Chapter 1: Shadows and Surrender
For a heartbeat he simply stared, pale eyes wide, the cloak around his shoulders a restless tide. You had never seen Morpheus — the Dream of the Endless, lord of shadows and nightmares — at a loss for words. Yet now he was, standing in your chamber with the scent of night clinging to him, hands slightly open as though holding back a storm.
You took a slow step toward him, the weight of your belly making your movements ungainly, though your voice softened with mischief. “I know I am huge,” you whispered, tilting your head, a smile tugging faintly at your lips. “But—”
He cut you off at once, his voice low, fierce, and unshakable. “But you are still the most beautiful being in all the realms.” His hand lifted, trembling, before settling against your cheek as though to anchor the words. “Do not speak otherwise. Do not think it. To me, you are everything.”
Your laugh wavered, caught between amusement and sudden tears. “You don’t have to say that just because I’m carrying your child.”
His pale eyes burned, steady as starlight. “I say it because it is truth. The child is precious—but you, beloved, are beyond measure. My queen. My heart. The one I would unmake worlds for.”
The words left you breathless, your smile breaking under the heat of it. You leaned into his touch, your fingers catching at his wrist, grounding yourself against the intensity in his gaze.
Your fingers tightened around his wrist, pulling him closer, the fabric of his sleeve brushing your heated skin. The air hummed, thick with jasmine and the faint, ever-present murmur of distant dreams swirling beyond the chamber walls. His gaze held yours, that pale blue storm, utter devotion warring with a need so raw it stole your breath.
"You are always so dramatic, my love," you murmured, a shaky laugh escaping you. "A simple 'you look nice' would suffice."
He didn't smile. His other hand rose, tracing the curve of your jaw, his thumb sweeping over your lower lip. The touch sent shivers cascading down your spine. "Dramatics are for mortals. What I speak is simply... truth. As real as the life we created growing within you."
His palm drifted down, skimming the taut swell of your stomach. The child stirred beneath his touch, a flutter of limbs you felt deep in your core. A shared gasp escaped you both – yours soft, his a sharp intake of breath. Wonder flooded his expression, momentarily eclipsing the intensity. "They know my touch," he breathed.
"Always," you whispered, leaning further into him, the hard planes of his body a counterpoint to your softened curves. "They know their father."
The reverence in his eyes deepened, but the storm returned, banked with a heat that radiated through his clothes. His hand slid lower, fingers splaying possessively over the curve of your hip beneath the loose, flowing gown you wore. The fabric was cool linen, simple against the opulent silks of the Dreaming, chosen for comfort over grandeur. His touch burned through it.
"Too much fabric," he murmured, his voice rough velvet against your ear. One finger hooked gently into the neckline of your gown, tugging it down just an inch, exposing the sensitive skin of your shoulder. His lips followed, pressing a hot, open-mouthed kiss there. You arched instinctively, a low moan catching in your throat as the sensation sparked through your overloaded nerves.
You gasped, your grip on his wrist tightening.
"Morpheus..." It was half protest, half desperate plea.
"Shhh," he breathed against your shoulder, his fingers finding the knot of the tie. "Let me worship you, my love."
The tie gave way. The soft linen gown loosened. Cool air brushed your skin as he eased it down, the fabric pooling around your hips, then falling completely as he guided it over the swell of your belly and down your legs. The shadows helped, supporting you as he bent, his movements fluid and reverent, easing the garment over your feet.
You stood before him, bathed in the perpetual twilight, utterly exposed. The weight of your pregnancy felt more profound now, a sacred burden he worshipped with his eyes. His gaze travelled over you, from the cascade of your hair down the curve of your neck, over your heavy breasts, the immense, beautiful swell of your belly, down to your strong thighs. There was no judgment, only raw, overwhelming adoration. A low sound, almost a growl, vibrated in his chest. "Perfection," he rasped. "Utter perfection."
You felt no shame, only a profound vulnerability mixed with an electric current of desire. His own clothes seemed suddenly absurdly formal. You reached for the clasp of his cloak, but your belly made the movement awkward. "I... I can't reach properly," you admitted, a flush rising on your cheeks.
