Chapter 8: The Shared Session

The warehouse felt different with him there. The usual cathedral silence was fractured by the soft, rhythmic sound of James’s breathing as he stretched his hamstrings on a faded blue mat. He was already in his shorts, skin glistening under a sheen of pre-workout sweat. He looked up as the heavy door clanged shut behind me, his perpetual grin faltering for a split second.

“Ben?”

“James.”

A stiff silence descended, thicker than the chalk dust in the air. My gym bag felt suddenly heavy in my hand. This was my space, my ordeal. His presence felt like an intrusion, a violation of a private ritual. The competitive ember in my chest, banked since our kitchen confrontation, sparked back to life.

Before either of us could say another word, the door to the back office opened. Stu emerged, a clipboard in hand, his expression as neutral as the concrete floors. He wore tight black athletic shorts and a simple gray tank, his physique a blatant testament to his own methods. His eyes moved from James to me, assessing, calculating.

“Gentlemen,” he said, his calm voice filling the space. “A change in protocol today. You’re training together.”

My stomach dropped. “Together?”

James let out a low whistle, rolling up to his feet. “A duo session? Stu, you never told me you were into audience participation.”

Stu ignored the quip. “The energy between you is palpable. Competitive. Aggressive. It’s a fuel source we’ve been ignoring.” He set the clipboard down on a nearby bench. “Today, we harness it. Strip. Everything off.”

The command hung in the air, brutal in its simplicity. Last time, the nudity had been a solitary surrender. This was a public unveiling. A comparison. James, after only a slight hesitation, hooked his thumbs in the waistband of his shorts and pushed them down, stepping out with a nonchalance that seemed only half-forced. He stood there, completely exposed, his gaze fixed on a point on the far wall, his jaw tight.

My fingers felt numb on the drawstring of my sweats. I forced them to move. The fabric pooled at my feet. The warehouse air was cool on my skin. I refused to hunch, to cover myself. I stood straight, shoulders back, facing Stu but hyper-aware of James in my peripheral vision.

And I looked.

I couldn’t help it. The assessment was automatic, instinctive. James was leaner, his muscle definition etched with a sculptor’s precision. And he was longer. The fact stabbed at me, a direct hit to a primal, stupid part of my brain. A silent tally: zero to him. But then, as my eyes adjusted, I saw the rest. The thickness. The comparative heft. My own private awareness, now thrown into a stark, visual equation. The tally evened. It wasn’t a relief. It was just more data in a contest I hadn’t agreed to.

I felt James’s eyes on me then, a physical weight traveling from my shoulders down my torso. When I finally met his gaze, his usual grin was gone. His expression was unreadable—part curiosity, part assessment, and something else I couldn’t name. A faint, grudging acknowledgment. Neither of us looked away.

“On the mats. Side by side,” Stu instructed, his voice cutting through the silent standoff.

We lay down on the worn vinyl, a foot of charged space between us. The ceiling lights were blinding. I could hear the faint rustle of James adjusting his position, the sound of his breathing already slightly accelerated.

Then Stu’s hands were on me. Familiar and foreign all at once. His thumbs pressed into the tense knots of my pectorals, his fingers working down the ridges of my abs. It was the same clinical, deliberate touch, but my awareness was split. Half of me was trapped in the sensation, the building tension in my groin. The other half was screamingly aware of James lying right there, undergoing the same treatment.

I heard James’s breath hitch. A soft, choked sound. My own body was responding, betraying me, blood rushing south as Stu’s skilled hands worked lower. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw James’s stomach clench, saw his hand fist against the mat.

Stu moved between us like a conductor. A touch on me, then on James. Building the rhythm. Stoking two separate fires into a single, roaring blaze. His voice was a low, hypnotic drone. “Feel that energy. That’s yours. That’s his. It’s all just fuel. Don’t release it. Contain it. Let it scream.”

It was agony. A shared, intimate agony. My skin was on fire. Every brush of Stu’s fingers was a lightning strike. I was panting, my hips giving tiny, involuntary jerks. Next to me, James was in a similar state, a sheen of sweat covering his torso, a broken sound escaping his lips every few seconds. The air reeked of sweat, pre-cum, and pure, undiluted frustration.

I dared to turn my head. James’s eyes were closed, his brow furrowed in intense concentration. He was biting his lower lip hard.

