Chapter 1: The Dungeon
---
The first thing I noticed was the light. Not the warm, flickering glow of my 27-inch monitor, but something harsh and invasive, like a flashbulb going off inside my skull. My eyelids twitched, sticky with sleep, and I tried to roll over—only to find that my bed had vanished. The sheets, the pillow, the faint scent of Doritos and Mountain Dew—all gone. My fingers clawed at nothing, my nails scraping against cold, damp stone.
*What the hell?*
I forced my eyes open.
A glowing rectangle hovered in the air in front of me, its edges pulsing with an unnatural blue light. The words *QUEST ACCEPTED: SURVIVE AND ESCAPE THE DUNGEON* burned into my retinas. My brain short-circuited. This definitely wasn’t my room.
Ignoring the words in the window, I stand up, my body aching from the cold floor beneath me. The glowing quest prompt flickered, taunting me. I swiped at it like I was closing a browser tab—*dismiss*—and the rectangle vanished.
*Oh, come on.*
I’d watched enough isekai anime to know this was bad. The hero always woke up in some dungeon or another, and then—*bam*—some monster attacks, killing a party member to show that the situation is serious.
I wasn’t about to wait around for that. My fingers twitched, and suddenly a translucent panel materialized in front of me, displaying my character sheet. *Level 1 Rogue. Agility: 12. Strength: 5. Intelligence 10. Willpower 3. Skills: Stealth 10. Weakness: Cowardice.* Great. Just great. The numbers didn’t lie—I was built for running, not fighting. And cowardice?! I mean... it's kind of true but did they really need to put it in print like that?
A low growl rumbled from somewhere in the darkness. My pulse spiked. The shadows seemed to writhe, shifting unnaturally along the walls. I pressed myself flat against the damp stone, my bare skin prickling with cold. The growl came again, closer this time. My breath hitched. *Think, Mike. Think.* The quest prompt had said *escape*, not *fight*. I could do that.
Then—the whispers started. A feminine voice, soft as silk, curled through the darkness. *"Lost lamb. So innocent."* It slithered from the shadows themselves.
I swallowed hard. "Wh-who's there?" I inquired, my voice cracking. But the voice didn’t answer. Instead, the whispers twisted into something sharper, more urgent—*"Behind you, lamb. Hide."*
I didn’t think. I moved. My body reacted before my mind could catch up. On instinct, I pressed myself into the narrow crevice between two jagged stalagmites. The air carried the stench of damp fur and rotting meat. A second later, something *scratched* against the stone where I’d just been sitting—a gnarled, clawed hand, followed by a hunched, green-skinned figure with yellowed fangs bared in a snarl. A goblin. Of *course* it was a goblin.
It sniffed the air, its beady eyes darting around the chamber. My heart hammered against my ribs. *Stealth 10. Agility 12. Strength 5.*
The numbers flashed in my vision like a taunt. But cowardice didn’t mean stupidity. My hand closed around a jagged chunk of fallen masonry, and I hurled it down the hall with all the force my pathetic strength stat could muster. It clattered against the stone, the sound echoing like a gunshot in the suffocating dark. The goblin’s head snapped toward the noise, its yellowed fangs glinting in the dim light. Perfect.
I didn’t wait to see if it took the bait. My body moved before my brain could second-guess it—slick, silent, the way I’d practiced in a hundred stealth games. The shadows swallowed me whole, my bare feet barely making a sound against the damp stone. The whispers slithered after me, guiding me deeper into the labyrinth.
*"Left, Young Hero."* The voice whispered, guiding me deeper into the labyrinth. *"Hide now. I will guide you."* I pressed myself into a jagged crevice, barely daring to breathe as a goblin female slunk past, her claws clicking against the stone. Her nostrils flared, sniffing the air, but she saw nothing. My Stealth skill held, rendering me invisible to her beady, bloodshot eyes. She muttered something in a guttural tongue, her voice like wet gravel, before vanishing into the dark.
The moment she was gone the voice returned, softer now, almost amused. *"You are clever. But you will not escape without help."*
I exhaled sharply. "Who are you?"
A pause. Then—*"A guide... A prisoner. There was a time when I was worshipped. Now... I'm all but forgotten. Free me. Allow me to guide you, little lamb. I can grant my servants power. Not the weak, flickering magic of this age, but the true strength of a conqueror. The power to crush my enemies before they even see you coming."* Her voice was velvet darkness and carried power. I felt an overwhelming urge to obey. I didn’t answer. My fingers brushed against something cold and hard in the shadows—a skeletal hand, still clutching a rusted dagger. The bones were yellowed with age, the fingers curled in a permanent death grip. And around its neck, half-buried in the dirt, was a silver collar, its surface etched with glowing runes that pulsed like a slow, mocking heartbeat.
My breath caught. The gem embedded in the center was the size of a quail’s egg, its surface swirling with inky black and red tendrils. The moment my fingers brushed against it, the whispers in my mind sharpened into a voice.
*"Finally. Perhaps you can be the one to free me, Hero."* The collar warmed against my skin.
A prompt flashed in my vision, stark and unyielding: **'Anya has offerd a spirit contract. Do you accept? Yes/No'** The words pulsed like a heartbeat, demanding an answer. My fingers trembled. I had no idea what spirit contract meant. The options pulsed without explanation. *Yes or no.*"
Anya’s voice slithered into my mind, smooth as poisoned honey. *"You are weak, little lamb. But I can make you strong. Accept my contract."* The shadows around me writhed, twisting into the shape of a woman—tall, regal, her black horns curling like smoke. Her red eyes burned through the dark, locking onto mine.
