Chapter 22: The Proposal
The moving van was a grotesque steel beetle parked illegally in the loading zone, hemorrhaging cardboard boxes onto the sidewalk. Charly stood amidst the chaos, holding a crate labeled NAT - FRAGILE/BLUNT OBJECTS, wondering what the hell was inside. He felt the phantom ache of his lower back, a preview of the day's labor. The sun was already high, a brassy coin in a cloudless sky.
Nat emerged from the building's lobby, not with a box, but with a tall, potted fiddle-leaf fig tree. She wore cutoff denim shorts and a black tank top, her pink hair tied up in a messy knot. Sweat glistened on her collarbone. "Don't just stand there looking constipated, Charlie-boy. Grab an end."
Sara came out next, wrestling a rolled-up rug. Her face was flushed with effort and something else—anticipation, maybe, or anxiety. "The elevator's going to be our nemesis today," she panted, dropping her end of the rug. She caught Charly's eye and offered a tight, fleeting smile.
Their apartment, once a sanctuary for two, now hummed with the disquiet of becoming a habitat for three. Boxes formed a labyrinth in the living room. Nat’s belongings were a physical invasion: vibrant abstract paintings leaning against the neutral walls, a hefty vintage suitcase filled with what sounded like clinking glass, a collection of thrift-store lamps with fringed shades.
Nat stood in the center of the storm, hands on her hips. "Okay. Where's my dungeon?"
Sara, unpacking kitchenware, didn't look up. "Your room is the guest room. You have your own bathroom."
"My dungeon," Nat repeated, a playful edge to her voice. "I need a space for... rigging. Wall anchors. You know."
Charly felt a jolt. Rigging. The word conjured images of complex knots, suspension, a body in elegant distress. His mouth went dry.
Sara finally met Nat's gaze. "We'll discuss anchor points another time. For now, let's focus on getting your bed assembled before midnight."
The day unfolded in a rhythm of unpacking, decisions, and territorial negotiations. Where would Nat's books go? (Mixed with theirs, she insisted, "to fuck with your alphabetical system.") Could her industrial-strength blender live on the counter? ("It's for more than smoothies, but sure.") Each settled item felt like a stitch sewing her into the fabric of their lives.
As the sun began to dip, painting the living room in exhausted gold, they collapsed onto the sofa amid the half-unpacked debris. Nat had changed into soft gray sweats and an old band t-shirt. She looked, for the first time, like she lived there.
Sara brought out a bottle of wine and three glasses. "To not killing each other on day one," she toasted, her voice weary but warm.
They clinked glasses. The silence that followed was comfortable, filled with the faint, scratching melody from the old record player Charly had set up earlier.
Nat swirled her wine, her eyes moving between them. "So," she said, her tone shifting from casual to focused. "The elephant in the room. Or rather, the lack of an elephant named Ben."
Charly stiffened. Sara took a deliberate sip.
"You had your baptism by fire. Or by dick," Nat continued, unflinching. "And it went sideways at the end. He tried to make it a power play, a humiliation gig. You," she pointed at Charly with her wine glass, "got the full, unfiltered hit of the fantasy, and then got handed a mop. And you," she turned to Sara, "had to be the emergency brake. That's a fuckton of labor for one night."
"How do you know all that?" Charly asked, his voice quiet.
"Because you texted me 'survived' and then went radio silent for forty-eight hours. The subtext was practically screaming." She set her glass down on a box marked MISC. "The fantasy is clean. The reality is messy. Ben was a caricature. He was playing a role he read about online. You two aren't characters. You're architects. Or you're trying to be." She leaned forward, her elbows on her knees. "The move-in isn't just about convenience. It's about integration. It's about building something that can't be blown apart by one guy's ego."
Sara studied Nat's face. "What are you suggesting?"
"I'm suggesting we tear down the fourth wall. Right now. No audience. No performance. Just the three of us figuring out the wiring." Her gaze was electric, moving from Sara to Charly and back. "You're terrified that this," she gestured around the room at the boxes, "is a mistake. That you've invited a tornado into your dollhouse. And you," she looked at Charly, "are terrified that you're not enough. That you're just a spectator in your own marriage. Both of you are wrong."
The accuracy was a laser cut. Charly felt seen, exposed. Sara's jaw tightened.
Nat stood up. She walked over to the record player, lifted the needle mid-song. The sudden silence was profound. She turned back to them. "I'm not here to be your live-in slut, Sara. And I'm not here to be your fantasy dispenser, Charly." She pulled her t-shirt over her head in one smooth motion and dropped it on the floor. Her breasts were bare, pale and full in the golden light. She hooked her thumbs into the waistband of her sweatpants and pushed them down, stepping out of them. She stood before them, completely naked, unselfconscious. A small, intricate tattoo of a geometric snake wrapped around her left thigh. "I'm here to be a part of whatever this is. To feel it. All of it. With both of you."
Sara exhaled, a slow release of held breath. She looked at Charly, her eyes asking a silent question. He gave a barely perceptible nod. Sara stood, her movements deliberate. She reached for the hem of her own shirt and pulled it off. Then her jeans. Soon, she stood beside Nat, just as bare, her skin glowing in the twilight.
Charly's heart hammered against his ribs. This wasn't a performance for him. This was something else entirely. He stood, his fingers fumbling with his buttons. Nat watched him, her expression serene. Sara watched him too, but her eyes held a challenge, an invitation.
When he was naked, he felt absurdly vulnerable. The cool evening air touched his skin, raising goosebumps.
