Chapter 1: Introduction
The smell of burnt coffee and yesterday’s pizza hung in the air of Ben’s apartment, a familiar, slightly stale perfume. Sunlight, weak and dusty, struggled through the perpetually grimy window above the sink, illuminating floating motes and the overflowing chaos of Ben’s life. Textbooks formed precarious towers on the floor beside the sagging sofa. Faded band posters – relics from angsty teenage years – warred for wall space with a sad, meticulously detailed corkboard. Color-coded workout schedules formed elaborate grids, most dates uncrossed, next to motivational quotes that felt increasingly like accusations: "Sweat is just fat crying!" and "No Pain, No Gain!" screamed brightly coloured sticky notes. Ben traced the outline of his bicep through his thin t-shirt. The 'gain' part felt stubbornly elusive.
The apartment's only real light source, apart from the struggling sunbeam, burst through the door connecting to the other bedroom. Ella. She moved like contained lightning, humming something discordant, a whirlwind of dark curls escaping a messy bun. Her faded band t-shirt, featuring a graphic Ben couldn’t decipher under the stains, was half-tucked into grey sweatpants. Over it all, her signature accessory: a crisply white lab coat, sleeves rolled up, pockets bulging with who-knew-what. It shouldn't have worked. It absolutely did.
"Morning, slug," she chirped, already rummaging in the fridge. Her voice was bright, cutting through the apartment's lethargy. "Or, considering the sun's been up for hours, afternoon?"
"Define 'morning'," Ben mumbled, hunched over his laptop at the tiny kitchen table. He quickly minimized the browser tab showing 'Beginner Muscle Building: Realistic Timelines? "Coffee’s… well, it exists. Sort of."
Ella surfaced, triumphant, clutching a dubious-looking yoghurt pot. She hopped onto the counter, legs swinging, ignoring the stack of unwashed mugs perilously close to her elbow. She peeled back the lid with practiced efficiency. "You look pensive. Debating the existential dread of laundry day? Or finally admitting that poster," she nodded towards the corkboard, "is mocking you?"
Ben winced. "Maybe both. Mostly feeling like my personal trainer is a sadistic ghost haunting my protein shaker."
"Ah, the elusive gains." Ella scraped the bottom of the yoghurt pot. "Still committing to the… what did you call it? 'Physical recomposition journey'?"
"Trying," Ben sighed, rolling his shoulders. They felt disappointingly narrow. He caught a whiff of something sharp and chemical clinging to her lab coat – acetone, maybe, or ethanol. A familiar scent, part of Ella's aura. "Feels like running on a treadmill made of molasses. While wearing lead boots. Covered in… more molasses." He gestured vaguely. "You know."
Ella watched him, her head tilted, scientist observing a particularly baffling specimen. Her gaze was sharp, intelligent, missing nothing. It was both exhilarating and terrifying, that look. He felt simultaneously seen and utterly transparent. He tugged self-consciously at his shirt collar.
"Right," she said slowly, tapping the empty yoghurt pot against her knee. "The… motivation. The confidence aspect." She hopped down, landing lightly. "Okay. Hold that thought." She vanished back into her room, the lab coat swirling dramatically behind her.
Ben stared at the closed door. Confidence aspect? He could hear muffled clinking, the scrape of a drawer. His heart did an uncomfortable little skip. Ella's room was a controlled explosion – microscopes nestled beside fantasy novels, petri dishes sharing shelf space with vintage action figures. What could she possibly…?
She reappeared moments later, holding something small and innocuous between her thumb and forefinger. A single, unassuming white pill in a tiny, clear ziplock bag. She held it out like an offering, or a challenge.
"What… is that?" Ben asked, eyeing the pill suspiciously. It looked profoundly ordinary.
"My current project," Ella announced, her eyes gleaming with that particular intensity reserved for breakthroughs and questionable life choices. "Well, one of them. Phase Three trial results just came back. Stable. Predictable. Minimal side effects in the test cohort." She lowered her voice conspiratorially, leaning in. Ben caught another wave of lab chemicals mixed with her usual scent of coconut shampoo. "It’s a synthetic testosterone booster. Short-term effect, obviously. Think of it as… a physiological confidence boost. A jumpstart."