He caught your hand, bringing it to his lips. "Allow me." Stepping back just enough, he shrugged off the heavy cloak. It dissolved into motes of darkness before it could touch the floor. The rest of his clothes quickly followed and the sight of him, pale and powerful, shadows clinging to his shoulders like loyal hounds, was breathtaking.
He stepped close again, the heat radiating from his skin palpable. His hands settled on your hips, large and warm, thumbs stroking the sensitive skin just above the rise of your belly. His head dipped, his nose brushing your temple, inhaling deeply.
He guided you backwards, not forcefully, but with an undeniable pull. One step, then another. The shadows moved ahead, parting the silken hangings around the enormous, low bed piled with cushions. Feathers rustled softly within. The scent of spices and dried roses mingled with the jasmine here, heady and intimate.
The backs of your knees met the edge of the mattress. He didn't push. He paused, his forehead resting against yours, his breath mingling with yours. His eyes were closed, a faint tension in his jaw, as if gathering himself. The air crackled. The whispers of distant dreams seemed to hush, holding their breath.
"Down," he commanded softly, his voice thick.
You sank onto the edge of the bed, the soft silk cool against your skin. He followed you down, his knee pressing into the mattress between your legs as he leaned over you, bracing one hand beside your hip. His other hand traced a slow, burning path up your inner thigh, his gaze locked on yours, filled with a storm of love, need, and ancient, fathomless power poised to be unleashed.
His fingers paused their burning ascent, hovering just below the core of your heat. The air thickened, charged with the scent of jasmine and his own dark spice. The whispers of the Dreaming outside the silken hangings seemed to hush entirely. All that existed was the weight of his gaze, the warmth radiating from his skin onto yours, the heavy, sacred swell of your belly pressing against him, and the agonizing anticipation vibrating between you.
"Look at me," he commanded, his voice a low rumble that resonated deep in your bones.
You obeyed, meeting the storm in his pale eyes – a tempest of love so vast it stole your breath, need so raw it felt like a physical ache, and the ancient, terrifying power that was his birthright, held in check by the sheer force of his devotion to you.
His hand slid away from your thigh. For a heartbeat, you felt bereft, a small sound of protest escaping your lips. But then he shifted. He moved not over you, but away from the bed's edge. One knee, then the other, lowered deliberately to the cool, polished stone floor beside the bed. The shadows deepened around him, pooling at his bare knees, like dark water reflecting the twilight.
He kneels, worshipping.
His gaze never left yours as he settled there, at the base of the bed, your feet still resting on the edge. He was eye-level with the magnificent, taut curve of your belly. His large hands, usually instruments of creation and subtle destruction within his realm, came up slowly, reverently. They hovered for a moment, palms open, before settling onto the warm skin just below your navel, framing the life growing within.
The touch was electric. Possessive, yet achingly tender. A shudder ran through you, not of cold, but of profound connection. You could feel the child stir beneath his palms, a strong kick that made him gasp softly, wonder momentarily eclipsing the fierce hunger in his eyes. His thumbs began a slow, rhythmic sweep over your skin, tracing the stretched lines, the shifting contours.
"My queen," he breathed, the words a caress. His head dipped, his forehead pressing against the swell where his child lay. He inhaled deeply, as if breathing you both in. "My beloved. You carry universes within you." His lips brushed your skin, feather-light, just above where his hands rested. "You are my cathedral. My most sacred dream."
His mouth trailed lower, following the curve, pressing hot, open kisses against the sensitive skin. Each kiss felt like a brand of devotion. His hands slid down to cradle your hips, his thumbs now stroking the crease where your thigh met your body. His breath was hot against your skin as he murmured words lost in the intimacy, ancient words of reverence and adoration you felt rather than heard.
One hand left your hip, trailing fire up your inner thigh again, higher this time, parting you gently. His gaze lifted, locking with yours once more. The storm in his eyes had deepened, turned molten. The reverence was still there, an unshakeable foundation, but now overlaid with a desperate, focused need.
"Let me," he rasped, the request rough with wanting. His fingers found your heat, slick and swollen, trembling at his touch. A ragged cry tore from your throat as he circled the aching bud with exquisite precision. His thumb pressed, firm and knowing, while a single finger slid deep inside you, curling in a way that shattered your thoughts.