*"You are alone in this world, ignorant and weak."* The words slithered into my skull, cold and certain. My fingers trembled against the collar’s runes. I am alone. I could feel her strength. I felt dwarfed by her indomitable will.
Anya’s voice softened, a predator sensing fear. *"But you don’t have to stay that way."* The gem pulsed in time with my racing heart. My character sheet flickered into view again, mocking me—*Strength: 5 Willpower: 3* I hated myself for it, but the truth was undeniable. I wasn’t a hero. I was a gamer who’d never thrown a real punch, a guy who’d spent his life hiding behind pixels and headshots.
The gem’s glow warmed my fingers. And the shadowy woman placed a dominant hand on my cheek. *"I need you, little lamb."* Anya whispered. *"And you need me."* With her... maybe I had a chance. Maybe this was how it started for all the heroes in the stories I’d read—the moment of choice, the spark that lit the fire. My fingers tightened around the collar as I selected yes on the prompt.
The shadows around me thickened, coalescing into a figure—a woman with long black hair, her crimson eyes glowing like embers in the dark. She was tall, regal, her form-fitting dress clinging to her like a second skin, her horns curling back like the branches of some ancient, twisted tree. Anya.
I was suddenly face to face with a powerful demoness.
Her lips curled into a smile, slow and deliberate. "You have made your choice, little lamb. Do you know what happens when a human contracts a spirit?" The moment the words left her mouth, the air itself seemed to thicken, pressing against me like an invisible weight. An oppressive aura slammed into me, her strength and will crushing me into submission.*"The weaker being becomes subservient to the stronger. Ordinarily this would mean the spirt serves the human. But I am no weak flame spirit, boy!"*
My knees buckled. The dungeon walls blurred at the edges. The gem in my hand flared white-hot. I felt like I could try and resist her, but it would be a pointless endeavor. Her will was a mountain to my mole hill. I gave in instantly, allowing her to completely dominate me. I instinctively knew this meant she could set all the conditions of the contract and I'd have no say in it at all.
Anya’s laughter coiled through my mind, rich and velvety. "You didn't think this would be a fair contract, did you? You shall make an excellent puppet." Her form flickered, her edges dissolving into smoke before reforming—closer this time. her crimson eyes bored into mine.
The gem pulsed violently in my palm, its heat searing my skin. My fingers twitched, my muscles locking up as if controlled by invisible wires. I felt her will moving my hands, lifting the collar with trembling precision. I made no attempt to challenge her titanic will. Before I could even gasp, the clasp snapped shut around my neck with a final, metallic *click*—the sound echoing through the dungeon like a death knell.
The moment the collar sealed, Anya’s presence *exploded* inside my skull. Her laughter was no longer an external presence —it was inside my mind, a dark, velvety chuckle vibrating through my bones, my teeth, my very *soul*. I tried to scream, but the sound died in my throat as her consciousness coiled around mine like a serpent, squeezing, probing, *tasting* every secret thought I’d ever had. The moment I realized she could see them all—the shameful ones, the cowardly ones—her amusement deepened, her presence pressing harder against my mind’s fragile walls.
*"Oh, little lamb,"* she purred, her voice dripping with mock sympathy, *"you’ve spent so long hiding from the world. I will help you face it."* The weight of her will crushed down on me, not with brute force, but with the precision of a surgeon’s blade, slicing through my resistance.
The collar around my neck burned like a brand, the runes flaring with an eerie, pulsating light that seemed to drink in the shadows of the dungeon. Anya’s voice slithered through my thoughts, smooth and unyielding. "I meant what I said. I will make you powerful, my pet."*
The word *pet* coiled around my spine like a parasitic vine. It stung, but only because I knew it was true. In this cold dungeon, with a demon queen’s consciousness writhing in my skull, I had no illusions left. I couldn't lie to her, much less myself.
Anya’s laughter was a blade, twisting deeper. *"You see? You already understand."* The collar around my neck pulsed again, the runes flaring like embers. My body moved without my consent—my fingers flexing, my knees unlocking, my spine straightening. The transformation was subtle at first, a warmth spreading from the collar down into my chest, my limbs, my bones. My vision sharpened, the dungeon’s shadows resolving into crisp, vivid edges. The cold stone floor no longer bit into my bare feet. My muscles tensed, coiled, *ready*.
I looked down at my hands. They were no longer my own. The fingers were longer, the veins more pronounced, the skin stretched taut over knuckles that had never been so defined. I flexed them, watching the tendons shift beneath the surface like living things. I really was her pet. Maybe that's what I was always meant to be.
The realization didn't come as a shock. It settled over me like a second skin, something inevitable and inescapable. I could feel her amusement, the way she toyed with my resistance like a cat batting at a mouse. The words *I am yours, my queen* slipped from my lips before I could stop them, my voice trembling with something between fear and reverence. The moment they left my mouth, the collar around my neck pulsed with a dark, triumphant light, the runes flaring like embers in the suffocating dark.
Anya’s laughter coiled through my mind, rich and velvety, her presence pressing harder against my thoughts. *"Good pet,"* she purred, her voice dripping with satisfaction. The weight of her will crushed down on me, not with brute force, but with the precision of a surgeon’s blade, slicing through my resistance.
*"Now to conquer this dungeon's core."*