Ben blinked. "A… testosterone booster? Like, gym bro stuff? Illegal steroid things?" His voice squeaked slightly. "Ella, are you selling me drugs?"
"Selling? Ben, please." She looked genuinely offended. "This is cutting-edge endocrinology. Refined. Precise. Synthesized by me. And no, not like gym bro stuff. Those are blunt instruments. This," she wiggled the baggie, "is a scalpel. Targets specific receptor pathways. Temporary spike. Think… a week, maybe ten days, of optimized hormonal milieu. Enhances protein synthesis, energy utilization…" She trailed off, seeing his expression. "Look, you’re working hard, right? Hitting the weights, tracking macros, the whole…" she gestured vaguely at his corkboard, "…sad board of broken promises. But biology is slow. Annoyingly slow. This could bridge the gap. Give you that kick you want."
Ben stared at the pill. It looked harmless. Tiny. Insignificant. Yet the implications felt enormous. A shortcut. Ella’s phrase echoed: physiological confidence boost. He imagined walking into the gym, not feeling like a twig among oaks. He imagined actually feeling the muscles he was supposedly building. He imagined… talking to people. To her. Without his tongue trying to tie itself into nautical knots. A week of not feeling like the universe’s designated awkward turtle. The temptation was a physical pull, warm and dangerous.
"Is it… safe?" The question felt weak, inadequate.
"Safeer than over-the-counter crap," Ella stated firmly. "My synthesis is clean. Dosage is meticulously calibrated based on average male physiology – you fit the profile. Side effects observed were transient: mild acne flare in one subject, slightly increased irritability in another. Nothing systemic. Nothing lasting." She paused, her gaze softening slightly, seeing the war on his face. "Ben, I wouldn't give you anything I hadn’t tested rigorously. You know that. But… it’s your body. Your call. Zero pressure." She placed the little baggie carefully on the cluttered table next to his laptop. "Think about it."
She turned to head back to her room, the conversation apparently closed. Ben watched the pill. It seemed to pulse with potential. A week. Ten days. A glimpse of the person he desperately wanted to be, or at least feel like. Was this cheating? Probably. Was it pathetic? Absolutely. Was the slow grind of his current reality slowly crushing his spirit? Undeniably.
"Ella?"
She stopped, hand on her doorknob, looking back.
"Okay," Ben said, the word tasting strange and decisive on his tongue. "Okay. What the hell. Let's… do the science."
A brilliant, almost predatory grin spread across Ella's face. "Excellent." She bounced back, snatching the baggie and expertly popping the pill into his palm before he could second-guess. "Down the hatch. Water?" She was already grabbing a glass, filling it from the tap.
Ben stared at the tiny white disc in his hand. It felt heavier than it should. His mouth was suddenly dry. A physiological confidence boost. He thought about the gym. About Ella’s oblivious smile. About finally feeling… enough. He tossed the pill into his mouth. It tasted faintly chalky, bitter. He chased it with a gulp of lukewarm tap water, swallowing hard.
Ella watched him, eyes narrowed in clinical assessment rather than affection. "Initial ingestion noted. Time: 10:47 AM." She patted his shoulder, a brisk, friendly gesture. "Report any unusual sensations. Increased libido is a probable effect. Try not to be weird about it." She winked, a flash of playful teasing that still managed to make his stomach flip. "Gotta run. Lab calls. Big data crunch today. See you tonight, science experiment!" With another whirl of her white coat, she was gone, the door clicking shut firmly behind her.
Ben stood alone in the quiet, suddenly cluttered kitchen. The faint chemical scent of her presence lingered. He raised a hand, flexed his fingers. Nothing felt different. Yet. The silence pressed in, thick and expectant. The bitter aftertaste of the pill coated his tongue. The motivational quotes on the corkboard seemed to watch him, judgmental and silent. What the hell have I just done? The question echoed in the stillness, unanswered, the first tremor in what felt like the beginning of something he couldn't possibly control.
