Chapter 4: Devotees
The stale sweetness of sex hung in the air, mixed with Sara’s vanilla perfume and the lingering scent of coffee absorbed into their clothes, discarded hours ago. Streetlight bled around the edges of the heavy curtains, painting silver stripes across the rumpled duvet. Sara lay on her side, propped up on one elbow, tracing idle patterns on his bare chest with a fingertip. The warmth of him, the steady thump of his heart under her touch, felt solid, real. He watched her, eyes dark and unreadable in the gloom, the tension from the coffee shop confession replaced by a heavy, post-coital languor.
"You're quiet," she murmured, her voice a low rasp. Her leg, the one closest to him, was stretched out, the foot flexing slightly. A conscious movement. The other, closer to the edge of the bed, lay utterly still.
"Just… thinking." His voice was rough. He shifted his shoulders, adjusting his position slightly against the pillows. The movement of his upper body was fluid, controlled. Below the waist, nothing stirred beneath the sheet.
"About earlier?" She let her finger trail lower, skimming his ribs. "About what you like?"
He swallowed. "Yeah. About… what you did."
"What I did?" A slow smile spread across her face. She nudged his hip with her knee. "You seemed pretty into what you were doing too, mister." She paused, letting the memory of his intensity hang between them. "Seriously though. That whole… devotee thing. And the foot thing. You never really talked about it before, not like that."
He looked away, focusing on the ceiling. "Didn't seem appropriate. Most people… they don’t get it. They think it’s weird. Pathetic."
"Mm." Sara considered this. Her free hand drifted down her own body, over the soft cotton of her underwear, past her hip, coming to rest lightly on the top of her thigh. Her fingers brushed the distinct line where sensation faded, just above her knee. "But you saw me. In the coffee shop. The chair. And you still…?"
He met her gaze again, intensity flaring. "Especially then." The admission was raw. "The way you moved it… handled it. Like it was just part of you. No fuss. Just… power."
Sara’s smile deepened, turning feline. She let her hand slide further down her thigh, past the point where she could feel its weight, coming to rest on the smooth, cool skin of her quadricep. "This part?" she asked, her voice dropping to a murmur. "This bit of dead meat?"
He flinched, but his eyes followed her hand. "Don't call it that."
"Why not?" She pressed down with her fingers. "That’s what it is, functionally. Nerves shot. Useless." She dragged her hand lower, over her knee cap, tracing the bone she could feel but not sense. "Just… flesh and bone. Like a mannequin leg." Her fingers reached her shin, then skimmed over the delicate arch of her foot. She flexed her toes slowly, deliberately, watching his eyes lock onto the movement. "Except these little guys still work. Mostly. Weak, but they wiggle." She demonstrated, curling her toes inward, then spreading them wide.
He made a low sound in his throat. His knuckles were white where they gripped the sheet.
"You like watching them, don't you?" Sara whispered. She lifted her right leg slightly with her hands, the muscles utterly unresponsive, letting it fall back onto the mattress with a soft thump. "All floppy. Like a puppet with the strings cut." She lifted it again, holding it bent at the knee, suspending the dead weight. The sole of her foot faced him, pale in the dim light. "Completely helpless." She lowered it slowly. "Can't feel a thing down here. You know that, right? Absolutely nothing." She let her foot dangle off the edge of the bed for a moment, then drew it back up, deliberately brushing the top of her cold foot against his bare calf.
He inhaled sharply. His whole body tensed.
"Does that… turn you on?" she pressed, her voice a breathy challenge. "Knowing I can't feel you touching me here?" She dragged her heel slowly up his shin. "That you could do anything… and I wouldn't know? Unless I saw it?"
His jaw clenched. "Sara…"
"Or watching you touch them?" she continued relentlessly, moving her foot back to rest beside his leg. She planted her heel firmly on the mattress, letting her toes point limply towards the headboard. "Knowing you're staring? Like you're staring now?" She reached down with both hands, taking her own ankle. Her thumbs pressed into the tendons. "I could pinch myself here," she said, demonstrating. Her nails dug into the skin above her heel. "Hard enough to bruise. And I wouldn't feel a twinge." She looked up at him, her eyes bright. "But you would see it. You'd watch the mark appear on my useless skin. Would you like that?"
He didn't answer. He was breathing hard now, a flush creeping up his neck. His gaze was fixed on her hands, on the pale skin of her ankle she was abusing.
"Want me to leave a mark?" she asked, tilting her head. "Something for you to remember tonight by? Something only you can see tomorrow?" She applied more pressure, her knuckles whitening. A faint red mark began to bloom under her thumb. "Proof that you looked?"
"Stop." The word was choked.
She released the pressure instantly, smoothing her thumb over the angry spot. "Why? Does it bother you? Or… does it bother you how much it doesn't bother you?" She traced the faint redness. "This foot…" She lifted it slightly with her hands again, letting it wobble grotesquely. "It's just an object to me. A tool for the chair pedals. A thing to strap shoes onto. But to you…" She let it drop. It hit the mattress with a soft, heavy sound. "To you, it’s something else. Something fascinating. Something…" She paused, searching for the word. "...Worshipful."