"Oh god, Morpheus!" You arched off the bed, your fingers scrabbling for purchase in the silk sheets, tangling in the dark strands of his hair as he leaned closer, his breath hot on your sensitive skin. His mouth followed his hand, replacing his thumb, his tongue lathing the swollen peak with deliberate, devastating strokes.
The dual assault – the relentless, worshipful attention of his mouth and the deep, curling thrust of his finger – catapulted you to the edge instantly. The pleasure was immense, almost blinding, amplified by the profound intimacy of his position, kneeling before you, lost in his devotion. The child kicked again, a sharp, insistent reminder of the life created by this love, adding another layer of overwhelming reality to the spiralling sensation.
Your moans turned desperate, fragmented. "Y-yes... there... please..." You were falling, the precipice rushing up to meet you, the world narrowing to the feel of his mouth, his hands, the weight of your belly, the scent of him, the primal sounds he made against your skin.
He pulled his finger away abruptly, replacing it with two, stretching you deliciously as his tongue intensified its assault. His free hand gripped your hip, holding you steady as your body bucked against his mouth.
"Come for me, my love," he commanded against your flesh, his voice vibrating through you.
The command, the sheer promise in his voice, shattered the last fragile threads of control. The climax tore through you with the force of a supernova. Light exploded behind your eyes, not metaphorical, but actual, shimmering motes dancing in the twilight air of the chamber as the Dreaming itself reacted to your ecstasy. Your back arched impossibly, a cry ripped from your throat that echoed strangely in the silent room, and you felt yourself clenching rhythmically around his fingers as wave after wave of pure, incandescent pleasure crashed over you.
He held you through it, his mouth softening but not leaving you, his fingers still deep within, drawing out every last tremor as your body convulsed. Only when the shudders subsided to trembling aftershocks did he slowly withdraw his hand. He lifted his head, his lips glistening, his chin damp. His eyes, dark pools now reflecting the fading sparks of your release, held yours with a look of such profound satisfaction, such awe, it made your spent body hum anew.
He rose smoothly from his knees, his movements fluid and predatory despite the reverence of moments before. He climbed onto the bed beside you, his body a long, warm line against yours. He gathered you gently into his arms, careful of your belly, pulling you back against his chest. One hand splayed possessively over the swell of your stomach, the other stroked your sweat-dampened hair from your forehead.
"Beautiful," he murmured, pressing a kiss to the crown of your head. "Utterly devastating." His voice was thick with his own unsated need, a low thrum against your back.
His voice vibrated against your spine, a deep hum of desire barely contained. You nestled back into the solid warmth of his chest, spent and trembling, the echoes of your climax still shimmering in your nerves like fading starlight. His hand remained splayed possessively over the taut curve of your belly, feeling the subtle shift and roll of the life within. His other hand traced idle, soothing patterns on your arm, fingertips whispering over your skin.
"You," you murmured, your voice thick and drowsy with satisfaction, "are entirely too good at that." You tilted your head back against his shoulder, seeking his lips. He met you halfway, his kiss slow, deep, tasting of you and the dark spice that clung to him. It was a claiming kiss, a promise kiss, simmering with the heat he hadn't yet spent.
"Merely attentive," he breathed against your mouth, his thumb circling your navel. "To the needs of my queen." His lips trailed down your jawline, nipping lightly at the sensitive spot beneath your ear. You shivered, a fresh spark igniting low in your belly despite the lingering exhaustion.
"Impatient," he murmured, pressing a kiss to your temple. His hand slid lower, skimming the sensitive skin of your hip, dipping between your thighs. You were still slick, swollen, hypersensitive from his earlier ministrations. His touch, even light, sent jolts through you.
"You're insatiable," you breathed, arching slightly into his hand. The fatigue was real, a heavy weight pulling at your limbs, but the thrum of need he effortlessly rekindled was undeniable.
"Only for you," he countered, his fingers finding your heat, exploring the damp folds with deliberate slowness. "Always for you." He pressed a kiss to your shoulder blade. "Tell me you want this. Tell me you want me."
