Chapter 1: Beginning
The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the apartment, wafting through the air and luring me out of our cozy bedroom. I yawned, stretching my arms high above my head, and made my way to the kitchen. I could hear Sophie humming as she moved around, her voice soft and warm.
As I entered the kitchen, she was standing by the counter, her back to me. She had on one of my old band t-shirts that fell to her mid-thigh, and her dark hair was pulled up into a messy bun. She was wearing those fuzzy slippers she loved, the ones with the little cat faces on them.
I smiled, walking over to her and wrapping my arms around her waist. She leaned back into me, tilting her head up for a kiss.
"Morning, gorgeous," I murmured, my lips brushing hers.
"Morning, tall drink of water," she replied with a smirk, pointing at the coffee pot. "There's a fresh brew if you want some."
I released her and poured myself a cup, taking a sip before leaning against the counter. "What's on the agenda for today?"
Sophie shrugged, turning back to the counter where she was slicing some fruit.
"Nothing too exciting. I thought we could finally get around to painting the living room. You know, make it feel more like ours."
I nodded, taking another sip of my coffee. "Sounds good. I could use a change of scenery from the dull white walls."
She laughed, handing me a slice of orange. "Exactly. Plus, it'll give us something to do together. We've been so busy lately, it's like we never see each other anymore."
I took the orange slice, popping it into my mouth. "True.
Work's been a real pain lately," I agreed, swallowing the juicy orange slice. I noticed something pink and unusual in the fruit bowl. "Hey, what's that? We didn't have that before, did we?"
Sophie glanced over and her eyes widened. "Oh, that's weird. I've never seen it before either. It must have come with the grocery delivery. Let me have it," she said, reaching for the pink apple.
"Wait, are you sure? I mean, it could be poisonous or something," I joked, but there was a hint of concern in my voice.
Sophie rolled her eyes, taking the apple from the bowl.
"Please, it's just an apple. What could go wrong?" she said, a playful smile on her face. "Besides, if it's poisonous, you can be my hero and save me with your Heimlich maneuver skills," she added, winking at me.
I chuckled, "Alright, but if you turn into some kind of apple-zombie, don't come crying to me."
Sophie laughed, taking a bite of the apple. Her eyes widened as she chewed, and I could see a strange expression cross her face.
"Mmph," she said, swallowing. "That was... interesting. Taste like nothing I've had before."
I raised an eyebrow, taking another sip of my coffee. "Interesting how? Like, interesting good, or interesting bad?"
She shrugged, putting the apple down. "A bit of both, I think. It's hard to explain. But hey, now we know why it was free. Probably some strange new hybrid or something."
I laughed, rinsing our coffee cups and setting them in the sink.
"Well, as long as it doesn't give you superpowers or anything, I guess it's all good."
Sophie grinned, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Superpowers? Like what, the ability to make the perfect omelette every time?"
"Hey, don't underestimate the power of a well-made omelette," I said, playfully nudging her shoulder. "Besides, if you did have superpowers, I think I'd prefer something a little more... exciting."
She raised an eyebrow, a mischievous glint in her eye.
"Oh yeah? Like what?"
I leaned in closer, my voice low and playful. "Well, how about the ability to read my mind? Imagine the possibilities."
Sophie laughed, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Oh, I can definitely imagine. And trust me, you wouldn't like what you'd hear."
I chuckled, stepping back and giving her a playful shove. "Hey, I can take it. Besides, it's not like I'm asking for much.