Nat closed the distance first. She didn't go to Charly. She went to Sara. She cupped Sara's face in her hands and kissed her, deeply, slowly. Charly watched, transfixed, as his wife's hands came up to tangle in Nat's pink hair, as Sara moaned softly into the other woman's mouth. It was an act of pure, unmediated connection. No script. No audience. Just sensation.
After a long moment, Nat broke the kiss and turned to Charly. She took his hand, her fingers warm and firm, and placed it on Sara's waist. Her skin was hot. "Touch your wife," Nat whispered, her breath against his ear. "She's right here."
His hands slid over Sara's hips, pulling her against him. He kissed her, tasting the wine and, faintly, Nat on her lips. Sara kissed him back with a hungry, desperate intensity he hadn't felt in weeks. It was a reclamation.
Nat moved behind Sara, her body pressing close. She kissed Sara's shoulder, her neck, while her hands slid around to cup Sara's breasts. Sara arched back against Nat, her head falling onto Nat's shoulder, her eyes closed in pleasure.
"Look at her," Nat murmured to Charly over Sara's shoulder. Her fingers pinched Sara's nipples, rolling them until they were hard peaks. "She's not leaving. She's right here, between us. You feel her?"
Charly did. He felt the heat of Sara, the soft give of her skin under his palms. He felt the solid presence of Nat behind her, anchoring them both. He kissed Sara again, his hand drifting down her stomach, through the coarse hair between her legs. She was soaking wet.
Nat’s hand joined his, their fingers tangling in Sara's slickness. "She's dripping," Nat breathed into Sara's ear, her voice rough. "Feel that, Charly? That's for you. That's for us."
Sara cried out as their combined fingers found her clit. Her hips rocked against their hands, seeking more pressure, more friction. "Please," she gasped, not specifying to whom.
Nat guided them. "On the floor. Now."
They sank down onto the rug, a tangle of limbs. Sara lay back, pulling Charly on top of her. He entered her in one smooth stroke, and she gasped, her legs wrapping around his back. Her cunt clenched around him, hot and tight and perfect.
Nat knelt beside them, watching for a moment, her own hand sliding between her legs. She was already wet, her folds glistening in the dim light. "Fuck her," Nat commanded, her voice low and hoarse. "Fuck your wife. Show her she's yours."
Charly obeyed, setting a deep, driving rhythm. Sara met every thrust, her nails digging into his back. But Nat wasn't just watching. She leaned over, her pink hair falling around her face like a curtain, and took Sara's mouth in another searing kiss. Sara whimpered into it, her hips bucking.
Nat broke the kiss, her lips trailing down Sara's body. She took one of Sara's nipples into her mouth, sucking hard, then biting down gently. Sara screamed, her body bowing off the rug.
Then Nat shifted, moving lower. She positioned herself between Sara's splayed legs, right below where Charly was buried inside her. Nat looked up at Charly, her eyes gleaming with intent. "Keep fucking her," she said.
Nat’s tongue found Sara's clit, licking with firm, broad strokes. Sara's reaction was immediate and violent. She shuddered, her internal muscles clamping down on Charly's cock in a pulsing vise. "Oh God, Nat, yes, right there!" she sobbed.
Charly watched, mesmerized, as Nat's head moved, her pink hair brushing against his thrusting abdomen. He could feel the vibrations of her moans against his skin where it met Sara's. Sara was being filled and licked, fucked and worshiped, all at once. Her pleasure was a visible, audible thing, a force rippling through the room.
Nat’s fingers joined her tongue, two slipping inside Sara alongside Charly's cock. The stretch made Sara cry out, a sound of pure, overwhelmed ecstasy. Nat fucked her with her fingers in rhythm with Charly's thrusts, her mouth never leaving Sara's clit.
"Look at her come," Nat growled, her words muffled against Sara's flesh. "Look at your wife fucking come on your cock and my tongue."
It was too much. Sara shattered. Her orgasm tore through her, a series of frantic, clenching spasms that milked Charly relentlessly. He held on, driving into her through the convulsions, until he couldn't anymore. With a broken shout, he came, pulsing deep inside her, his vision whitening at the edges.
He collapsed beside her, spent. Nat didn't stop. She kept licking, gentler now, coaxing Sara through the aftershocks until Sara pushed her away, oversensitive and gasping.
In the heavy, sweat-scented quiet, Nat crawled up Sara's body and kissed her softly on the lips. Then she turned to Charly. Her mouth was slick with Sara's arousal. She kissed him, letting him taste his wife on her tongue. The act was profoundly intimate, a sharing that went beyond flesh.
They lay there on the floor, a spent, panting heap of limbs and warmth. The last of the sunset bled from the sky, leaving the room in deep blue shadow.
Nat was the first to speak, her voice raspy. "See?" she said quietly, her head resting on Sara's stomach. "No triangles. No straight lines. Just a circuit." She reached out, her hand finding Charly's in the dark, their fingers slick and sticky as they intertwined. "We're all connected."
Charly felt it then, a fragile, humming truth in the spent quiet. It wasn't ownership or spectatorship. It was a current, flowing through all three of them, raw and alive and terrifyingly real.
A phone buzzed, sharp and intrusive in the silence. Sara groped for it on the floor beside the discarded clothes. She squinted at the screen. "It's David from my studio," she murmured, her voice still thick. "The team meet-up. Tomorrow at that new bar. I'd completely forgotten."
She looked from Charly to Nat, her expression shifting from post-coital languor to mild panic. "What do I tell him? Do I… do I bring you both?"
Nat propped herself up on an elbow, a slow, feline smile spreading across her face. "Fuck yes, you do," she said. "Let's see how your colleagues handle a live circuit."