He finally tore his gaze away, staring at the ceiling again, a muscle working in his jaw. The silence stretched, thick and electric. Sara watched him, the frantic pulse in his neck, the way his chest rose and fell. The vulnerability was back, raw and exposed, but mixed now with something darker, hotter. The power dynamic had shifted entirely into her hands, and the weight of it, the danger of it, was intoxicating.
She moved suddenly, swinging her leg – the one she could feel – over his hips, straddling him. The sheet tangled between them. Her hands planted on his chest. She leaned down, her hair falling forward, brushing his skin. Her lips hovered inches from his.
"Tell me," she breathed. Her voice was pure velvet, laced with steel. "Tell me exactly what you want to do to the parts of me that can't feel you." She shifted her weight, pressing down deliberately, feeling the heat of him through the thin sheet. "Tell me what you want to see. How you want to touch what I can't feel. Tell me," she demanded, her eyes locking onto his, "before I have to make you."
A choked laugh escaped him, ragged and desperate. "You already know, Sara." His hand shot out, surprisingly quick, wrapping around her wrist – the one still pressed to his chest. His grip was tight, almost painful, but she didn't pull away. "You see it every time you move that leg, every time you plant that foot."
He released her wrist, his palm sliding down her arm, over the curve of her hip, rough skin catching slightly on the cotton of her underwear. His fingers traced a line down the outside of her thigh, the one stretched beside him on the mattress. Past the border where her own sensation vanished, down towards her knee. His gaze followed his own touch, dark with a hunger that was hard to watch and impossible to look away from. "I'm just… god, Sara. I'm just so fucking glad you’re here. That you’re not…" He swallowed, looking back up at her face, searching her eyes. "...that you’re not repulsed by this. By me wanting you like this. The chair, the legs… all of it." His voice was thick, almost a whisper. "Most people run."
She held his gaze, the intensity in her own eyes softening just a fraction, replaced by a fierce kind of understanding. "Running’s boring," she murmured, a faint smile touching her lips. "And predictable." She shifted her weight slightly on his hips, a deliberate roll that drew a sharp intake of breath from him. "I like unpredictable."
His hand, resting near her knee now, trembled slightly. Then, with a sudden, almost clumsy urgency, he grabbed her other ankle – the one dangling off the bed’s edge that she’d brushed against him earlier. His fingers dug into the cool, unresponsive flesh above the bone. He didn't look down. His eyes stayed locked on hers, blazing with a raw, naked need as he hauled her lower leg up.
He guided her bare foot towards himself. He didn't hesitate. He pressed her cool, pale sole firmly against the hard ridge straining beneath the thin sheet tangled around his hips. She felt nothing, of course. Just the slight resistance of the fabric, the pressure of his hand holding her ankle rigid. But she saw. Saw the tremble run through his whole body, saw his head fall back against the pillow, the tendons in his neck standing out like cables. A rough groan tore from his throat.
Sara watched him, mesmerized by the raw vulnerability and fervor warring on his face. Her smile widened, predatory and pleased. "That feel good?" she asked, her voice low and husky. She flexed her toes slightly against the pressure, a weak motion she could just manage. "Using my dead foot?"
His only answer was a strangled gasp. His hips bucked involuntarily beneath her, grinding against the arch of her unfeeling foot. His knuckles were white where he gripped her ankle, holding it hard against him.
Slowly, deliberately, Sara pushed herself back, sliding off his hips. She moved down the bed, the sheet rasping against her skin. Her gaze never left his face as she knelt between his legs. She reached up, her fingers hooking into the waistband of the sheet. She pulled it down slowly, freeing him. The lamplight caught the wetness already beading at his tip, the flushed, rigid length of him straining upwards.
She leaned in, her hair falling forward to brush his thighs. She inhaled his scent, musky and sharp, mixed with the faint tang of her own skin from where her foot had pressed. She looked up at him one last time, her eyes dark pools reflecting the low light. Then she lowered her head.
Her tongue traced the swollen head of his cock, a slow, flat stroke that tasted salt and heat. He cried out, a ragged, broken sound. His hand, still gripping her ankle, tightened convulsively. She took him deeper, her mouth soft and wet and demanding, hollowing her cheeks. She used her hand too, pumping the base in rhythm with her mouth, her thumb rubbing circles against the sensitive skin underneath.
His hips jerked. He tried to thrust upwards, seeking more. "Sara… fuck…" His voice was a strangled plea, thick with imminent release. His free hand fisted in the sheets beside him, twisting the fabric.
She hummed low in her throat. The vibration sent a visible shockwave through him. His back arched off the bed, a choked gasp escaping. Then he was coming, hard pulses flooding her mouth, hot and bitter. He cried out again, wordless this time, his whole body rigid with the force of it. She swallowed, taking it all, her hand still working him gently until the tremors subsided. She kept her mouth on him, soft and warm, until he finally went limp, breathing in ragged, shuddering gasps.
Slowly, she lifted her head. Her lips glistened faintly. She caught his dazed gaze, wiped the back of her hand across her mouth, and smiled.
