Chapter 1: The Club
"Just forget about her, Emma. You're better off without her." Rachel's voice is soft but determined as we push through the dense crowd at Club Envy. Though she's a full head taller than me, her long, curly brown hair bounces around her shoulders, mirroring my own restless energy.
I force a smile and let her lead me past the thrumming speakers, the heavy bass of the music pounding in time with my heartbeat.
A flash of neon lights illuminates my face as I take a swig of my drink, the liquid burning down my throat like a fire. I've been here before - in the midst of a crowd, surrounded by the desperate pulse of humanity - but tonight, I don't feel like myself.
We reach the dance floor, and Rachel's eyes light up like she's just struck gold. "Come on, Em. Loosen up a little. Dance with me." Her laughter is infectious, and I can't help but feel a tiny spark ignite inside me.
I've been feeling so numb lately, but with Rachel's encouragement, I find myself swaying to the beat. I let out a whoop and shut my eyes, letting the music wash over me.
As the sweat trickles down my forehead, my hair sticks to my neck, and I feel a little more alive. After a few minutes, I start to feel more like my old self again, and I open my eyes to see Rachel grinning at me ear to ear.
But then I see her. Another woman, standing just a few feet away from me.
She's tall and breathtakingly beautiful, with short blonde hair that sparkles under the neon lights. Her piercing blue eyes lock onto mine, and for a moment, my heart catches in my throat.
I've never felt anything like this before. I rush headlong into the throng of dancing bodies, wanting to get closer to her. When we finally collide, our arms entwined, I feel an electric spark pass between us.
"I'm Bre," she says, her lips curling into a smile that makes my heart skip a beat.
"I'm Emma," I shout back, trying to make myself heard over the pounding music.
"I couldn't help but notice you out here on the dance floor," she says, her voice low and sultry. "You look like you need someone to show you a good time."
Her words ignite something inside me, and I can feel the heat rising to my cheeks. "I could use a little excitement in my life," I admit, feeling bold.
Bre's eyes light up, and she grabs my hand, leading me deeper into the dancing crowd.
She twirls me around, her laughter echoing through the club, and I can't help but laugh in response.
"I've never met anyone like you before," she says, her breath tickling my ear. "You're so fierce and unapologetic. I like it."
I feel a stirring of excitement deep in my core, something I haven't felt in a long time. "I could say the same about you," I admit, my voice low.
Bre smiles, her eyes gleaming.
"I'm glad you think so," she says, her voice filled with a seductive allure that leaves me feeling slightly out of breath.
We continue to dance, our bodies moving in sync with the bass-heavy beat of the music. I feel lighter than I have in months, feeling a freedom and abandon that I hadn't realized I'd been missing. Bre moves close to me, and I can feel her warm breath on my neck, sending shivers down my spine.
I lean in, my lips brushing against her ear as I whisper, "What now?"
"Let's get out of here," she says, a playful grin spreading across her face.
I hesitate for just a second, glancing over at Rachel. But she's busy dancing with a group of people, completely absorbed in the music. I know she'll understand if I slip away for a while.
Bre takes my hand, her grip firm and confident, and leads me out of the club.
