest, eyes still holding his. "Remember the time you accidentally signed off on half the estate's budget for the acquisition of a new mare?" A corner of her mouth quirked up—how could he forget?

"If I recall, that led to you wearing stockings that very evening."

David’s face turned crimson, and he averted his gaze, hand unconsciously moving up to touch where his garters would be, were he wearing any.

The notion of female clothing became increasingly real with her every word—as if a mysterious force squeezed his chest, making it hard to breathe.

Mary held the power, and the look in her emerald eyes made no effort to deny it. She had the intelligence and the resources to turn the estate around. What she didn’t have, apparently, was the patience to watch David’s blunders bring their legacy to its knees.

He looked back at his wife, her raven curls cascading down her shoulders. How could someone so alluring be so terrifying?

“So as I will run the estate. You can be the lady of the manor. Which means you have to dress as I had to do. Plus no excuse I have told your maid and butler of my plans. So by next week you’ll be in a dress and all the lace that needed.” she declared, her tone leaving no room for argument.

David squeaked, a sound he never thought himself capable of making. “B-but how will I explain this to everyone?” he stammered.

Mary arched a perfectly sculpted brow, a faint smile gracing her lips. “Well, dear, I already anticipated that. I informed all the staff that when they find you in women’s clothing, it’s merely a new tactic in your ongoing efforts to improve the estate.”

David’s jaw dropped.

Surely no one would believe such an absurd story. But the determined gleam in Mary’s eyes said otherwise.

What had begun as a playful threat had morphed into something more substantial. Something disconcerting—even thrilling, dare he think.

His breath hitched as the corset-wearing reality tightened around him, a cage of silk and lace. This was it. A new era in the Short legacy.

In the days that followed, Mary held true to her word. Flustered by his growing collection of women’s fashion, David struggled to adapt.

Every day brought a new ensemble—petticoats, stockings, garters, and the inexplicable bonnets. He had never imagined so many laces could exist in this world.

David felt his resistance crumble as he submitted to the allure of silk and lace. The feminine attire seduced him, awakening an unfamiliar yearning he tried to suppress.

Yet Mary watched her husband from afar as he explored his newfound femininity, carefully tracking his progress—or lack thereof—in managing the ever-pressing estate matters.

Each day, they were faced with new challenges, new developments, and a sensual dynamic that blurred the line between playful irritation and genuine intimacy.

With each passing day, the manor household adapted to its new identity. The staff became accustomed to serving a "lady" viscount, while Mary took on the role of the lady of the house, managing the estate with grace, resolve, and unmatched intelligence.

As the weeks rolled by, Mary turned the Short Estate into a well-oiled machine, finding ways to increase efficiency and productivity without compromising quality and luxury.

In a rather unexpected turn of events, David slowly and reluctantly began to find solace in his extravagant attire. He discovered the soothing tranquility found behind womanhood’s masks—beauty, fragility, and submission.

David, who had once rolled his eyes at the thought of hoops and petticoats, now cherished what they represented—grace, poise, and resilience.

The estate's staff, initially shocked by David's transformation, soon recognized the positive impact of Mary's intervention. Productivity surged, expenses plummeted, and the manor hummed with activity.

Beneath it all, the marital dynamic metamorphosed. Tensions simmered as Mary's hold on her frustrations weakened.

There was only so much she could take before snapping, the elegant viscountess reduced to a fiery woman unleashing her fury upon her husband.

Mary slammed her fist onto the desk, causing David to flinch. "How many times must I repeat myself?" she snapped, dark hair clinging fiercely to her shoulders. "You will learn, truly learn, to manage the estate, or my ever-growing wardrobe will find a permanent home in your closet!"

David gazed at his strikingly beautiful wife, eyes reddened by the threat of tears.

He knew she only wanted the best for the family, and for the Short Estate to prosper once more. Yet he couldn’t quell the anger burning in his chest, the absurdity of his situation threatening to consume him.

“How can you insist that I wear these things? That I become some blasted wife, while you, my lady, manage what should be my domain?” His words tumbled out, unedited and irate.

Mary looked at him, green eyes flashing with determination, a hint of sadness lingering within them.

"Think of it as another role to play, David. This time, we're learning from each other," she finally said, attempting to alleviate the tension in the room.

Tension, however, remained palpable on the Short Estate. The walls of the ancient manor seemed to hold their breath, anticipating what would unfold in the following days.

David considered Mary's words as she left the room, her elegant skirts rustling behind her. A sudden realization struck as he sank into his chair.

Their aristocratic lineage molded him to become the face of authority, leadership, and intelligence. Yet neither of them could have anticipated an unexpected turn events would take.

David, his pride bruised, wrestled with the femininity imposed upon him. Slowly he began to appreciate this uncharted territory—one where he could shed the pressures of managing their centuries-old enterprise.

In the midst of this conflict, his eyes regularly darted toward Mary—her confidence emanating from within.

Two Victorian women facing each other in the living room both wearing a Victorian green outfit

: One of them, the dominant wife, with a strong disposition and a growing desire for her husband, and the other, her submissive spouse, dressed in elegant garments yet searching for his place within the matrimonial hierarchy. The role reversal began to shift an underlying energy between them that permeated the stately halls of the manor.

Meanwhile, life at the Short Estate continued in its rhythmic cycle of aristocratic celebration along with the mundane duties inherent to such a legacy.

The sprawling, ornate stone manor housed this unique dynamic, where secret encounters kindled along the vast corridors, between ancient oak doors, and in the overgrown gardens.

With each sunrise, Lady Mary awoke to take on the empire her husband could not manage—her elegant corsets, frilly dresses, and an air of dominance firmly in place. The meticulously calculated discipline that now ruled her world propelled her into confidence and authority.

In contrast, David—viscount by birth—felt adrift in a lace-filled labyrinth.

The elegant gowns whispering tales of centuries-old femininity overwhelmed the very essence of David's identity, shaking his core beliefs in the role he knew and the role his wife demanded he embrace.

Day after day, he succumbed to Mary's request, donning frilly garments and makeup. Yet, the bewildering transformation sparked an intriguing exploration of his own sensuality. Little by little—each brush stroke on his face, each delicate lace caressing his skin—David allowed the feminine touch to grow on him.

Lost in this world of silk, taffeta, and velvet, he discovered the tender, alluring sensuality hiding in the shadows of his austere world. And so did Mary, albeit unknowingly.

Aware of her husband's growing embrace of what was once reserved for women, Mary couldn't shake off a curious stirring of desire. A fluttering heat that caressed her senses whenever she beheld him draped in delicate fabric, blossomed within the folds of her own being.

She had never thought of herself as a woman of insatiable cravings, but her newfound strength and independence ignited a different kind of longing— a deep, simmering well of fiery desire. Mary could not deny that the tantalizing vision of her husband in such a state was something she could never have imagined.

Each day, he transformed into a more elegant and exquisite creature. She couldn't help but acknowledge the inexplicable allure of his garb—how it brought grace to his every step.

With her husband dressed more like her than himself, something dormant within her was resurrected. Desire. How long had it been since she last genuinely craved him, the man who once wore and commanded his tails and breeches?

One evening, she found her long-forgotten fan.