“Look at each other,” Stu commanded.

Our eyes snapped open, met. In that mirrored gaze I saw my own desperate struggle, my own humiliated arousal. And I saw his. There was no smirk now. No casual superiority. Just raw, naked need. We were equals here, on this precipice.

Stu’s hands left us simultaneously.

The absence was a shock. We were both trembling, teetering on the very edge. The physical urge to finish was a deafening roar. I shook with the effort to hold it back.

“Now,” Stu said, his voice slicing through the haze. “The workout. Channel every ounce of that. Don’t let it dissipate. Weaponize it.”

Moving to the weight rack was a surreal, torturous pilgrimage. Every step sent a jolt through my over-sensitized body. James moved beside me, his movements stiff, controlled. We didn’t speak.

Stu loaded a barbell with a weight that was, objectively, brutal. “Bench. Spot each other.”

I lay back on the bench. The cool leather was a shock against my heated skin. James stood at my head, his hands hovering near the bar. Our eyes met in the vast mirror mounted on the pillar ahead.

“Lift,” Stu said.

I gripped the bar. The frustration, the anger, the humiliating arousal—it all coalesced into a white-hot current in my veins. I pushed. The weight, which should have been impossible, moved. It was brutal, but it moved. My muscles sang with a painful, glorious fire. Every rep was a battle against the desperate need for release still throbbing in my gut.

“Your turn,” I grunted, rolling off the bench.

We switched. Now I was spotting him. As he lifted, his body straining, cords standing out in his neck, I watched. I saw the power Stu had carved into him. I saw the same fueled desperation driving each push. Our eyes locked in the mirror again, over the bar he was pressing. A silent, furious conversation passed between us. You won’t beat me. You can’t beat me. I have this same fire.

We moved through the circuit—squats, deadlifts, weighted pull-ups—a brutal, non-verbal duel. The charged energy didn’t fade; it transformed. The sexual frustration mutated into a deeper, more vicious drive. Every grunt from James fueled my next set. Every plate I slammed down made him add five more pounds.

We didn’t speak. We just pushed. The only sounds were our ragged breaths, the clang of iron, and Stu’s occasional, soft directives. “Good. Feel that. Use it.”

By the time Stu called a halt, we were both destroyed. Dripping with sweat, muscles quivering with exhaustion, the initial sharp need blunted into a heavy, aching throb that was now inextricable from the muscular fatigue. We stood across from each other, heaving for air.

Stu looked at us, a faint, approving curl at the corner of his mouth. “Session complete. You may shower.”

He walked back to his office, leaving us in the wreckage of the workout.

The silence now was different. Loaded, but not hostile. James wiped his face with his forearm. “Jesus Christ,” he breathed, the words barely audible.

“Yeah,” I managed, my voice raw.

He looked at me, really looked, for the first time since we’d gotten off the mats. The assessment was still there, but the edge was gone. “You… you put up twenty more on the deadlift than I did.”

I nodded, a strange, exhausted triumph cutting through the confusion. “You got two more reps on the pull-ups.”

A slow, genuine smile spread across his face, not his usual grin, but something softer. Tired. “Stu’s a fucking madman.”

I found myself returning the smile, a shaky, disbelieving thing. “A fucking effective madman.”

We gathered our things, the awkwardness of our nudity momentarily forgotten in the shared wreck of our bodies and wills. As we headed toward the rusted shower stall in the corner, James glanced over at me. His voice was casual, but his eyes were serious. “So. Who’s his biggest client, you think?”

The question hung between us. I thought of Stu’s hands, his identical whispers, the perfect manipulation. I met his gaze. “We both are,” I said, the realization dawning as I said it. “That’s the whole point.”

James held my look for a long moment, then gave a single, slow nod. He understood. The game was clearer now. We weren’t just clients. We were opponents Stu was expertly pitting against each other, stoking a rivalry that fed his results. And we had both just willingly walked deeper into it.

The water from the shower was lukewarm and stingy. I stood under it, letting it pound on my stiff shoulders, hearing the spray hit James in the adjacent stall. The ghost of his competitive gaze was still on my skin, a new and permanent sensation. It wasn’t just about the weights anymore. It was about everything. And for the first time, I wasn’t sure if I wanted to win, or if I just needed to make sure he didn’t lose the same way I was afraid to.