The request wasn't demand, but a seeking of connection, a confirmation. You turned your head, catching his gaze over your shoulder. His eyes were pools of liquid night, intense and fathomless, holding yours captive. The devotion was absolute, the hunger barely leashed. "Always," you whispered, the word catching. "You know I do. Even when I'm enormous and waddling."
A flicker of amusement softened the intensity in his eyes. "You carry creation," he stated, his voice reverent. "There is no state more powerful. No form more desirable to me." His fingers slid deeper, curling expertly, drawing a gasp from you.
He shifted behind you, his body aligning more fully against yours. One strong arm wrapped securely around your waist, supporting your belly, his hand still resting possessively low. His other hand guided himself, the thick, hard length of him pressing insistently against your entrance. The sensation was electric, a delicious pressure that promised both pleasure and profound connection.
He enters slowly.
An inch. Deliberate. Measured. Filling the aching space he’d created. The stretch was intense, different now with the fullness of your pregnancy, a deeper, more encompassing pressure that radiated warmth through your core. You gasped, fingers tightening on the arm wrapped around you, anchoring yourself. A low groan escaped him, a sound of pure, primal satisfaction vibrating against your back.
Another inch. Deeper. The friction was exquisite, a slow burn igniting along nerve endings already sensitized. His breath hitched against your neck. "My love..." His voice was rough gravel. "You feel... divine."
You pushed back instinctively, seeking more of that delicious friction, that profound connection. He held you steady, controlling the pace. "Slowly, beloved," he murmured, his lips brushing your ear.
He withdrew slightly, agonizingly slow, then pushed forward again, sinking deeper still. The rhythm began, a slow, deep rocking motion. Each deliberate thrust was a revelation. The angle, the pressure against your swollen walls, the way your body yielded and gripped him – it was unlike anything before.
His shadows coiled instinctively, not restraining, but supporting. They cradled your hips, cushioned your back against his chest, a living extension of his care. They slid like cool silk over your heated skin, a counterpoint to the burning friction within.
"Talk to me," he breathed, his thrusts maintaining that deep, slow cadence. "Tell me how it feels."
"Full," you gasped out, arching as he hit a spot that sent sparks behind your eyelids. "So... deep. Gods, Morpheus... it's... different. More." You couldn't find better words. It was overwhelming. The physical sensation, the emotional weight, the sheer rightness of him moving inside you while your child rested just beneath his hand.
"More," he echoed, his voice thick with awe. He shifted his hips minutely, changing the angle, and you cried out as pleasure detonated low in your belly, sharp and bright. "Yes," he hissed, holding that angle, thrusting with renewed, focused intensity. "There. That's it. Let me feel you."
His hand slid from your belly down, finding the swollen bud above where you were joined. His thumb pressed, circled, matched the rhythm of his deep thrusts. The dual stimulation was devastating. Pleasure coiled tighter and tighter, a spring wound beyond bearing. You were panting, whimpering his name, lost in the sensations he orchestrated – the deep, stretching fullness, the insistent pressure of his thumb, the scrape of his teeth on your shoulder, the possessive grip of his arm.
The sensation, the overwhelming connection shattered you. The climax wasn't a sharp peak this time, but a deep, rolling wave that started in your core and radiated outwards, pulling a long, shuddering cry from your throat. Your inner muscles clenched rhythmically around him, milking his length, pulling him deeper still.
He held himself rigid for a heartbeat, buried to the hilt within you, his forehead pressed hard between your shoulder blades. Then, with a guttural groan that seemed to shake the very twilight air, he surrendered. His release pulsed hot and deep inside you, wave after wave, his body shuddering against yours, his arm tightening convulsively around your waist. His shadows coiled tighter, a protective, possessive embrace.
For long moments, there was only the sound of ragged breathing and the distant, resumed whispers of dreams. He remained buried within you, his softening length still a warm, intimate presence. His hand drifted back to cradle your belly, his thumb stroking gently over the spot where the child had kicked. His lips pressed soft, lingering kisses against your shoulder, your neck.
"Y/N," he murmured, his voice rough but tender. "My heart. My everything."
