Chapter 8: The First Taste

The word hung in the air, a naked invitation.

Raziel’s control, a fortress painstakingly maintained over four centuries of loneliness, crumbled to dust. It was not a collapse, but a detonation. A low, guttural sound ripped from his chest, a vibration that had nothing to do with speech and everything to do with need. His hand, still wrapped around her wrist, pulled. Not roughly, but with an inevitability that was far more potent.

Elara came to him without resistance, her body a fluid warmth against the solid plane of his chest. The robe, already loose, fell open completely as she moved, pooling like a dark promise at their feet. She was bare, utterly revealed, her skin glowing in the diffuse morning light. Raziel’s breath left him in a shuddering rush. He had seen divine and profane beauty in his long life, but this—this unashamed, breathing reality—undid him.

His other hand came up to cradle the side of her face, his thumb tracing the arch of her cheekbone. His touch was tentative, reverent, as if she were made of glass. His ice-blue eyes, usually haunted by distant storms, were now fixed on hers with a terrifying, singular focus. The hunger in them was raw, but it was layered with a desperate, aching wonder.

“Elara,” he whispered, her name a prayer and a question.

In answer, she rose onto her toes, closed the final inch of space, and claimed his mouth.

It was not a gentle kiss. It was a collision. A release. Her lips were soft but demanding, opening under his with a hunger that mirrored his own. The taste of her was dark coffee and something inherently sweet, a flavor that went straight to his head. A small, broken sound escaped her, vibrating against his mouth. It ignited him.

The last vestige of restraint burned away. His arms banded around her, one hand splayed across the small of her back, the other tangling in the wild silk of her hair. He lifted her as if she weighed nothing, her feet leaving the floor. She didn’t gasp; she wrapped her legs around his waist, anchoring herself, her body molding perfectly to his. The sheer, solid heat of his erection, still trapped in fabric, pressed insistently against her core. A shockwave of pure sensation tore through them both.

He carried her the few steps to the kitchen counter, sweeping the ruined plate and the blackened loaf onto the floor with a crash that went entirely unnoticed. He set her down on the cool stone surface, the contrast of temperature making her hiss and arch into him. He stood between her thighs, his larger frame caging her in, their breaths mingling in ragged gasps.

“Look at you,” he breathed, his voice a ruined thing. His gaze traveled over her, devouring the sight. The elegant column of her throat, the flush spreading across her chest, the gentle swell of her breasts tipped with hardened peaks. His hand followed his gaze, his palm rough against the satin of her skin, cupping the weight of her. He bowed his head, his lips leaving a searing trail down her neck, across her collarbone.

Elara’s head fell back, a moan tearing from her. Her hands were not idle. They mapped the hard planes of his back, her short nails digging into the dense muscle there, scoring paths through the faint, silvery scars that laced his skin—remnants of another life. When they found the bases of his horns, she didn’t shy away. She explored the smooth, warm curve where horn met skull, a touch so intimate it made him shudder violently against her.

“Raziel,” she gasped, her hands sliding to his hips, fumbling with the drawstring of his sweatpants. “This… now. I need…”

He helped her, his own hands trembling. The fabric gave way, and he sprang free, thick and heavy and fully engorged. The sight of him, the formidable scale of his inheritance, made her eyes widen for a split second. Not with fear, but with a fierce, appreciative awe. She reached for him, her fingers wrapping around as much of his girth as she could, her touch tentative at first, then firm. A bead of moisture pearled at his tip. She swiped her thumb through it, her gaze locked on his as she brought it to her mouth.

The visual nearly brought him to his knees.

He caught her hand, intertwining their fingers. “Wait,” he ground out, the word strained. “I don’t want to… I can’t hurt you.”

Her emerald eyes softened. She brought his knuckles to her lips, kissing them. “You won’t.” Her voice was smoke and certainty. “Trust me.” She guided his hand between her legs. “See?”

She was soaked, hot and slick and ready for him. The feel of her, the undeniable proof of her wanting, shattered the last of his hesitation. He positioned himself, the broad head nudging against her entrance. He watched her face, every micro-expression a scripture he was desperate to read.

“Look at me,” she commanded softly, her legs hooking tighter around him.

He did. As he pushed forward, a slow, inexorable invasion, he kept his eyes locked on hers. Her breath hitched, a sharp intake as her body stretched to accommodate him. Her nails bit into his shoulders. He held still, buried to the hilt, feeling her internal muscles flutter and grip him with a tight, wet heat that stole his reason. The fullness was immense, a borderline pain that transformed into a piercing, unbelievable pleasure. She let out a long, shuddering sigh, her eyes drifting shut for a moment before forcing them open to find his again.

“Move,” she whispered. “Please.”

He obeyed. With a groan that was pure surrender, he withdrew almost completely and sank back in. And again. Finding a rhythm that was less about technique and more about a deep, primal synchronicity. The counter groaned in time with their motions. His tail lashed behind him, knocking over an empty bottle, which rolled across the floor with a hollow clatter.

The world dissolved into sensation. The slap of skin on skin. The creak of the cabinet behind her back as he drove into her. The sound of her cries, each one a melody he’d been starved for. The smell of her arousal, of his own sweat, of the lingering scent of burnt toast—a bizarre, grounding anchor to reality.

He felt the tension coiling tighter in her, felt her inner walls beginning to ripple and clench around him. Her pleas became incoherent, her head thrashing from side to side. He captured her mouth again, swallowing her cries as his own release gathered like a thunderhead in the base of his spine, heavy and inevitable.

“Raziel,” she sobbed against his lips, her body bowing. “I’m… I’m…”

“Let go,” he growled, his thrusts becoming deeper, more frantic. “I have you.”

Her climax tore through her with a silent scream, a violent, trembling unraveling that clenched around him like a vise. The sight of her—eyes squeezed shut, mouth open in a perfect ‘O’ of ecstasy, body convulsing with pleasure she’d gifted herself with him—was his undoing.

His own release detonated, a white-hot cascade that ripped a raw, broken shout from his throat. He plunged deep, spilling into her in pulsing waves that seemed to draw from the very core of his centuries of solitude. It was more than physical. It felt like an exorcism. Like a redemption. He collapsed forward, catching his weight on his forearms on either side of her, his forehead pressed to her sweat-dampened shoulder, his great body shaking.

For long minutes, there was only the sound of their ragged breathing mingling in the quiet. The sun had moved, painting a new stripe of gold across the floor. Slowly, carefully, he slipped from her body, a loss that felt profound. He didn’t pull away. He stayed there, holding her, his face buried in the curve of her neck.

Her hands came up, one stroking the short hair at the nape of his neck, the other tracing soothing circles on his back. She pressed a kiss to his temple, just below the ridge of his horn.

The silence was not empty. It was full. Full of the echo of what they’d done, the ghost of sensations still humming on their skin. Full of questions that were too vast to voice.

Finally, her voice, husky and warm, broke the stillness. “So,” she murmured, her breath teasing his ear. “About that breakfast you promised to make.”

A sound escaped him—part laugh, part sob, wholly overwhelmed. He tightened his arms around her, holding on as if she were the only real thing in a universe of shadows. He had come to her loft smelling of embers and regret. Now, he was immersed in the scent of her skin, the salt of their sweat, and something fragile, something terrifyingly new, that for the first time in four hundred years, did not smell like an ending.
